Egyptian prime minister resigns ahead of protests

CAIRO - A close ally of ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak resigned as the country's prime minister Thursday, an apparent bid to head off demonstrations planned for Friday by activists frustrated with the country's slow pace of reform.
