Letter from Ernest Hemingway’s widow could solve Cuban farmhouse mystery

The mystery of whether Ernest Hemingway’s widow volunteered or was coerced into leaving their Cuban house to the nation has come a step closer to being solved, with the discovery of a letter in which she states that her late husband “would be pleased” that Finca Vigía be “given to the people of Cuba … as a centre for opportunities for wider education and research”.
Hemingway lived on the 19th-century Cuban farm for 21 years, between 1939 and 1961, writing his masterpieces The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls there as well as posthumously published works including A Moveable Feast and Islands in the Stream. He committed suicide in Idaho in 1961. The property became a museum in 1962, but it has been unclear whether this was following the wishes of Mary Hemingway, his fourth wife, or at the insistence of the Cuban government, with differing accounts from different parties.
The newly discovered letter, dated 25 August 1961, sees Mary Hemingway specifically donate the Finca Vigía to the Cuban people. “…Whereas – my husband, Ernest Hemingway, was for twenty-five years a friend of the Pueblo of Cuba … he never took part in the politics of Cuba … he never sold any possessions of his, except his words, having given away cars, guns, books and his Nobel prize medal to the Virgen del Cobre,” she wrote to her husband’s friend Roberto Herrera.
“I believe that he would be pleased that his property … in Cuba be given to the people of Cuba … as a center for opportunities for wider education and research, to be maintained in his memory. With this document, as the only heir of Ernest’s estate, I hereby give to the people of Cuba this property, in the hope that they will learn and profit from, and enjoy it, as much as Ernest and I did.”

Sold this week via Alexander Historical Auctions, the letter was found among the papers of Herrera. “Ernest Hemingway had committed suicide in Ketchum less than two months earlier. However, at some point shortly thereafter, Mary backtracked and stated that after Hemingway’s suicide, the Cuban government contacted her in Idaho and announced that it intended to expropriate the house, along with all real property in Cuba. These documents show that Mary did indeed intend to donate the home to the Cuban people,” said the auction house in its catalogue. The handwritten note was snapped up on Wednesday for $1,100 (£716), a price well below the estimate of $2,000-$3,000.
Valerie Hemingway – who was Ernest’s secretary before marrying his youngest son, whom she met at the author’s funeral – went to Finca Vigía with Mary shortly after Hemingway’s death to sort through his papers. She said via email that “what is being auctioned is a draft of a memo Mary intended to give to [Fidel] Castro that Roberto Herrera was going to translate. As far as I can remember Mary never actually sent the memo; she gave the draft to Roberto afterwards.”
Her own memoir, Running with the Bulls: My Years with the Hemingways, sees Valerie write that Mary “genuinely wanted to see her husband’s memory endure by creating a shrine of the home he loved and dedicating it to the Cuban people, among whom he had lived for more than a third of his life … Mary’s first idea was that the finca would become a learning centre, and to that end she wanted to leave there as complete a record of her husband’s life and most especially of his work as was prudent.”
But Naomi Wood, author of the novel Mrs Hemingway, said that Mary Hemingway’s own memoir suggests the situation was not quite as straightforward. “The question is whether the Hemingway house was ‘donated’ by Mary, or coerced from her, or extracted from her via diplomacy. In all likelihood it was a mixture of all three,” she said.

“In her memoir, How It Was, she uses the words ‘acquisition’ and ‘appropriation’, which suggests the takeover of Hemingway’s property was done with some unwillingness on her part, rather than a donation as the auctioned letter suggests. Though the auctioned letter suggests a donation, her memoir suggests bullying, though Castro does it in the most gentlemanly fashion, even asking her: ‘Why don’t you stay here with us in Cuba?’”
Mary Hemingway recounts a telephone conversation from the time in How it Was, in which she says to a Cuban official that “I’m not sure if I wish to give you our finca. [They could appropriate it, of course, as they had done to so much US property there.] Perhaps your government would give me permission to go down to remove our personal papers. Would you find out and call me back tomorrow? This same hour? Muy bien.”
She was advised, she writes, “to take the chance of recovering Ernest’s manuscripts, if nothing more. By this time United States citizens were prohibited journeys to Cuba, but the US immigration authorities in Miami gave me the exit and re-entry permits.”
The author’s widow would bring back crates of papers on a shrimp boat travelling from Havana to Tampa. “Mary also recounts her negotiations with Castro to remove a few paintings back to the US: including a Paul Klee and Juan Gris,” said Wood. “She also manages to remove Hemingway’s wax-sealed manuscripts they’d found at the Banco Nacional. Mary’s cargo left on a shrimp boat back to Tampa, which was the last to have any clearance papers from the US. More importantly for scholars than the nature of the deal for the Finca Vigía donation or appropriation was the fact that she managed to get those manuscripts out.”
Dr Susan Beegel, editor emerita of The Hemingway Review, said the discovery of the letter – first covered in Fine Books & Collections – was “new and interesting”.
“It’s nice to see her thoughts on how she intended the people of Cuba to enjoy the museum – still thriving today,” said Beegal. “It’s well-known that Mary deeded the Finca Vigía to the people of Cuba. After the Castro revolution, the house could have been appropriated, as was the case with other US property in Cuba, but instead the Cuban government approached Mary to request the house as a gift, to be used as a monument to Hemingway. She negotiated with them (and the Kennedy administration as well, because US citizens were not allowed to visit Cuba) to be able to return and remove personal belongings, art, and Hemingway’s manuscripts from the house in exchange for the donation.”

Stuck in time: Havana’s once-stunning architecture deteriorating

Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/living/home-garden/article3599351.html#storylink=cpy
Standing before an evidently enthralled audience in a Coral Gables bookstore, Michael Connors was delivering an illustrated presentation about Havana’s pre-Revolution architecture and interior design when he noticed a woman a few rows back lower her head and cry.
“She was wiping her eyes as I was talking,” Connors said afterward, as he signed copies of his fourth book on Cuba, Havana Modern: 20th-Century Architecture and Interiors, whose publication last month prompted his presentation at Books & Books.
The woman’s tears said all they needed to about the yearning Cuban exiles feel for the island of their birth, which many have not set foot upon since leaving in the wake of Fidel Castro’s assumption of power in 1959.
Beamed onto a screen behind Connors as he spoke were photographs — most of them stunning — of public buildings and houses in Havana from various architectural periods, most notably Art Nouveau, Beaux Arts and Art Deco, as well as every other Western architectural style “that exists from the past 500 years,” including the French and Spanish Renaissance, the book says. The Cuban capital houses a confluence of distinct styles that Connors said “exists in no other city in this hemisphere.”
“There was plenty of money down there — everybody wanted to build,” Connors said, referring to the first few decades of the 20th century, when Havana’s modernist look evolved during a construction boom fueled in large part by immigrant Spaniards.
“Some of the best architects in the world went to Cuba,” said Connors, who points out in his book that among the half-million immigrants who arrived in Cuba during the first quarter of the century were architects, artisans, builders and sculptors “who had cultivated their trades, talents and tastes under the mantle of the European moderne movement.”
But, as has long been clear to anyone with an interest in Cuba, the vagaries of time, hurricanes and politics have done much to impede the maintenance and care of many of Havana’s most outstanding buildings.
“It’s preservation by neglect,” Connors, a historian and Caribbean design expert, told the audience. He was alluding to the fact that many exceptional buildings have survived for decades only because there was no money to either modernize them or tear them down. In some cases, mansions turned to slums, disintegrating while filled with families.
Other remarkable structures have been restored to their former glory, an effort spearheaded by Eusebio Leal, Havana’s official historian, who found a way to use revenue from tourists to finance the restoration of hundreds of buildings in the colonial section of the city, which dates to 1519.
One of the first edifices Leal focused on was the Palace of the Captains General, an 11-year project that resulted in the building becoming the City Museum. It is one of many buildings that drew Connors’ attention, but his favorite is the former headquarters of the Bacardí rum empire, an Art Deco marvel completed in 1930, to which he devotes a dozen pages.
Connors is fond too of the Teatro América, another Art Deco structure that is pure elegance. Shown to great effect in a two-page photo is a ladies’ cloakroom with upturned brass lamps and worn, green leather armchairs that the author surmised have not been renovated in decades. “It’s like walking back into a time capsule,” he said.
Of the private homes shown in the book, the one built for Pablo González de Mendoza in 1916 in the Pompeian style was the first in Havana to have an indoor swimming pool. His grandson, Gonzalo Valdes-Fauli, a retired investment banker, attended Connors’ presentation and told him afterward that he recalled as a child carving his name with an icepick on a wall in the kitchen. Thirty-five years later, in the 1990s, he went back to the house — which now serves as the British embassy — and found the carving undisturbed.
Connors’ book makes note also of Havana’s hotels, some of which were playgrounds for glamorous visitors such as Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra before the Revolution.
The Habana Riviera, a 21-story hotel and casino built by the American crime figure Meyer Lansky in 1957, was nationalized by the Cuban government three years later and looks just as it did then. It has not been well maintained, Connors said, with a general air of neglect and mold plainly visible in one of the rooms he visited.
In the hotel’s heyday, the actress and competitive swimmer Esther Williams performed in the Riviera’s saltwater pool, which was surrounded by 75 changing cabañas, each with a private telephone.
Although the hotel’s restaurant, L’Aiglon, retains a vivid mural of Cubans dressed elegantly for a carnival, “the food is terrible,” Connors said. “The plates are the same ones they were using in 1957, and I have a feeling they’re using the same napkins, too.”
The author acknowledged that he had not expected to enjoy Cuba when he first went there 15 years ago as part of his research into another book, Caribbean Elegance.
“But my whole perception changed, with the music, the rum, the cigars,” said Connors, who estimated that he has visited Cuba more than 50 times. He usually stays in a rented apartment in Havana. “I consider it my second home,” said Connors, who has owned a house on St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, for 40 years.
“We thank you so much for bringing Cuba to us,” Sebastian V. Paris, a 53-year-old paralegal in Miami who left Cuba with his parents in 1970, said to the author during a question-and-answer session. Later, Paris said Connors’ book made it possible for Cubans like himself to “enjoy things that we never would have seen” otherwise.
“We couldn’t get inside to see those beautiful houses, or especially their furnishings,” said Paris, who recalled walking past some of Havana’s imposing private homes as a child and wondering what they were like behind their walls.
The Paris family’s own house in Marianao, a Havana suburb, was nothing to sniff at. “It was a three-story mansion,” said Paris, whose father sold agricultural machinery and whose mother was involved in two businesses, jewelry and textiles. When the family left for Miami, they were permitted to take nothing from their house but a single piece of luggage each, and even the suitcases were searched for cash and jewelry. Shortly thereafter, the house became a school and remains so, Paris said.
He returned in 1979 and again in 2000, when he noticed in one of Havana’s less prominent neighborhoods some balconies that were “falling down piece by piece.” He raised his camera and took some photographs, and was almost immediately set upon by a police officer, who forced him to delete the images.
“They did not want me to take pictures of the devastated, falling-down Cuba,” Paris said. “They want the tourists to see the other Cuba.”
It is clear that Cuban authorities recognize the value of Havana’s old-world charm and of restoring its crumbling structures, said Roberto Suro, director of the University of Southern California’s Tomás Rivera Policy Institute, the oldest think tank on Latino issues in the United States.
“In Havana, there are whole blocks, whole neighborhoods, a whole city of buildings constructed before 1960, and it is the cumulative effect that creates an urban landscape like no other,” said Suro, who has visited Cuba many times. “It is not that they are so extraordinary on their own. They are extraordinary together.”
For centuries, he said, the old center of Havana — La Habana Vieja — has been a distinct place with its own look and feel. “The restoration has not just rescued the churches, forts and palaces, but it is in the process of preserving everything that was inside the old city,” Suro said. “The glory of it is the feeling of being in a world apart. The worry is that it turns into an artificial place for tourists and the lucky Cubans with money to spend, but no real life of its own.”
A person in the audience at Books & Books spoke up to say that the parts of Havana that have been restored “have turned it into a kind of Disneyland,” implying that it was done for the sole benefit of tourists.
But the consensus at the book store seemed to be that it was infinitely preferable to see some action at last, and to stave off the decay that seemed so endemic only a few years ago.
For Connors and the Havana-based photographer Néstor Martí, who took most of the pictures in the book and who accompanied him to Miami and elsewhere for a U.S. book tour, recording the beauty and uniqueness of Havana’s houses and public buildings was not just a scholarly study — it was an appreciation of the talent and creativity that went into Havana’s buildings.
“The quality of construction was very good until the ’60,” Martí said. “After that, not so much.”
The Havana Modern book also amply illustrates that, whatever the Revolution’s pretensions, virtually nothing of significance was built in Havana after 1959. All the beauty in its buildings came before.
“No one has been able to bring to life the architecture and design of Cuba and the Caribbean the way Michael has been able to in this book and in his previous books,” said Mitchell Kaplan, who runs the Books & Books stores and is something of a literary institution in Miami.
In the audience, Dora Vidal watched the slides with wonder. “I left in ’61 and I haven’t been back,” said Vidal, who is 70 years old and whose parents’ home in Havana’s Miramar district was designed by Max Borges, who was also responsible for the famous Tropicana nightclub.
“We left when Cuba was a gem,” Vidal said. “But we Cubans live with our memories, with the romance of Cuba. I always thought of retiring there. That was my dream. But I’ll keep living with my memories — until things change.”

Cuban Ysrael Seinuk, 78 - Made Tall, Sleek Buildings Possible - Obituary (Obit) - NYTimes

Ysrael Seinuk, a structural engineer who made it possible for many of New York City’s tallest new buildings to withstand wind, gravity and even earthquakes, died on Sept. 14 in Manhattan. He was 78 and lived in Forest Hills, Queens.
Ysrael Seinuk worked on support systems for a number of New York's towers.
The cause was cancer, said his daughter, Beatrice Seinuk-Ackerman.
New Yorkers may not know his name, but they certainly recognize Mr. Seinuk’s work and its mark on the skyline. Among the many projects that he made structurally possible, usually working with his partner, Irwin G. Cantor, were the 70-story Trump World Tower near the United Nations, the 48-story Condé Nast Building in Times Square and the 45-story Bear Stearns headquarters on Madison Avenue, at 46th Street.
It is structural engineers who allow the architect to sleep peacefully at night. They must analyze the forces, like seismic events, that can affect buildings, with their calculations becoming more complex as buildings are designed to be taller and sleeker. They must determine the strength and flexibility of the construction materials, including the floor slabs, the beams and the columns.
Mr. Seinuk’s “real genius was the design of high-rise buildings using reinforced concrete as the structural material,” Elizabeth O’Donnell, associate dean of architecture at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, said Tuesday. (Reinforced concrete incorporates metal bars — rebars — grids, plates or fibers to strengthen the structure.)
“I think of him as the person who brought reinforced concrete to New York City,” Dean O’Donnell said, “because this was primarily a city where its high-rises were structured in steel.”
The Cantor Seinuk firm designed the support systems for three of New York’s tallest reinforced-concrete buildings: the 57-story Galleria on 57th Street near Park Avenue, the 51-story New York Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue at 50th Street (formerly the Helmsley Palace Hotel) and the 58-story Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.
Similarly designed projects in other countries include the O-14 office tower in Dubai, done for his firm Ysrael A. Seinuk P.C., and the Chapultepec Tower, an office building in the most severe seismic zone of Mexico City.
Among the more unusual New York City structures that Mr. Seinuk helped plan are 450 Lexington Avenue, which rises through an old post office from a base in the subsurface rail yards of Grand Central Terminal; a residential building topped by a pyramid overlooking the United Nations; and the Lipstick Building, an elliptically shaped office tower on Third Avenue at 53rd Street.
For the O-14 building in Dubai, a 22-story commercial building, Mr. Seinuk worked with the architects in the design of an undulating outer shell composed of reinforced concrete, creating an open, column-free interior. The shell is laced with large perforations, allowing it to serve as a solar screen to the extreme desert heat.
Ysrael Abraham Seinuk was born in Havana on Dec. 21, 1931, the only child of Jaime and Sara Seinuk. His father had emigrated from Lithuania. Besides his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Fanny; his son, Isaac; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Mr. Seinuk graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in civil engineering in 1954. Within six years he had designed a 700-room hotel in Havana. But when Fidel Castro came to power, he fled to the United States.
He was soon hired by what was then called Abrams, Hertzberg & Cantor. Ten years later he was promoted to partner and in 1992 was named chief executive of what became the Cantor Seinuk Group.
Mr. Seinuk started what his daughter called a parallel firm, Ysrael A. Seinuk P.C., in 1977, and eventually sold Cantor Seinuk to a British conglomerate.
For 40 years, Mr. Seinuk taught structural engineering to architecture students at Cooper Union.
“He had a huge impact on the students,” Dean O’Donnell said. “He created the structure curriculum so that young architects could bring poetry and power into their designs.”

Ex-Fed chief Bernanke denied loan to refinance his home

www.bullfax.com
ben bernanke, yearbook
Former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke revealed last week that he was turned down when he tried to refinance his home loan.
According to Bloomberg News, Bernanke, in speaking at a conference in Chicago Thursday, told the crowd, “I recently tried to refinance my mortgage and I was unsuccessful in doing so.”
“I recently tried to refinance my mortgage and I was unsuccessful . . ."- Ben Bernanke
The audience reportedly laughed, and Bernanke responded: “I’m not making that up.”
“I think it’s entirely possible” that lenders “may have gone a little bit too far on mortgage credit conditions,” he said.
Bernanke also told the conference of the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing and Care that the first-time homebuyer market is “not what it should be.”
Bernanke was paid $199,750 annually as head of the central bank and reportedly earned $250,000 in March for his first public speaking engagement since stepping down in January.
He also reportedly received $1 million in a deal to write his memoirs.

(el-alto-sueño);

le pidieron las piernas

duras y nudosas

¿No me envidias?”.

Has sufrido mucho, hombre, entra, te has ganado el cielo.
