North Korean leader Kim gets married, tours amusement park, state TV says

KCNA via Reuters

North Korea said its new, young leader Kim Jong Un is married, announcing it for the first time in a brief and routine state TV report Wednesday evening that ended weeks of speculation about a beautiful woman who accompanied him to recent public events.
Kim toured an amusement park with his "wife, comrade Ri Sol Ju" on Tuesday, while a crowd cheered for the leader, the speaker said without giving any more details about Ri, including how long they had been married.
Seven months after inheriting the country from his father, Kim Jong Il, the twenty-something leader has been shown in the media several times with the young woman, including at a concert where Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters appeared and at tours of various North Korean sites.

Ice melt found across 97 percent of Greenland, satellites show

Nicolo E. DiGirolamo, SSAI/NASA GSFC, and Jesse Allen, NASA Earth Observatory
Three satellites found that 97 percent of Greenland -- the land mass second only to Antarctica for its volume of ice -- underwent a thaw never before seen in 33 years of satellite tracking, NASA reported Tuesday.
Satellite experts at first didn't trust their readings, especially since they showed an incredible acceleration. Over four days, Greenland's ice sheet -- which covers 683,000 square miles -- went from 40 percent in thaw to nearly entirely in thaw.
"This was so extraordinary that at first I questioned the result: Was this real or was it due to a data error?" Son Nghiem of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif., said in NASA's statement about the findings.

Oswaldo Paya y el Kaxtrizmo

Espinaxiones/
No he tenido mucho tiempo para visitar los blogs. He escuchado un poco.

First American woman in space, Sally Ride, dies at 61

The first American woman to go into space, Sally Ride, died Monday after a 17-month battle against pancreatic cancer, her company said.
Ride made history in 1983 as a crew member on the space shuttle Challenger, breaking the gender barrier for U.S. spaceflight. Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space in 1963, but it took another 20 years for NASA to follow suit.
Word of Ride's death came in an announcement from Sally Ride Science, the educational venture she founded after leaving NASA.
President Barack Obama said he and his wife, Michelle, were "deeply saddened" by the news.
"As the first American woman to travel into space, Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model," Obama said in a White House statement. "She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars, and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools. Sally’s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve, and I have no doubt that her legacy will endure for years to come."
NASA's leaders issued tributes as well.
"Sally Ride broke barriers with grace and professionalism — and literally changed the face of America's space program," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "The nation has lost one of its finest leaders, teachers and explorers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sally's family and the many she inspired. She will be missed, but her star will always shine brightly." More >>

-----------------------------------------------
Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to inform you that a prominent human rights activist, Oswaldo Payá, died in Cuba yesterday. Mr. Payá was the leading voice in support of basic human rights in Cuba, a founder of the non-violent Varela Project, the leader of the Christian Liberation Movement, the goal of which is:
"in a public and sustained manner the release of those jailed in Cuba for defending, promoting and exercising peacefully their human rights; the dialogue between Cubans as a path toward achieving the changes the Cuban people desire and national reconciliation; and our demands for changes in the laws so that the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of all Cubans are respected".

Mr. Payá was recognized by many human rights organizations and was the recipient of, among other awards, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament. His voice, which called for non-violent reform of Cuba’s totalitarian regime and for reconciliation within Cuba, was among the strongest, most principled and most respected voices in Cuban human rights. He was a man who worked hard to bring about constructive dialogue and positive change on his beloved island.

Sadly, he is now dead. I ask that the government of Canada express its condolences and solidarity with Mr. Paya’s family and friends, and express its solidarity with those who mourn.

I would add the fact that this is the second high profile death in highly suspicious circumstances. There are more deaths though in the last year and half: Miguel Valdés Tamayo, Orlando Zapata Tamayo, Juan Wilfredo Soto, Laura Pollán, Wilmar Villar Mendoza, and now Oswaldo Payá and Harold Cepero. This time, however, two foreign citizens survived the crash and are expected to recover. It is paramount to ensure their safety in order to gather more details.
As an example, here is what the Senator Marco Rubio, White House and the European Parliament expressed today:

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Cuba - Construidas solo 8 mil viviendas

Q: Is General Motors becoming ‘China Motors’ using taxpayer dollars?
A: No. The restructured GM is still based in Detroit and is still one-third owned by the U.S. government. But it sells nearly as many cars in China as in the U.S. and has continued expanding operations there.

Michelle Obama’s Salary

FactCheck.org

bweb.blogspot.com
Q: Did Michelle Obama make $317,000 a year while working part-time at the University of Chicago Medical Center?
A: This allegation in a chain e-mail is wrong: Obama’s reported income was $103,633 in 2007, the year she reduced her work schedule to part time.
FULL QUESTION
Is there any truth to this story?
WHERE ARE OUR "WATERGATE" REPORTERS NOW?????
NEW YORK POST ARTICLE
January 24, 2009
Way after we elected this man as the 42nd President of the United States
Despite the fact it was buried on page 17, at least some element of the news media isn’t completely covering for the Obamas.
Date: Thursday, February 12, 2009, 9:25 am
At the top right hand corner of Page 17 of the New York Post of January 24th, 2009, was a short column entitled "Replacing Michelle" in the National Review "The Week" column. I found this interesting, so here it is, word for word, as it appeared:
⬐ Click to expand/collapse the full text ⬏
FULL ANSWER
The anonymous author of this chain e-mail expands upon an opinion piece from the conservative National Review and gets the facts wrong in the process.
On Jan. 9, 2009, the University of Chicago Medical Center officially announced that Michelle Obama had resigned from her post as vice president for community and external affairs to join her husband, then-President-elect Barack Obama, in the White House as the new first lady of the United States.
Michelle Obama had been promoted in 2005 to vice president for community and external affairs after three years as the executive director for community affairs. It’s true, as the e-mail (and National Review column) says, that she received a sizable pay raise that year. She went from earning $121,910 in 2004 as an executive director at the hospital to making $316,962 in 2005 as a vice president, according to tax returns filed by the Obamas for those years. But the suggestion made by the email’s author – and not made by the National Review – that she was being paid more than $300,000 for a "20 hour a week job" is not true.
University of Chicago Medical Center spokesman John Easton said Mrs. Obama didn’t reduce her work schedule from full time to part time until 2007 when it became clear that her husband would run for president. "As she reduced her hours, beginning early in 2007, her salary decreased proportionately," Easton told us in an e-mail. "She switched to half time shortly before her husband formally announced his campaign, then to 20% later that year and to 0% in 2008."
In fact, Mrs. Obama’s income in 2006, a year after her promotion, had decreased to $273,618. And for 2007 (the year she actually started working part-time), her income was $103,633, according to the couple’s tax return for that year. She took an "unpaid leave of absence to work on her husband’s presidential campaign" in 2008, but still received $62,709 from the hospital. However, Easton noted that her final reported salary "consists of accumulated but unused vacation time plus the final payout from a supplemental executive retirement plan."
Easton said the nearly $317,000 figure is "misleading" anyway because it includes more than just her salary. He said the figure "also includes a performance bonus, a one-time signing bonus (she had other, competing offers at the time), and a one-time mandatory payout from a terminated retirement plan." This is reflected in the fact that her 2006 earnings were less than in 2005.
The first lady, a graduate of both Princeton University and Harvard Law School, was quite accomplished before she joined the University of Chicago in 1996 and ultimately the medical center in 2002. Her prior work experience included stints as an associate with the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin LLP, assistant commissioner of planning and development in Chicago’s City Hall and executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies.
Additional Speculation
A significant portion of the text in this chain e-mail is a reproduction of part of a column that appeared in the Feb. 9 issue of National Review; the New York Post also ran part of the magazine’s "The Week" piece on Jan. 24. (The portion of the column reprinted in this e-mail ends with the comment about Roland Burris’ wife.) It’s worth noting that the column makes some implications about Michelle Obama’s former job that are more speculation than fact.
For one, the column suggests that Barack Obama’s election to the U.S. Senate in 2004 had a role in his wife’s promotion and pay increase in 2005. We can’t say what the hospital’s motivation was for promoting her. But Michael Riordan, who served as the medical center’s president at the time, told the Chicago Tribune that it had nothing to do with her husband. "She was hired before Barack was Barack,” Riordan told the newspaper. "She is worth her weight in gold, and she is just terrific." The Tribune reported that Riordan "had planned early on for the position [of executive director of community affairs] to evolve into a vice president’s post as a way of showing the organization’s commitment to community outreach." Riordan said: "I knew where I wanted to go with this position. … I wanted to identify someone to grow into it."  And Easton said at the time that her increased salary was in line with those of other vice presidents at the medical center, who were earning between $291,000 and $362,000, according to the newspaper.
Second, the column implies that her "networking" was what caused her then-senator husband to request a "$1 million earmark for the UC Medical Center" back in 2006. But that’s unsubstantiated also. He did request the funds for the "construction of a new hospital pavilion" at the University of Chicago, but both Obama and hospital officials denied that the request was influenced by his wife’s position. And during the campaign, Obama’s aides were quick to point out that the request was one of many projects that the former senator made in 2005 and 2006 that were killed by Congress.  More >>

'Useful' Canadians to Host “People’s Tribunal” on the Cuban 5

Breaking the Silence | Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly | Justice for the Five
Toronto City Hall, September 21st — 23rd, 2012
Several pro-Castro groups and allied trade unions from across Canada have announced “a Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly” from September 21-23 in Toronto.  The self-professed goals of the tribunal are too highlight the case of the Cuban 5 and attempt to build support for their release.
According to their website (http://canadiannetworkoncuba.ca/tribunal/), the Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly aims to:
  • “to act as a forum for education and for launching an appeal to get justice for the Cuban Five;
  • to break the silence of the mainstream media about this case; and
  • to map out the next steps of a broad and united campaign on the Cuban Five in Québec and across the rest of Canada.”
Composed of prominent Canadian and regime-supported witnesses, the Assembly will hear from “expert witnesses” before rendering a ruling.   No witnesses will testify on behalf of Americans killed by the Castro regime.  Instead, testimony is limited to “the suffering caused to the Cuban people and to others as a result of all the terrorist attacks against Cuba and Cuban interests.”  The Tribunal has no legal authority, but hopes its’ inherently-biased message inspires and resonates with like-minded supporters.

'Roberto', principal tienda cubana

by
Ask a self-employed Cuban how she came to possess the goods she is selling, and she might tell you that they came from “Roberto.”
The euphemism indicates that the goods are stolen, and given the scarcity of many products and the unreliability of state retail stores in Cuba, many new entrepreneurs in Cuba are struggling to cobble together their businesses and turning to alternative — and under-the-table — economic strategies. In fact, the channel of goods coming into the country from family, friends, and mules is estimated to have ballooned recently to more than $1 billion per year. This should be no surprise to the state, since Cubans lack access to a wholesale market by design. But these informal imports, currently running under the radar, are about to face a 100 percent tax that will go into effect in September.
In the course of the ongoing economic overhaul by the Cuban state, new challenges are indeed arising every step of the way. The path in this case is easy to trace.
  1. The Cuban government lays off workers from the public sector in order to eliminate its inefficiencies and encourage a private sector to develop.
  2. The country does not have the mechanisms to support a new private sector, however, so those new entrepreneurs are forced to get creative. They start acquiring more goods through informal channels in order to maintain their supply.
  3. In this (true) scenario, the Cuban state misses out on any kind of revenue from those “imports”. So the government slaps a 100 percent tax on this kind of trade, which looks more like an effort to stifle the informal trade altogether than an attempt to get in on the spoils.
The problem is that Cuban small business owners will be left in a lurch if this is not coupled with the natural counterweight policy — that is, creating a clear way for entrepreneurs to get the goods they need through official channels — which would allow the Cuban state to earn some revenue from the private sector trade while still generating viable conditions for small businesses in the private sector to operate.
I suspect that sounds too much like capitalism.
But with 387,000 Cubans now self-employed (out of a total island population of 11 million) and a state goal to add another 240,000 private-sector jobs this year, policies that make the lives of private sector entrepreneurs and employees more difficult seem counterintuitive.
The Cuban National Assembly is set to meet on Monday. Here’s hoping we see a good plan.  More >>

More >>

South Africa: The Fear of Collapse

It might appear that changing economic institutions shouldn’t be that difficult. If you have power, you should be able to change things in a direction you favor. Simple. But not so simple in South Africa. The majority had power after 1994 in the shape of the government of the African National Congress (ANC), but they were very afraid that if they moved too soon and too fast, then they would alienate the white segment of the population, who owned the land and the capital stock, and this would precipitate an economic collapse.
White rule was not just a matter of keeping black wages low as we saw in our previous post. Blacks had been herded into townships placed at some distance from jobs where the whites could control and monitor people. Many, including nearly all the women, had been pushed far into marginal rural areas, notably the so-called homelands. And of course, the educational system had systematically discriminated against blacks who were not in a position to just take over the assets owned by whites and use them as productively.
The ANC rightly feared that the mass expropriation of white assets would lead to economic collapse which could create falls in living standards and who knows what types of populist challenges and political instability.
When faced with these challenges, what could the ANC do?
They had power, but it was difficult to use it. So they opted for a gradual approach, driven party by their idea that it would be possible to create an inclusive society which included not just the blacks, but also their former oppressors.
In consequence the institutional reforms implemented after 1994 were modest. There was to be no land reform; instead there would be market friendly “willing buyer, willing seller” transactions facilitated by the government. Most towns had their nice white areas and outside were the townships where the blacks lived in shacks, without toilets, without running water, without electricity. The white property was to be left alone; instead the conditions in the townships would be ameliorated. Proper houses could replace the shacks, electricity could be put in, water be provided. In other places policy was just as modest.
Whites were worried about the macroeconomy. So the ANC agreed to an independent central bank, something that the whites had not deemed necessary when they were running the country.
The position of the whites in this was a little strange. It was as if they had said: OK yes it’s true that for several hundred years we have been exploiting you, forcing down your wages, stealing your land, but now we have democracy and we have to respect private property and free markets (something rather inconspicuous during white rule when markets were continually rigged in favor of whites and against blacks). The ANC in response just ate humble pie.
Nevertheless, the ANC made progress. They created a vibrant participatory democracy, something that white rule had never dreamed of. They created a new system of social transfers which radically reduced poverty. They built three million new houses for poor people in the townships.
But inequality, rather than going down, went up. Of course some of that increase in inequality has been due to the emergence of black businesses and a black professional class. All the same, the typical business in South Africa is still remarkably similar to what it was before 1994: the whites own and the blacks do the work. Look around and you’ll see that blacks still walk while the whites drive.

"Up Heartbreak Hill": Native and modern [Documentary]

By Find out more at ‪‪http://www.pbs.org/pov/upheartbreakhill‬ "Up Heartbreak Hill" will air July 26, 2012 on PBS. Check local listings. A documentary film by Erica Scharf.

Thomas and Tamara are track stars at their rural New Mexico high school. Like many teenagers, they are torn between the lure of brighter futures elsewhere and the ties that bind them to home. For these teens, however, home is an impoverished town on the Navajo reservation, and leaving means separating from family, tradition and the land that has been theirs for generations. Erica Scharf's 'Up Heartbreak Hill' is a moving look at a new generation of Americans struggling to be both Native and modern.

El Tea Party apoya a Marco Rubio como vicepresidente

(ABC News) Sen. Marco Rubio today got the nod to be the 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee — from the nation’s largest Tea Party group, not Mitt Romney.
The Florida senator — the only Republican whom Romney has confirmed is being vetted for a #2 spot on the ticket — was the top preferred choice of thousands of surveyed Tea Party Express members, the group announced today.
“It is not a big surprise that Marco Rubio is the favorite candidate of the tea party for the vice-presidential nod. He ran as a strong fiscal conservative, and he has delivered with his record in the U.S. Senate for the last two years,” said the group’s president Amy Kremer in a statement. “The only surprise is that he led the other excellent candidates by such a wide margin.”

Is communist and pornographer F.M. Davis Obama's real father?

A professional graphic artist who examined the 1973 photo believes the image of Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, was airbrushed into the scene to cover up an African-American man who was standing next to Obama at the Honolulu airport.
Filmmaker Joel Gilbert, who commissioned the analysis, told WND there’s substantial evidence that the man in the original photograph was Frank Marshall Davis, the Communist Party member, pro-Soviet propagandist and pornographer who played a fatherly role in Obama’s teen years.

U.S. troops allow to march in a gay pride on military uniform

WND/  Bob Unruh
In what appears to be an extraordinary reversal of military policy, members of the U.S. armed forces say they have been given permission by their commanding officers to march in a “gay pride” parade Saturday – while wearing their service-issued uniforms.
Meanwhile, WND has learned, one of the top officers who approved the decision has since entered retirement.
The top echelons of the U.S. Air Force approved a request by a senior recruiter based in Arizona to join “a uniformed, active-duty military contingent” in a San Diego homosexual pride event, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.
The decision breaks down generations of tight limits on when and where a service member is allowed to appear in uniform, and appears to stray from the Department of Defense regulations on the use of uniforms, dated 2005 and signed by Defense Undersecretary David S.C. Chu, which says using the U.S. military uniform is prohibited in a number of scenarios.
Those include “in connection with furthering political activities, private employment or commercial interests, when an inference of official sponsorship of the activity or interest may be drawn.”
Using the uniform also is banned “When wearing the uniform may tend to bring discredit upon the armed forces,” and while former members are allowed to wear them for funerals, memorial services, weddings, and “other parades … in which any active or reserve United States military unit is taking part,” the regulations state, “wearing of the uniform or any part thereof at any other time or for any other purpose is prohibited.”   Read >>

Is terrorist Omar Khadr welcome back to Canada ?

Canadian Free Press/  Lorette C. Luzajic
Tarek Fatah would gladly have terrorist Omar Khadr over for dinner, he told the Canadian Patriotic Society in Toronto on Wednesday evening. Most certainly the young Canadian, an inmate at Guantanamo, can come back to Canada, his country.
Fatah, a Muslim and tireless human rights activist, is speaking at The Return of Omar Khadr- the Unholy Alliance of Islamism and the Left, not to the usual deluded who frequently gather to decry the alleged “torture” of this “child soldier.” The cold blooded killer, who trained eagerly and willingly with al Qaeda in poisons, bomb making, and urban warfare tactics, is the darling of the “social justice” crowd. There is the usual dead silence from these about the hundreds of thousands of innocent children enduring real torture and slavery and rape and castration, but an unrepentant jihadist? Now there’s a Canadian hero.

Acusado de espionaje periodista cubano

A top Cuban journalist faces a 15-year prison sentence for spying, just two years after Raúl Castro issued an unusually public praise for his exposé of a scandalously botched public works project, according to reports.
José Antonio Torres was the correspondent in eastern Santiago de Cuba, the island’s second largest city, for the newspaper Granma, the official voice of the ruling Communist Party, until his arrest in February 2011.
Prosecutors sought the 15-year sentence on a charge of espionage during a court hearing in mid-June, according to a post Wednesday in the Spain-based blog Diario de Cuba — Cuba Diary — which first reported the Torres case in March of 2011.
Dissident Jose Daniel Ferrer said prisoners he met in April in a Santiago police station during one of his frequent detentions arrests had told him that Torres was being held in Aguadores prison on the outskirts of the city and had been charged with spying.
Torres told fellow inmates that he was innocent and remained a staunch government supporter, Ferrer said. His wife turned down offers of assistance from Havana human rights activist Elizardo Sánchez.

U.S. border agents say they arrested a Cuban immigrant crossing from Windsor, Ontario, after discovering he was wanted for attempted murder in Miami.
Customs and Border Patrol said in a statement Wednesday that Pablo A. Perez-Castellanos was on a bus carrying passengers through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel on Sunday.
The agency says Perez-Castellanos told them he was returning to the U.S. after a three-month visit to Cuba. He's a Cuban citizen with U.S. residency status.
The agency say a check revealed that he had a March 19 felony warrant from Florida accusing him of kidnapping, burglary with assault and battery, attempted premeditated murder and child abuse.
He's being held in the Macomb County jail pending extradition proceedings.
Details of the case leading to the charges weren't immediately known.

A CUBAN man has spent 47 days stuck on a ferry after visa troubles left him unable to disembark in his home city of St Petersburg in Russia, The Moscow Times reports.
Luis Cespedes, 41, thought he was taking a routine trip back to his adopted home when he left Helsinki aboard the Princess Maria on June 4.
But in a story reminiscent of the Tom Hanks film "The Terminal", Russian officials refused to let him off the ferry in St Petersburg because of multiple visa infractions, the Times report said.
And when he tried to return to Helsinki, Finnish officials would not let him off the boat because his visa had expired while he was at sea.
He ended up sailing back and forth on the ferry 21 times before the Russian border guards finally took pity on him on Monday.
Mr Cespedes, an architect and Latin dance teacher who had lived in Russia for ten years, told Ekho Moskvy radio "I don't want to offend anybody, but it was an idiotic situation."
"I never thought I couldn't get off the boat at St Petersburg," he told the BBC.
His friends on shore helped pay for phone calls pleading his case, a friend told the BBC, and the crew of the ferry took pity on him, giving him free food and a cabbage. To express his gratitude he worked as an on-board waiter.
He admitted previously overstaying his 30-day tourist visa, but said appeals to the migration service and other officials had fallen on deaf ears.
But other officials said it was Mr Cespedes' own fault.
Alexei Zlobin, a film director who is making a documentary about the trip, said Mr Cespedes is still troubled by the ordeal.
"He just cries and says nothing," he told Fontanka.ru. "Sometimes, however, he smiles and almost jumps with joy."
Mr Cespedes told the BBC "what I feel is a kind of happiness that cannot be described."
But Mr Cespedes' visa troubles may not yet be over: now he has to submit new papers to stay in Russia, and he also has to find his way back to Cuba to avoid breaking that country's migration rules.  More >>

Mas >>
