A four-year RCMP investigation has led to arrest warrants being issued for two former Winnipeggers on terrorism-related charges.
The Mounties allege that Ferid Ahmed Imam, 30, and Maiwant Yar, 27, are part of a conspiracy to participate in the activities of a terrorist group. Both men, former University of Manitoba students, went to Pakistan in March of 2007 but their whereabouts now are unknown, according to RCMP.
The RCMP, at a press conference in Winnipeg on Tuesday, said the investigation, called Project Darken, also involved the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, the FBI and other international law enforcement agencies.
The charges against the two men have been laid in absentia and a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for both.
According to a Globe and Mail report, the RCMP allege the al-Qaeda members behind a 2009 plot to blow up packed subway cars in New York were trained by Imam.
