The Miami Herald

A Miami Beach lifeguard is vowing to try again after her attempt to cross the Florida
Straits on a paddle board fell short over the weekend.

Cynthia Aguilar jumped in the water just a few miles off Cuba on Friday morning and began her attempt to paddle a record-breaking 130 miles to Key West. But her crew called off the mission about 24 miles short of Key West, Aguilar said on Big 105.9's Paul and Young Ron show Monday morning.

Her biggest problems: the currents, the cold and a slew of man-o-war.

"It was pretty painful, and I did get hypothermia, too," she said on the radio show while describing her encounter with the man-o-war. "I was just pulling hair off my arm."

She announced the mission as a means to raise $100,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida.
