Since putting email back in its corral, I’ve turned some recovered time to reading actual books in print — the latest being Retirement Heist: How Companies Plunder and Profit from the Nest Eggs of American Workers by Ellen E. Schultz. If a nation of sheep shall beget a government of wolves, then the lesson from Retirement Heist is that today the shears are sharpened with numbers.

Retirement Heist is, as one blurb describes, a “meticulously researched and gripping as a crime thriller.” Each chapter explains, with detailed research data and outrage-generating examples, yet another method corporations use to steal retirement benefits and mask the theft behind accounting shenanigans. Arpaio on Obama's birth certificate

Hawaii official now swears: No Obama birth certificate

Former Hawaii elections clerk Tim Adams has now signed an affidavit swearing he was told by his supervisors in Hawaii that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Barack Obama Jr. in Hawaii and that neither Queens Medical Center nor Kapi’olani Medical Center in Honolulu had any record of Obama having been born in their medical facilities.

Adams was employed at the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division from May 2008 through September 2008.

His position was senior elections clerk, overseeing a group of 50 to 60 employees responsible for verifying the identity of voters at the Absentee Ballot Office. It was in this capacity that Adams became aware of the search for Obama’s birth-certificate records.

“During the course of my employment,” Adams swears in the affidavit (viewable in full as part 1 and part 2), “I became aware that many requests were being made to the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division, the Hawaii Office of Elections, and the Hawaii Department of Health from around the country to obtain a copy of then-Senator Barack Obama’s long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate.”

As he inquired about the birth certificate, he says, his supervisors told him that the records were not on file at the Hawaii Department of Health.

“Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division told me on multiple occasions that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama in the Hawaii Department of Health,” Adams’ affidavit reads, “and there was no record that any such document had ever been on file in the Hawaii Department of Health or any other branch or department of the Hawaii government.”

In a recorded telephone interview, Adams told WND that it was common knowledge among election officials where he worked that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate could be found at the Hawaii Department of Health.

“My supervisor came and told me, ‘Of course, there’s no birth certificate. What? You stupid,’” Adams said. “She usually spoke well, but in saying this she reverted to a Hawaiian dialect. I really didn’t know how to respond to that. She said it and just walked off. She was quite a powerful lady.”

Moreover, Adams was told that neither Queens Memorial Hospital nor Kapi’olani Medical Center had any records of Obama’s birth at their medical facilities: “Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division further told me on multiple occasions that Hawaii State government officials had made inquires about Sen. Obama’s birth records to officials at Queens Medical Center and Kapi’olani Medical Center in Honolulu and that neither hospital had any record of Senator Obama having been born there, even though Governor Abercrombie is now asserting and various Hawaii government officials continue to assert Barack Obama Jr. was born at Kapi’olani Medical Center on Aug. 4, 1961.”

“We called the two hospitals in Honolulu: Queens and Kapi’olani,” Adams stressed. “Neither of them have any records that Barack Obama was born there.”

In 2009, WND documented that Obama and his supporters had first claimed he was born at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, before the story changed to Kapi’olani Medical Center in Honolulu.

After WND’s report on the two conflicting hospitals, online news sites including the United Press International and Snopes.com scrubbed their websites to eliminate any reference to Queens Medical Center, substituting instead that Obama was born at Kapi’olani Medical Center without explaining the discrepancy or the correction.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie

In 2010, then-candidate for governor Neil Abercrombie was involved in an Obama birth controversy when he read a letter at a Kapi’olani Medical Center centennial dinner in Honolulu that supposedly was authored by President Obama, claiming Kapi’olani as his birth hospital.

As WND reported, the letter read by Abercrombie and initially displayed on the Kapi’olani website turned out to be a computer-created likeness of a letter using HTML code, the building blocks of Internet websites, not an actual paper letter.

The White House has still not confirmed it wrote or sent the letter.

Moreover, Adams claims, the Hawaii government was engaged in a cover-up designed to tell the American public through the Obama-supporting mainstream media that Obama was born in Hawaii, even though no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Obama could be found on record in the Hawaii Department of Health.

In the affidavit Adams swears, “During the course of my employment, I came to understand that for political reasons, various officials in the government of Hawaii, including then-Governor Linda Lingle and various officials of the Hawaii Department of Health, including Dr. Chiyome Fukino, the director of the Hawaii Department of Health, were making representations that Senator Obama was born in Hawaii, even though no government official in Hawaii could find a long-form birth certificate for Senator Obama that had been issued by a Hawaii hospital at the time of his birth.”

Adams further swears his supervisors told him to quit asking about Obama’s birth records.

“During the course of my employment,” Adams states in the affidavit, “I was told by senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division to stop inquiring about Senator Obama’s Hawaii birth records, even though it was common knowledge among my fellow employees that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama.”

“I can go get my long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate,” Adams told WND. “And so I don’t understand, this whole controversy should have been settled three or four years ago in about five minutes.”

Nor does Adams feel the short-form Certification of Live Birth is authoritative documentation proving that Obama was born in Hawaii.

“My basic assumption is that he wasn’t born there,” Adams said. “Certifications of Live Birth were given to people who were born at home, or to people who were born overseas and whose parents brought them back to the islands. If his parents were U.S. citizens, or if one parent was a U.S. citizen, as was the case with Obama, the family would apply for a Hawaiian birth certificate when the parents came back from overseas. That’s normally how you would have gotten on [a Certification of Live Birth] in the 1960s.”

WND has reported that in 1961, Obama’s grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, could have made an in-person request at the Hawaii Department of Health for a registration of a Hawaii birth, even if the infant Barack Obama Jr. had been foreign-born.

In the past few days, Abercrombie has represented that there is a registration of Obama’s birth in the state archives.

But the state registration of birth in 1961 theoretically could prove only that the grandparents had registered Obama’s birth, even if Obama was not born in Hawaii.

Similarly, the newspaper announcements of baby Obama’s birth do not prove he was born in Hawaii, since the newspaper announcements could have been triggered by the grandparents appearing in-person to register baby Obama as a Hawaiian birth, even if the baby was born elsewhere.

WND has documented that the address reported in the birth announcements published in the Hawaii newspapers at the time, 6085 Kalanianaole Highway, was the address where the grandparents lived.

WND has also reported that Barack Obama Sr. maintained his own separate apartment in Honolulu at an 11th Avenue address, even after he was supposedly married to Ann Dunham, Barack Obama’s mother, and that Ann Dunham left Hawaii within three weeks of the baby’s birth to attend the University of Washington in Seattle.

Dunham did not return to Hawaii until after Barack Obama Sr. left Hawaii in June 1962 to attend graduate school at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.

It’s possible the yet-undisclosed birth record in the state archives that Abercrombie has discovered may have come from the grandparents registering baby Obama’s birth, an event that would have triggered both the newspaper birth announcements and availability of a Certification of Live Birth, even if no long-form record exists.

WND has confirmed with Glen Takahashi, elections administrator for the city and county of Honolulu, that Adams was indeed working in their elections offices during the last presidential election.

“We hire temporary workers, because we’re seasonal,” Takahashi told WND.

Adams told WND he supported Hillary Clinton during the 2008 presidential election campaign.

He described himself as a libertarian who wants less government spending, fewer laws that restrict personal freedoms, more adherences to the Constitution and an end to foreign wars.

“I’m interested in individual liberty and upholding the Constitution,” he said. “I want to get American troops out from foreign countries, and I want to see the federal budget balanced.”

He said he might be inclined to support former-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee or former-Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in 2012 to run against President Obama, but he has not yet made up his mind.

“It depends on how fiscally conservative Huckabee and Romney turn out to be on economics,” he said. “But from what I know right now, they would probably be better than Obama.”

The collapse of the Petters empire

It was a typical Tom Petters affair. Flamenco dancers swirled around the room. Actors dressed as matadors posed with Minnesota's rich and famous. Saturday Night Live alum Kevin Nealon told jokes, and NFL great Michael Strahan flew into town for the Aug. 9 party, a Petters fundraiser for his late son's foundation that cost almost $400,000.
A beaming Petters shmoozed and draped his arm around anyone who passed by. Corporate big hitters. Celebrities. Politicians.
A month later, one of Petters' closest associates betrayed him to federal authorities, accusing him of running a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme.
Petters, a high-profile Twin Cities entrepreneur whose holdings include Sun Country Airlines and Polaroid, was led from his Lake Minnetonka mansion to the Sherburne County jail. He faces federal charges of fraud, money laundering and obstruction of justice. Though Petters maintains he is innocent, four associates already have pleaded guilty for their roles in what may rank as one of the biggest investment fraud schemes in history.
Petters' stunning reversal of fortune has everyone who believed in him, from religious charities to international hedge fund managers, scrambling to assess the damage and wondering how they could have been fooled for so long. Joel Alsaker, Petters' boss in the 1970s when he was selling stereo equipment in St. Cloud, has one answer.
"He was so talented -- you can't overstate that fact," Alsaker said. "He could talk your wallet right out of your pocket."
Alsaker said he believed in Petters so much that, in 1989, he lent him $7,900. Petters had promised to repay the money in 19 days, but according to court documents gave multiple excuses for missing the payment, eventually claiming that he had filed for bankruptcy. When Alsaker discovered that the bankruptcy claim was a hoax, he reopened the case.

Court documents show that, before the next hearing, Petters called the court office and claimed the case was settled and should be removed from the court calendar. The ruse didn't work, though, so when Petters failed to show up in court, a judge found him in default.

Alsaker finally collected his money, but only after threatening to repossess Petters' car.

The shopkeeper's son

The Tom Petters who hobnobbed with the elite, drove a Bentley and reportedly dropped $10 million in gambling losses in Las Vegas contrasts sharply with his upbringing in St. Cloud.

Petters grew up with six siblings in a nice but hardly opulent cottage on the banks of the Mississippi River, just below "pill hill" where the doctors lived. The house was secluded behind a stand of trees and featured a domed greenhouse and gardens tended by his father, Fred, who owned a fur, fabric and tailoring shop downtown. The Petters Building had housed the family business for more than 100 years.

The Petterses live in Avon now, but still attend Catholic mass at the Newman Center on the campus of St. Cloud State and are active in peace and justice issues.

The Petterses are "very well respected for their integrity," said Michael D. Doyle, a friend of the family. "They are considerate, modest and gracious, and very much involved in the issues of the community."

In high school, Tom was gregarious, "a bit of a goofball, but nothing legendary," according to classmate Bill Kain.

"Tom was always very smart and very funny and very popular. He had lots of friends," said Jon Petters, Tom's older brother by four years. More >>

What would happen if an investigation into Barack Obama’s eligibility to be president launched by “America’s toughest sheriff” – Joe Arpaio of Arizona’s Maricopa County – actually led to Obama being ousted from office?

If the election ballots carrying Obama’s name were ruled null and void because of Obama’s ineligibility to be on them, some have speculated, Vice President Joe Biden wouldn’t be duly elected either, meaning the Constitution’s order of succession would make Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, president until the next election.

But that’s an awfully big “if.”

As WND reported, an investigative “Cold Case Posse” launched six months ago by Arpaio concluded there is probable cause that the document released by the White House last year as Obama’s birth certificate and alleged proof of eligibility is a computer-generated forgery.

And even though the posse – which comprised former law-enforcement officers and lawyers with law-enforcement experience who interviewed dozens of witnesses and examined hundreds of documents – released its findings at a public news conference, Arpaio claims the press on hand were deaf to the evidence in a biased attempt to dismiss the posse’s conclusions.

In a column published in the Arizona Republic, Arpaio says of the reporters on hand, “Their pre-determined desire to discredit me and my office would not even allow them to consider listening to what was presented in an unbiased manner.”

“During our news conference, my investigators and I laid out a large array of technical information, demonstrations and evidence that no other law-enforcement agency in the country has even considered looking into,” Arpaio writes. “We have produced experts in the creation of electronic documents who will attest that the document in question is a forgery, evidence that the president’s Selective Service registration card is highly suspect and looked far different from any other card we examined from the same exact post office in the same exact month in which his was filed.

“And we uncovered information from the National Archives that is mysteriously missing one week of flight information into Hawaii out of a 10-year span requested by my investigators,” he continues. “It just so happened to be the week of the president’s birth.”

But even after laying out the facts the posse used to come to its conclusion, Arpaio writes, “Not one reporter ever asked about the evidence or the case itself.”

Still, Arpaio says, he hopes the investigation will resurrect earnest discussion over the need for more thoroughly vetting presidential candidates.

“Who in his right mind would disagree that would be a good thing?” he asks.

Still, a team of video producers from Special Guests speculated what would happen in the White House and across the nation if Arpaio’s investigation actually revealed Obama’s candidacy to be “the biggest scandal in the history of the United States of America.”  More >>

By the time authorities busted a fake AIDS clinic in Miami, it had bilked Medicare of more than $4.5 million (2.8 million pounds). Still, the man behind the scheme remained far ahead of the agents pursuing him.

Michel De Jesus Huarte, a 40-year-old Cuban-American, hadn't simply avoided arrest. He had hatched a plan to steal millions more from Medicare by forming at least 29 other shell companies - paper-only firms with no real operations. Each time, he would keep his name out of any corporate records. Other people - some paid by Huarte, some whose identities had been stolen - would be listed in incorporation papers.

The shells functioned as a vital tool to hide the Medicare deceit - and not only for Huarte. Hundreds of others have used the veil of corporate secrecy to help steal hundreds of millions of dollars from one of the nation's largest social service program, a Reuters investigation has found [...]

To disguise Huarte's role, "straw owners" were paid as much as $200,000 to put their names on Florida incorporation records and bank accounts. In return, some straw owners agreed to "flee to Cuba to avoid law enforcement detection or capture," according to the indictment.

Grassley asks HHS to probe whether Castro regime is defrauding Medicare
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) grilled federal officials Wednesday about the Cuban government's possible ties to rampant Medicare fraud in south Florida.

Grassley asked Health and Human Services officials testifying before the Senate Finance Committee whether they were aware of any evidence that Cuba might be involved in fraud schemes against the government program.

He asked HHS Inspector General Daniel Levinson to look into any evidence that Cuban officials have been "facilitating" Medicare fraud and to get back to him after coordinating with the Justice and State departments.

Levinson said he'd "have to get back to you on the particulars."

"We wouldn't comment on any particular case in a public forum," Levinson told The Hill after the hearing.

Last month, the Department of Health and Human Services released a list of the Top 10 healthcare fraud fugitives, who have defrauded the government of $124 million combined. Seven of the 10 fugitives were of Cuban origin, and six of those are now believed to be hiding on the island.
During the hearing, Grassley referenced a report from the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami raising questions about the involvement of Fidel Castro's regime.

The report paraphrases a "high-level former intelligence official with the Cuban Government" as saying that there are "strong indications that the Cuban Government is directing some of these Medicare frauds as part of a desperate attempt to obtain hard currency."

"The source notes that the Cuban Government is also assisting (while not directing) other instances of Medicare fraud — providing perpetrators with information with which to commit fraud," wrote the report's author, research associate Vanessa Lopez. "The former Cuban official goes on to say that, in the instances where the Cuban Government is not directing or facilitating the fraud, it does provide Cuba as a place for fugitives to flee. This gives the Castro regime a convenient and care-free way to raise hard currency."

Furthermore, according to this source, "any fugitive in Cuba needs to pay astronomically large sums of money to the Cuban Government in order to enter and remain in the country."

Some Cuban-American groups have begun to ask for a congressional probe of Cuba's potential ties to Medicare fraud.

Grassley stopped short of that Wednesday, but his comments raised the level of attention a notch.

"I'm just now getting into this, so I don't really know what the next step is," Grassley told The Hill. "But at least there's one step going on now in regard to the written response that I got from [HHS]."

Statistics Prove Lottery Isn't a Game of Chance at All

The lottery's appeal stems from the fact that anyone could be a winner; it is a game of chance. But Canadian statistician Mohan Srivastava, who has degrees from MIT and Stanford, has realized one completely "duh" factor. In order to receive scratch-off lottery tickets, a machine must first print the numbers, over which the latex is pasted. "It would be really nice if the computer could just spit out random digits," Srivastava told Fox News. "But that's not possible, since the lottery corporation needs to control the number of winning tickets. The game can't be truly random." Anything that can't truly be random, he concluded, can be hacked using statistics and laws of probability.

What he discovered was pretty simple: he looked for numbers that never repeated, increasing the likelihood that they'd appear underneath the scratch off. He was right, and his trick netted him winnings nearly 90-percent of the time. Since Srivastava wasn't interested in making money or ripping off the lottery, he duly reported his findings to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which promptly pulled the flawed game.

In order for the lottery to be a true game of chance, gaming commissions all over North America wouldn't be able to control the frequency of the payout. Srivastava's discovery only confirms that there is nothing haphazard about the lottery; the game is designed to lure and entice consumers, preying on the hope that each ticket will be the "lucky" one. Unfortunately, the system is a little better crafted than that, and stats prove it.

Anna Chapman, the Russian spy expelled from the United States who has since become some kind of right wing ideologue back in her home state, has been accused of plagiarism in an article on Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

Chapman wrote an article on Pushkin (the romantic-era Russian poet considered as important as Shakespeare in Russia, yet apparently 'untranslatable') for a column published Monday in paper Komsomolskaya Pravda — here's its Google translated headline: "If Pushkin had to write his mature works, then perhaps there would be no revolution and the murder of the king!".

Unfortunately, it appears that Chapman is in fact no Pushkin scholar.

Worse still, she didn't even plagiarize from a Pushkin scholar, instead choosing to lift entire passages from United Russia spin doctor Oleg Matveichev, a man who thinks that Pushkin was killed in a "European plot" and that United Russia's opposition should be gathered in a city square and run over with tanks.

The Moscow Times reports that Pushkin's death is often invoked for political reasons. "The history of such uses of Pushkin is a trashy novel in its own right," Princeton University professor Caryl Emerson told the paper.

Man nearly scams oil firms out of millions but ... He is Canadian

CALGARY - A man has been charged with trying to bilk oil and natural gas firms out of millions of dollars in bogus environmental fees.
Investigators allege a company calling itself Alberta Environmental Registry sent out false invoices last month that requested payment of environmental compliance fees.
The invoices ranged from $400,000 to $3.3 million and were based on the number of wells owned and operated by each company.
"It looked pretty sophisticated and it is alleged he did have knowledge of the oil and gas industry so that these invoices (were) very believable," said Const. Tanya Bertulli of the Calgary Police Service economic crimes unit.
"A lot of these companies were very smart to pick it up. We believe had the amounts been smaller, that they would have just paid out."
John Edward Wilson of Calgary is charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000. Police say further charges are possible.

Computer scanning expert Doug Vogt and typesetting expert Paul Irey say they will accompany attorney Orly Taitz when she presents to the Hawaii Department of Health a subpoena that should allow her to examine Barack Obama's original 1961 typewritten birth certificate.
Vogt and Irey both told WND they are making travel plans to join Taitz in Honolulu when she goes to the state agency at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, to present the subpoena in person.
"We will plan to hold a press conference late in the day of Aug. 8," Vogt said, "and if the document we see varies from the birth certificate documents the White House released, we plan to file criminal charges in Hawaii immediately."

A growing list of apparent anomalies in the Obama long-form birth certificate released by the White House continues to fuel suspicion that the document is a crude, computer-generated forgery.
The Hawaii Department of Health and the White House have insisted that the document made public April 27 after nearly three years of public demand is genuine.
Web document experts, however, have questioned the document's authenticity, and now a close inspection of the Hawaii Department of Health state registrar's stamp on the birth records reveals an apparent typographical error.
