A Montreal hospital says it recently treated a woman for cholera after she spent time in Haiti.
Lucie Dufresne, a spokeswoman for University of Montreal Hospital Centre (CHUM), says the woman checked in on New Year's Day and was allowed to return home two days later.
Dufresne said lab tests determined the woman was suffering from cholera. The woman was given antibiotics, rehydrated and kept in quarantine when she was treated.
Dufresne would not give further details about the woman, citing confidentiality.
Dufresne said hospital authorities notified public health officials and that the Montreal case is the only one to have been reported in the province.
Haiti was hit with a deadly cholera outbreak last fall, which killed thousands of people.
