Winds have been blowing radiation from crippled Japanese nuclear power plants toward the open ocean, where it has been dispersed, the World Meteorological Organization said Tuesday.
Monitoring centres in Japan, China and Russia are tracking prevailing winds from the northeast coast of Japan. So far, the UN weather agency said, they’ve been blowing “to the northeast and east, toward the open ocean.”
That means China, Russia and British Columbia were not in danger five days after a level 9 earthquake and massive tsunami shattered the Fukushima nuclear plants. Health Canada also said Tuesday that the radiation poses no safety risk to Canadians.
