Cuban Hairon “ El Maja” Socarras continued his ascent in the junior featherweight division with a fourth round knockout of Jamal Parram in front of a crowd of 2,000 at the Casino Miami Jai-Alai, but the end came with controversy.
The 20-year old Socarras, (10-0-1, KO) who now resides in Miami and has become a local favorite, sought to inflict punishment on his opponent from the beginning of the bout, but Parram (7-10-1, 5 KO) attempted to neutralize the attack by holding, rabbit punching and hitting him low through the first three rounds.
In the fourth, Parram tried to mount an attack of his own, but as he came in on one occasion he abruptly went down. The turn of events came at close quarters in the middle of the ring, so there was confusion as to whether it was a punch or a head-butt that brought Parram crashing to the canvas. It appeared to many that the two fighters clashed heads. Referee James Warring ruled it a punch and counted out Parram at 2 minutes 36 seconds of the round. Some in the crowd thought they saw Socarras land a right hand, and some said they clearly saw them butt heads before the conclusion.
Parram was to be transported to a local hospital with a possible broken jaw.
Parram said it was a head-butt as he left the ring, but Socarras had a different story.
“I landed a right hook to the body that put him down,” Socarras said. “He was coming in and I caught him.”
The fight goes into the record books as a knockout win for Socarras, who continues to attract a lot of supporters.
“He's a very good kid,” said Jorge Rubio, who trains Socarras. “There's something about him that calls people to him. He keeps bringing good crowds every time he fights. He still has a little to go to be a true contender, but he will get there. He has what it takes.”
