Lukashenko May Want to Placate Brussels Ahead of the IMF’s Annual Review on Belarus
 
By Tom Balmforth Russia Profile 02/03/2011 Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has tried to look boldly defiant while the EU has imposed sanctions on Belarus, and Moscow has bristled at the continued detention of two Russian citizens in Minsk. Four-time president Lukashenko may not be worried by the new round of EU sanctions, but he may be wondering how he can placate the EU so that its 27 members vote in favor of financial assistance to Belarus at the IMF annual review due in March.
