MONTREAL - Richard Marcotte, the mayor of Mascouche charged with
corruption, was arrested Thursday night upon his return from Cuba and
taken to police headquarters for interrogation.
Sûreté du Québec officers apprehended Marcotte in the Montreal airport around midnight.
As of 10:42 a.m. Friday morning, he was still under custody at the SQ building on Parthenais St.
Officers of UPAC, Quebec's anti-corruption squad, had raided Marcotte's home during his absence.
He is charged with fraud, conspiracy, acts of corruption within municipal government, breach of trust, and fraud against government.
Marcotte previously came under fire in 2010 for his reported ties to various construction contractors.
An investigation by Radio-Canada's Enquête program alleged that the mayor was involved in a scheme in which his party received funding in return for the awarding of municipal contracts.
