Libya declares-cease fire after U.N. approves intervention

Libya on Friday declared a cease-fire in its battle against rebels opposing longtime leader Moammar Gaddafi, saying it was acting to protect civilians in the wake of a U.N. Security Council resolution that opened the door to military action.

“We decided on an immediate cease-fire and on an immediate stop to all military operations,” Libyan foreign Minister Musa Kusa told reporters in the capital, Tripoli. He said Libya “takes great interest in protecting civilians” and that it would also protect foreigners and foreign assets in the country.
The announcement came after the Security Council on Thursday evening authorized the use of “all necessary measures” to protect civilians in Libya, paving the way for air and naval attacks against Gaddafi’s forces as he vowed to level Benghazi, the rebel’s main stronghold and Libya’s second-largest city.
