Two U.S. Reps. Host Reception in Support of Cuban Spies
It's always fascinating to watch pro-Castro activists use democracy to support a dictatorship.
Donning their Che berets and "Viva la Revolucion!" signs, they marched in front of The White House and held various speaking engagements, including one (of course) at the Cuban Interests Section, where they held a teleconference with Rene Gonzalez, one the five spies who completed his prison term and was returned to Cuba (thus, now four remaining).
An item that was curiously on their agenda was a "Reception at Capitol Hill hosted by a U.S. Congressman."
However, no details were included.
Why?
Was this U.S. Congressman too embarrassed to be hosting an event in favor of Cuban spies convicted in U.S. federal court for, among other things, conspiracy to commit murder and infiltrating U.S. military facilities?
Never missing a propaganda opportunity, the Castro regime's state media revealed that the Congressional hosts were U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) and U.S. Rep. Yvette Clark (D-NY) -- below is a picture of them at the event.
Apparently, there was even a video of the entire event also, but it has since been removed.
How come?
Are U.S. Reps. Rush and Clarke too embarrassed to be seen and heard praising the Cuban dictatorship and its spies?
Maybe not -- but they should be

Cuba Reconfirms Alan Gross is a Hostage
"The Cuban government has informed the North American government of its complete willingness to start serious and respectful conversations to try to find a solution to the case of Mr. Alan Gross."
But he added such talks must "take into account the humanitarian concerns of our country in the case of Cuban citizens that are serving sentences in the United States."
Rodriguez makes it clear (once again) that American development worker, Alan Gross, is being held hostage by the Castro regime, in order to coerce the United States into releasing four convicted Cuban spies still serving their sentences here.
Moreover, Rodriguez's remarks also confirm that the hostage-taking of Alan Gross is an act of terrorism by the Cuban government.
Terrorism is defined in U.S. law as “the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.”

Officials dropped their opposition when Gonzalez offered to renounce his U.S. citizenship. Gonzalez arrived in Cuba recently for what was originally to be a temporary visit to attend his father's funeral. Gonzalez is a Cuban citizen, and has a wife and daughters living in Cuba.

Walter and Gwendolyn Myers |
The [Marta Rita] Velazquez case, when studied in conjunction with those of [Ana Belen] Montes and Walter and Gwendolyn Myers, provides a fascinating window into the scope and nature of Cuban intelligence efforts inside the United States. With Velazquez at the U.S. Agency for International Development, Montes at the Defense Intelligence Agency and Myers in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, the Cubans had incredible coverage of the American government's foreign policy and intelligence community. Even after Montes was arrested and Velazquez fled to Sweden, Myers remained at the State Department until his retirement in 2007.
It is also quite interesting that all three of these cases are linked to the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Velazquez and Montes were students in the program in the early 1980s, and Myers taught there until 1977, after receiving a Ph.D. from the school in 1972. He returned to the school following his retirement in 2007 and worked as a professor of European Studies until his arrest in June 2009. The school is a high-profile institution that has a proven track record of placing graduates in the American foreign affairs and intelligence communities -- and of hiring former government personnel to serve as professors. Still, it is not the only program with such a profile, and the Cubans would almost certainly have recruited a promising agent from Georgetown's Walsh School, Harvard's Kennedy School or any other program if provided the opportunity. The fact that there were three high-profile Cuban agents who penetrated the U.S. government and who were all associated with the School of Advanced International Studies would seem to be an incredible coincidence. The FBI is probably still looking for potential agents who Myers could have spotted for recruitment when they studied there from 2007 to 2009.
When considering espionage cases, we often refer to an old Soviet KGB Cold War acronym -- MICE -- to explain the motivations of spies. MICE stands for money, ideology, compromise and ego. Traditionally, money has proved to be the top motivation for Americans arrested for espionage, but as seen in the Velazquez, Montes and Myers cases, the Cubans were very successful in recruiting American agents using ideology. Like the Montes and Myers complaints, there is no indication in the Velazquez complaint that she had ever sought or accepted money from the Cuban intelligence service for her espionage activities. While Velazquez and Montes were both of Puerto Rican descent, Myers' recruitment shows that Cuban intelligence officers did not just confine their recruitment activity to Hispanics.
In addition to the Cuban preference for ideologically motivated agents, this case also shows that the Cuban intelligence service is very patient and is willing to wait years for the agents it recruits to move into sensitive positions within the U.S. government rather than just focus on immediate results. It took several years for Velazquez to get a job with access to Top Secret information. Although it must be recognized that this is often the case with ideologically motivated agents who are commonly recruited while students. It is also clear that Cuban espionage efforts against the United States did not end with the Cold War and continue to this day.
Perhaps the most disturbing revelation from the Velazquez case for American counterintelligence officials, though, is the fact that Velazquez was not caught due to some operational mistake or intelligence coup. The only reason she was discovered is because of Montes' arrest and confession, which uncovered her activities. This means that her espionage tradecraft was solid for the nearly 18 years that she worked as a Cuban agent within the U.S. government. Furthermore, the background investigations conducted for the security clearances she held with the Department of Transportation and the Agency for International Development did not pick up on her anti-American sentiments -- even the "full field" investigation that would have been conducted prior to her being granted a Top Secret clearance.

Ex-Cuban spy offers to renounce US citizenship but stay in Cuba

The Damage Done by Castro's Biggest Spy
The Obama Administration soon will be releasing its list of countries that support international terrorism. Currently on the list are: Iran, Sudan, Syria and Cuba. Cuba has been listed since 1982 but Reps. James P. McGovern, D-Mass., and Kathy Castor, D-Fl., propose to remove Cuba from the list. They argue that because Raúl Castro has taken control of the island from his brother Fidel, Cuba no longer poses a threat to the United States.
An article appearing in Sunday’s [April 21] Washington Post presents a less benign appraisal of Cuba’s intentions. The author, Jim Popkin, focuses on the career of a Pentagon intelligence analyst, Ana Montes, who for 17 years fed highly classified information about the U.S. military to the Cuban government, which the Castro brothers routinely shared with their anti-American allies. The unrepetant spy is serving a 25-year sentence in a U.S. penitentiary.
Nevertheless, some say Havana is still listed as a terrorist state because the United States is “locked in a Cold War time warp.” They ignore that it is Raúl and his ailing brother, Fidel, who refuse to change. Repeatedly, President Obama has tried to extend a U.S. “hand of friendship,” inviting Cuba to open its angry fists. Neither Fidel nor Raúl respond. For example, four years ago when Cuba was mired in economic crisis, Obama lifted restrictions on remittances, a flow of millions into the island from Cuban Americans to their relatives. Obama suggested Havana respond by lifting its confiscatory taxes on this person-to-person assistance. Cuba ignored Obama’s entreaty.
Can we learn from the past? A previous administration tried “to improve relations” with North Korea by removing that country from the list. The gesture emboldened that government’s belligerence and tensions between us are now greater.
To remove any government from the list, the president must receive and then send assurances to Congress from the listed government that it no longer engages in or supports terrorism. If President Obama has received such assurances, they remain his secret.
The Washington Post article reports that “U.S. military and intelligence agencies spent years assessing the fallout from Montes crimes.” Last year they told Congress that Montes was “one of the most damaging spies in U.S. history” passing information that “likely contributed to the death and injury of American and pro-American forces in Latin America.” One tidbit of evidence discovered was a “thank-you” note to her for giving the regime the name of an undercover agent working in Cuba, “We were waiting here for him with open arms.”
Montes’ Defense Intelligence Agency briefing to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the National Security Council asserted that Cuba was no longer a threat or even capable of harming the United States. Whether one wants to believe that or not, Cuba remains a strong, steadfast ally of North Korea, Syria and Iran. It also has links with ETA, the separatist-Basque terrorist organization, and with similar groups worldwide.
President Obama vowed to “bring to justice” anyone responsible for the Boston Marathon terrorist attack. President Bill Clinton pledged in 1996 to bring to justice those responsible for shooting down two, small and unarmed, American planes over the Straits of Florida, killing four men. We know the names of the Cuban MIG pilots, the spy who provided information as to when and where the Miami-based Brothers to the Rescue would be flying over the Straits of Florida searching for rafters. And the name of the man who ordered the shoot-down: Raúl Castro, then head of the Cuban military, now Cuba’s president.
In 40 years, Raúl has never repudiated Fidel’s warning: “If the Cuban state were to carry out terrorist acts and respond with terrorism, we believe we would be efficient terrorists. Let no one think otherwise. If we decide to carry out terrorism, it is a sure thing we would be efficient. That the Cuban revolution has never implemented terrorism does not mean that we renounce it.”
There is good reason to continue listing Cuba as a state supporting terrorism, and good reason for Washington to seek justice for those Americans murdered in the Straits of Florida and for Cubans who have been killed for their quest for freedom.

"Hablame"
(el-alto-sueño);
le pidieron las piernas
duras y nudosas

¿No me envidias?”.
“…Me cuidan, me cuidan un poquito entre todos. No le hacen caso a uno, siempre estoy peleando para que no me manden nada. Cuando cojo el sol por la mañana en shorts y siento el aire de mar, me parece que estoy en una playa… ¡Me van a hacer creer que estoy de vacaciones! ¿Qué diría Carlos Marx de semejantes revolucionarios?”.
