'Benghazi terror suspect' Faraj al-Shibli found dead in Libya

A suspect in the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, that claimed the life of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, was found dead Monday, according to reports from CNN.

The network cites a 'Libyan source and locals in the town of Marj,' who say Faraj al-Shibli was found dead in the eastern Libyan town.

The suspected terrorist al-Shibli was last seen as he was being detained by a local militia in Marj on Friday or Saturday.

Intelligence officials discovered a link between al-Shibli and al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which officials believe took part in the attack on the U.S. diplomatic complex in Benghazi.

CNN reports that al-Shibli also had contact with al Qaeda members in Pakistan.

In March 2013, al-Shibli was detained by Libyan officials who suspected he had played a part in the attack. During his detention, FBI officials were allowed to interview him in front of Libyan officials.

The Libyan warlord who allegedly led the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, has been captured by Delta Force commandos.

Ahmed Abu Khattala was taken off the streets of Benghazi and whisked away to a 'secure location outside of Libya' for interrogation on Sunday, the Washington Post reports.

Fox News reports that he is currently en route to the United States aboard a U.S. Navy ship. Once on American soil, he is expected to face trial on terrorism charges in federal court in Washington, D.C.

Al Qaeda (ISIS) Captured 52 US-Made M198 Howitzers From Iraqi Army, Cost $500K Each

Excerpted from WASHINGTON TIMES: Sunni radicals with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) may have captured as many as 52 U.S.-made M198 howitzers in their march across Iraq in June.

“They shouldn’t have too much trouble shelling large area targets like a city if they have sufficient ammo,” Jeremy Binnie of the British military consultancy HIS Janes toldMcClatchy news service Monday.

The artillery weapons, which cost roughly $500,000 each, include GPS aiming systems.

Mr. Binnie told McClatchy that the Islamic terrorist organization would have a difficult time figuring out exactly how to use the technology’s pinpoint accuracy, but that members would still be able to do significant damage. Each howitzer has a range of 20 miles and can fire two rounds per minute.

In addition to the stolen artillery weapons, ISIL is also in possession of 1,500 armored Humvees, McClatchy reported.

New ISIS Recruitment Video Uses Hockey, Fishing Footage to Pander to Canadians

The jihadist terror group Islamic State--formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS)--has released a new video attempting to court Canadians to the cause of jihad; it stars a Canadian man named André Poulin, who was killed in battle in Syria.

In the video, Poulin is introduced as "Abu Muslim," and he explains that he was not born into Islam but found it later, and that he left a very comfortable life in Canada to live in Syria, or "Sham." Poulin, in English, explains that he left Canada because it was impossible to live among non-Muslims and properly practice the version of his faith he found with ISIS. “I originally come from Canada. Before Islam, I was like any regular Canadian. I watched hockey. I went to the cottage in the summertime. I loved to fish. I wanted to go hunting. I liked outdoors. I liked sports,” he explains. “I was a very good person.”

While he speaks, B-roll footage of Canadians playing hockey, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors plays. It is an attempt, presumably, to show that people from all walks of life can abandon their lives at home, no matter how comfortable, and come to the battlefields of Iraq and Syria to wage jihad. Instead, it presents an enticing picture of Canada that comes off more as a tourist video than jihadist propaganda.

Poulin explains that he was "a regular person," not someone with significant social problems or triggers that would make him violent. "It wasn't like I was some social outcast. It wasn't like I was an anarchist. ... Mujahidin are regular people, too." He adds that ISIS not only needs fighters, but "engineers, volunteers, fundraisers" and that "there is a role for everybody here in Syria."

The video draws to a close with footage of Poulin fighting in Islam and being killed. It ends--in case the viewer does not believe that he is dead--with graphic footage of Poulin's body, edited using a soft-lens filter to infer that he is now in a positive afterlife.

The National Post writes that Poulin was not a "regular person" in Canada, however, as he repeatedly found himself in trouble with the law over violent threats. "He was a troubled youth who had repeated brushes with the law for crimes such as uttering threats until he left to remake himself as a jihadist fighter," explains the publication.

ISIS recruitment in Canada has become a major problem for law enforcement in the past several months. According to The Globe and Mail, about 130 jihadists are believed to have left Canada to fight in "overseas conflicts," mostly in Iraq and Syria. There is no estimate of how many of them have died in battle. The problem has become particularly acute in the city of Calgary, where Calgary police Chief Rick Hanson warned that “this is an issue that’s not going away and in the near future will continue to grow."

ISIS seizes uranium from lab; experts downplay 'dirty bomb' threat

Iraqi jihadists have grabbed 88 pounds of uranium compounds from a Mosul University science lab, but U.S. and international weapons experts are downplaying the possibility the deadly toxins could be used to make a so-called "dirty bomb."
The material, believed to be low-grade, unenriched uranium mixed with other elements, was taken from a science lab at Mosul University by ISIS, the terrorist group that took over Iraq's second-largest city last month and has vowed to attack Baghdad. Iraq notified the UN in a July 8 letter which sought international help to "stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad," according to Reuters, which saw the letter.
Although the material is not believed to be weaponized, and ISIS does not have known missile delivery capability, the theft stoked fear that a dirty bomb - a primitive explosive used to disseminate radioactive material - could be fashioned from the uranium compounds.

"It explodes and the terrorist is banking on the fear factor of radiation. That’s what we are looking at here at worst.”
Iraq's Foreign Ministry said the compounds were used at Mosul University labs in "very limited quantities" for research, and that they were slated for destruction before ISIS took over the city.
Former International Atomic Energy Agency chief inspector Olli Heinonen said that if the material came from a university it most likely is laboratory chemicals consisting of natural or depleted uranium.
"You cannot make a nuclear explosive from this amount, but all uranium compounds are poisonous," Heinonen told Reuters. "This material is also not 'good' enough for a dirty bomb."
The letter was sent by Iraq's UN Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said the U.S. is aware of the situation, but does not believe the uranium is weaponized.
“We do not believe that there is weaponized or enriched uranium in Iraq,” Warren said. "Obviously we’ve seen the letter that the Iraqi government has sent to the United Nations. We cannot independently confirm who has control of this uranium.
"It’s important to note that in 2004 the U.S. Department of Energy worked with the Iraqis to remove all enriched uranium from Iraq," Warren added. "So we believe that the enriched uranium has all been removed from Iraq and that this material that is being discussed I think came from a university so it’s more of an academically oriented material.”
David Albright, of the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, said the likelihood of fashioning a dirty bomb from the stolen materials was remote, noting uranium is not very radioactive.
"However, any uranium in the hands of a terrorist group is concerning, since it shows interest in nuclear material and their interest is unlikely to be for peaceful purposes," Albright, a former IAEA weapons inspector, told FoxNews.com.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich also said the seizure likely posed no direct threat. But, he said the development is troubling.
"The sheer fact that the terrorists ... show unmistakable interest in nuclear and chemical materials is, of course, very alarming," Lukashevivh said.
Mark Hibbs of the Carnegie Endowment think tank told Reuters UN inspectors had previously scoured Mosul, including several universities following the Gulf War. He said what remained was uranium liquid wastes, sources, uranium oxides and uranium tetrafluoride.
"Some of these items are still there, but there's no enriched uranium," he said.
Earlier this week, Iraq's U.N. envoy said that the government had lost control of a former chemical weapons facility near Baghdad to "armed terrorist groups."

Who Is the Boston Bombing Widow?

The wife of the dead Boston Marathon bombing suspect has never been implicated in the attack, but her proximity to it has put her in a prison without bars.

Katherine Russell, who married Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2010, rarely ventures outside of her Rhode Island home anymore, according to neighbors — so little is known about her beyond what first impressions were revealed nearly a year ago.

Here’s what we do know.

What’s her background?

Katherine, 25, is the oldest of three daughters in the Russell family, from North Kingstown, R.I. Her father, a Navy veteran, is a physician in Providence, and her mother is a nurse.

Katherine is a 2007 graduate of North Kingstown Senior High School in Rhode Island. She attended Suffolk University in Boston, studying communication from the fall of 2007 to the spring of 2010, but did not receive a diploma, a spokesman told NBC News.

When did she convert to Islam?

It’s unclear, but friends and neighbors have said that when she returned to Rhode Island in 2010, she had a young daughter and had taken to wearing a hijab and Islamic dress, which she still dons.

She reportedly married Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the summer of 2010, at a mosque outside of Boston, in a small ceremony with two witnesses.

There were some early reports that she had returned to Christianity after the April 15, 2013, bombings, but her lawyer has said that is not true.

A Facebook page called Muslims in Support of Katherine Tsarnaev was created after her name became public, and it currently has nearly 2,000 members.

Is she being investigated?

She has not been named as a suspect, but the FBI has interviewed her, and it has been reported that phone records showed she spoke to her husband three days after the bombing — just after his photograph was released by investigators. It was just before Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police and his younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was injured and captured.

Her lawyer, Amato DeLuca, has said that her sisters testified before the grand jury investigating the case in December, and her parents testified last September. But she has not been called to testify, the lawyer said.

DeLuca told The Associated Press that he was informed last year “she was not a target of the investigation,” but the fact that she hasn’t been called to testify yet could indicate that investigators are gathering evidence on her.

Where is she now?

While she’s no longer continually hounded by the media, the widow reportedly still gets stares at supermarkets and gas stations, according to a Yahoo News story written about her last weekend. Her lawyer says she has received death threats.

She was last seen publicly in a traffic court in Wrentham, Mass., in January, where she was fined $150 for driving with a suspended license, speeding and driving an unregistered car.

Neighbors near her North Kingston home told NBC News this week that the family is barely seen anymore.

“I think they really just want their privacy and I respect that,” said Paula Gilette, who lives next door.

What's next?

While it still remains to be seen if she will ever be charged in connection to the Boston Marathon bombings, her lawyer this week revealed that a federal grand jury asked her for items that belonged to one of the victims in a triple slaying in a Boston suburb nearly three years ago.

DeLuca said a grand jury asked her for items that belonged to Brendan Mess, one of the three people killed in the Waltham triple slaying and a friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev's.

The lawyer claimed Russell doesn't have anything that belongs to Mess.

Islamist Internet threat 'theatre,' expert says

OTTAWA -- Canada is the latest western country to receive an Internet threat from an Islamic militant group fighting in Syria's civil war.

"This is a message to Canada and all of America," says a young English-speaking man on a recently uploaded YouTube video. "We are coming and we will destroy you."

The man, who in the 75-second clip is surrounded by masked people holding rifles, claims to be a member of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIL.

"I (came) to this land for one reason alone," the man says before tearing and burning what looks like a passport, "I left comfort for one reason alone: For (God)."

ISIL, which is operating in Syria, has been publicly disavowed by al-Qaeda for being too unruly and unmanageable.

Mubin Shaikh, an expert on Islamic militant groups, says that ISIL is known to be so vicious it kills fellow Muslims whom the group claims don't subscribe to its brand of Islam.

The former CSIS and RCMP mole who infiltrated the Toronto 18 terror cell in 2006, says he is completing his PhD.

He says Canadians shouldn't be too concerned about the video since it is most likely staged and being used for marketing purposes.

"This video clip is theatre," he said. "It served a number of purposes; it appeals to (ISIL's) own groups and those they want to recruit."

The surveillance unit came "under fire by community activists who accused the department of abusing civil rights."

According to the Associated Press, the surveillance unit "relied on plainclothes officers to eavesdrop on people in bookstores, restaurants, and mosques."

Starting in 2011, "the AP documented that police had systematically spied on Muslim neighborhoods, listened in on sermons, infiltrated colleges, and photographed law-abiding citizens as part of a broad effort to watch communities where terror cells might operate."

This documentation came in a series of reports that "stirred debate over whether the NYPD was infringing on the civil rights of Muslims and illegally engaging in religious and ethnic profiling."

The AP reports also revealed then-police commissioner Ray Kelly "had brought in a CIA official to help develop an intelligence division unlike that of any other U.S. police department." This "prompted an investigation by the CIA's inspector general," which found the agency had not broken any laws forbidding it from "domestic spying."

However, the IG did criticize a CIA agent's involvement "without sufficient supervision."

El señor Zuluaga dijo que sacar a “El Paisa” del país "es otro hecho de impunidad que podría producirse en Colombia, si se confirma la versión de que el sanguinario guerrillero conocido con el alias de El Paisa va a ser enviado por Las Farc y el Gobierno a las negociaciones de La Habana".

What took it so long?

Hadn't "experts" assured us that Castro had long given up these activities?

Where's the oversight?

According to the Castro regime, this new decree supposedly demonstrates its "commitment in the fight against money laundering, financing terrorism and the proliferation of weapons."

So says the regime that was recently caught red-handed lying to the international community about its illegal proliferation of weapons to North Korea.

Only in Canada: Man found with pipe bomb at Edmonton airport allowed to fly

An 18-year-old man who was allowed to get on a flight at Edmonton International Airport in September after he was caught bringing a pipe bomb to security has been sentenced for possession of an explosive device.​

Skylar Vincent Murphy was caught with the pipe bomb on Sept. 20. Security took the explosive away, but Murphy was given the go-ahead to continue on his flight. Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) alerted RCMP to the case four days later. Murphy was arrested by Leduc RCMP on Sept. 27.

In an email response to questions from CBC News, CATSA spokesman Mathieu Larocque did not address why Murphy was allowed to get on the plane. 

"Screening officers do not have the authority to apprehend or detain passengers," he wrote. "When they see something potentially illegal, the(y) contact the police."

On Dec. 5, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year probation and a $100 fine.

He is also prohibited from possessing explosives, firearms or ammunition for one year, and must also make a $500 donation to the University of Alberta burn unit.

"I sleep well. It's the politicians who are to blame for failing to come to an agreement and resorting to violence," he said in 2007.

Kalashnikov died in a hospital in Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurtia republic where he lived, said Viktor Chulkov, a spokesman for the republic's president. He did not give a cause of death. Kalashnikov had been hospitalized for the past month with unspecified health problems.

The AK-47 — "Avtomat Kalashnikov" and the year it went into production — is the world's most popular firearm, favored by guerrillas, terrorists and the soldiers of many armies. An estimated 100 million guns are spread worldwide.

Though it isn't especially accurate, its ruggedness and simplicity are exemplary: it performs in sandy or wet conditions that jam more sophisticated weapons such as the U.S. M-16.

"During the Vietnam war, American soldiers would throw away their M-16s to grab AK-47s and bullets for it from dead Vietnamese soldiers," Kalashnikov said in July 2007 at a ceremony marking the rifle's 60th anniversary.

The weapon's suitability for jungle and desert fighting made it nearly ideal for the Third World insurgents backed by the Soviet Union, and Moscow not only distributed the AK-47 widely but also licensed its production in some 30 other countries.

The gun's status among revolutionaries and national-liberation struggles is enshrined on the flag of Mozambique.

Kalashnikov, born into a peasant family in Siberia, began his working life as a railroad clerk. After he joined the Red Army in 1938, he began to show mechanical flair by inventing several modifications for Soviet tanks.

The moment that firmly set his course was in the 1941 battle of Bryansk against Nazi forces, when a shell hit his tank. Recovering from wounds in the hospital, Kalashnikov brooded about the superior automatic rifles he'd seen the Nazis deploy; his rough ideas and revisions bore fruit five years later.

"Blame the Nazi Germans for making me become a gun designer," said Kalashnikov. "I always wanted to construct agricultural machinery."

In 2007, President Vladimir Putin praised him, saying "The Kalashnikov rifle is a symbol of the creative genius of our people."

Over his career, he was decorated with numerous honors, including the Hero of Socialist Labor and Order of Lenin and Stalin Prize. But because his invention was never patented, he didn't get rich off royalties.

"At that time in our country patenting inventions wasn't an issue. We worked for Socialist society, for the good of the people, which I never regret," he once said.

Kalashnikov continued working into his late 80s as chief designer of the Izmash company that first built the AK-47. He also traveled the world helping Russia negotiate new arms deals, and he wrote books on his life, about arms and about youth education.

"After the collapse of the great and mighty Soviet Union so much crap has been imposed on us, especially on the younger generation," he said. "I wrote six books to help them find their way in life."

He said he was proud of his bronze bust installed in his native village of Kurya in the Siberian region of Altai. He said newlyweds bring flowers to the bust. "They whisper 'Uncle Misha, wish us happiness and healthy kids,'" he said. "What other gun designer can boast of that?"

Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47, died at age 94 Monday after a decorated career in the Russian military. His signature invention has been reproduced more than 100 million times since 2009, and is the world’s most popular firearm. Here are 10 things you should know about Mikhail Kalashnikov:

1. He aspired to be a poet. As a boy, Kalashnikov loved machinery but also had an affinity for poetry. He wrote poetry all his life, along with six books.

2. He once hitchhiked home to Russia. Kalashnikov was born in Kurya, Russia, but his family was deported to Siberia under the Stalin regime when he was a child. He left them to return to Kurya after the seventh grade, hitch-hiking nearly 1,000 kilometers, or more than 600 miles.

3. His son is also an arms dealer. Kalashnikov had four children with his engineer wife, Ekaterina Viktorovna Moiseyeva. Their youngest son, Victor, is a prominent small arms dealer who invented the PP-19 Bizon submachine gun.

4. He was injured in the military. Kalashnikov joined the military at 19 and served in the Russian tank division, where he invented improvements to the tanks. When he was injured by the Nazis in the Battle of Bryansk, he began working on weapons creation throughout his recovery.

5. The AK-47 is named after him. Kalashnikov’s signature invention, the AK-47 stands for “Avtomat Kalashnikov.” Avtomat is Russian for “automatic,” and 1947 was the year he invented it at age 28.

6. He has a line of vodka. Produced in St. Petersburg, Kalashnikov Vodka uses water from Lake Ladoga and is classified as a luxury export. It’s one degree stronger than regular vodka and sometimes called “military strength.”

7. He wasn’t motivated by money. Kalashnikov often said money wasn’t important to him but that he was motivated by service to his country. He was driven to design his first rifle by early Russian defeats in WWII to better-armed Germans. “I don’t like luxury,” he said. “I am after a simple decent life.”

8. He was a hunter. Kalashnikov took up hunting with his father to feed his family. He remained an avid hunter for the rest of his life, including a yearly moose hunting trip up into his 90s.

9. He had a big family. Kalashnikov was the 17th of 19 children born to his peasant parents. Only eight children survived to adulthood, and at age 6, Kalashnikov nearly died of illness himself.

10. He regretted terrorists getting hold of his inventions. At 82, Kalashnikov said he was proud of his invention, but that if he had it to do over again, he would invent something less destructive. “I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work — for example, a lawnmower,” he said. However, asked how he felt about sleeping knowing that many had died from his work, he answered: “‘I sleep very well, thank you.”

Israeli Documents Show Mossad Gave Mandela Weapons Training

Nelson Mandela received weapons training from Israel's secret service, the Mossad, in the early 1960s, documents in Israeli archives show.

Mandela was identified in the documents as David Mobsari, an alias, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported Friday. He worked with staffers who were almost certainly Mossad agents at the Israeli Embassy in Ethiopia.

At the time, Mandela, already a leader in the African National Congress, was being hunted by the apartheid regime in South Africa, which used the code name "the Black Pimpernel." Not long after his encounter with Israel, Mandela was arrested and sentenced to life in prison.

In the early 1960s, Israel was trying to cultivate newly independent states in Africa and supported groups trying to oust colonial or whites-only regimes, Haaretz said. After the 1967 Six-Day War and the occupation of the West Bank, many African leaders supported the Palestinians and Israel developed close ties with South Africa's apartheid government.

Israeli documents describe Mandela as expressing sympathy with Israel and interested in the tactics used against the British in the struggle for nationhood.

"He greeted our men with 'Shalom,' was familiar with the problems of Jewry and of Israel and gave the impression of being an intellectual," a staffer in the Ethiopian embassy and probably a Mossad agent, said in a letter to the Africa desk of the Israeli foreign office, the newspaper reported. "The staff tried to make him into a Zionist."
