Tony "Gandolfini" Soprano tribute

'Sopranos' star James Gandolfini dead at 51; teenage son found actor, called for help

ROME, Italy - James Gandolfini’s teenage son called for help after discovering his father collapsed in a bathroom, according to the manager of the Italian hotel where the “The Sopranos” star was staying. The Emmy-winning actor was later pronounced dead aged 51.
Gandolfini, who rose to fame as mob boss Tony Soprano on the hit HBO show, was still alive when the ambulance arrived, according to Antonio D'amore, who runs the Hotel Boscolo in Rome.
Barry Wetcher
The award-winning actor made even brutal mob boss Tony Soprano seem likable, but that was far from his only role.
Gandolfini suffered a suspected heart attack in the bathroom of his hotel room at about 10 p.m. local (4 p.m. ET) Wednesday, according to D’amore.
He said Gandolfini’s son, Michael, was with him in the room and called for help. Hotel staff rushed to the room and found the actor on the bathroom floor, D'amore said.
Workers tried to resuscitate him but he was later pronounced dead at the Policlinico Umberto I hospital, which is about a three-minute drive from the hotel.
Gandolfini and his family were visiting Rome prior to his scheduled appearance on Saturday as guest of honor at the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily.
"He was a genius," said "Sopranos" creator David Chase. "Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that. He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time."
Gandolfini won critical acclaim, three Emmy Awards and three Screen Actors Guild awards for playing Tony Soprano from 1999-2007.
"We're all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family," HBO said in a statement. "He was a special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility. Our hearts go out to his wife and children during this terrible time. He will be deeply missed by all of us."
Although a New Jersey native, Gandolfini didn't expect to land the role of Tony Soprano. "I thought that they would hire some good-looking guy, not George Clooney but some Italian George Clooney, and that would be that," he told Vanity Fair in 2012.
But instead, it was Gandolfini who got the nod, and he made viewers care about a mob boss who could order the murder of a family member one minute and turn around and tenderly feed the ducks that swam in his estate's swimming pool the next.
"I think you cared about Tony because David was smart enough to write the Greek chorus, through (Soprano's psychiatrist) Dr. Melfi," Gandolfini said. "So you sat there and you got to see his motives, what he was thinking, what he was trying to do, what he was trying to fix, what he was trying to become. And then you saw it didn’t really work out the way he wanted it to."
Actress Lorraine Bracco, who played Melfi, said in a statement,"We lost a giant today. I am utterly heartbroken."

John Malkovich Helps Ohio Tourist Hurt in Canada

(AP) John Malkovich helps Ohio tourist hurt in Canada
DEFIANCE, Ohio
A tourist from northwest Ohio says actor John Malkovich played a starring role in rescuing him when he fell and gashed his throat on scaffolding in Canada.

Seventy-seven-year-old Jim Walpole of Defiance fell Thursday in Toronto while on a trans-Canadian trip.

Walpole tells the Toronto Star that Malkovich, who was appearing at a local theater, applied pressure to slow the bleeding until medics arrived. The injury required 10 stitches.

Ben Quinn, whose family owns a restaurant nearby, held Walpole's head. He said by phone Monday that Malkovich "had everything under control" quickly, didn't want attention and called later to check on Walpole.

A message seeking an update was left for Walpole on Monday. Representatives for Malkovich did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Michael Douglas: Oral sex can cause cancer

www.zimbio.com
A representative for actor Michael Douglas now says the actor doesn't blame his throat cancer on oral sex.
The Guardian newspaper published an interview Monday saying that Douglas attributed his illness to the HPV virus from oral sex. When asked about his cancer, Douglas said "without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV (human papillomavirus), which actually comes from cunnilingus."
But spokesman Allen Burry said later that Douglas never said that was the cause of his cancer. He said Douglas was discussing what causes oral cancer during the interview.
Health officials say smoking and alcohol are the main causes of oral cancer. The human

papillomavirus, however, has been linked to one kind of throat cancer.
Diandra Douglas, who split from the actor in 2000, told gossip website TMZ she does not have HPV.

Angelina Jolie returns to red carpet after news of breast surgery

Angelina Jolie returned to the red carpet for the first time on Sunday, weeks after announcing that she had undergone a double mastectomy in February.

Angelina Jolie poses with Brad Pitt in London on Sunday.
Jolie joined partner Brad Pitt for the premiere of his new film, "World War Z," at Leicester Square in central London. Wearing a long, black Saint Laurent gown that criss-crossed at the chest and featured a sheer panel across her midriff, the actress smiled and waved to fans.
In an op-ed in the May 14 New York Times, Jolie revealed that she had undergone preventive surgery because she had been told she had an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer. She said her decision was informed by her mother's long fight and eventual death from breast cancer at 56.
The 37-year-old Oscar winner and humanitarian said in the Times that she carries a gene, BRCA1, that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
In an interview with Sky News from the red carpet Sunday, Jolie said she feels great. "I feel wonderful and I'm very very grateful for all the support. It's meant a lot to me." She said Pitt's support has been "extraordinary" and praised him as a "wonderful man and a wonderful father. I'm very very lucky."
Pitt was joined by fans and supporters around the world who praised Jolie for being heroic and for sharing the story of her very private ordeal.
He told Sky News that he was "very proud" of Jolie. "And I'm just relieved that that's not gonna be the thing that takes her out. The biggest fear as a father is keeping the family alive and safe and together and that she did that for us ... I get a bit teary eyed."

Angelina Jolie: I had double mastectomy because of high breast cancer risk

Angelina Jolie says she has undergone a preventive double mastectomy after being told that she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer, along with a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.
Toby Melville / Reuters
In an article published in the opinion section of Tuesday's New York Times, Jolie said her decision was informed by her mother's long fight against cancer. Marcheline Bertrand died in 2007 at age 56.
Jolie said she hoped that other women would find encouragement from her story.
"I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer," Jolie said in the Times article. "It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options."
Jolie, an actress and activist, said she carries a gene, BRCA1, that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. According to Jolie and a fact sheet from the Cancer Institute at Stanford Medicine, women with the BRCA1 gene have an average of a 65 percent lifetime risk for breast cancer, along with heightened risk of the cancer at an early age. Jolie is 37.
Jolie said three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved were completed April 27. She said the surgery included implants to reconstruct her breasts.
She said that her partner, Brad Pitt, was present for the surgeries. She said her six children, who range in age from 11 to 4, saw nothing that made them uncomfortable.
"They can see my small scars and that’s it," Jolie wrote. "Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can."
Other famous women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have undergone preventive double mastectomies, including reality star Sharon Osbourne, wife of rocker Ozzy.
"I've had cancer before and I didn't want to live under that cloud," Osborne said in an interview last fall.
In January, Miss America contestant Allyn Rose, representing the District of Columbia, announced that she carries another genetic mutation -- not BRCA1 or BRCA2 -- and plans to have a double mastectomy after her year of serving as Miss D.C.
Friends and fans were quick to support Jolie via messages on Twitter. Actress Marlee Matlin called her "brave, honest (and) strong." And "Veronica Mars" star Kristen Bell praised Jolie's article as "admirable."

Obama's Hollywood Donors Line Up for Plum Diplomatic Posts

breitbart

Hollywood denizens opened up their considerable check books for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign last fall, and now it's payback time.

A number of prestigious diplomatic posts have opened up recently, and some of the entertainment industry's more generous donors could fill them, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Among posts still in play, sources tell THR, is the coveted ambassadorship to France, previously thought to belong to hedge fund chief Marc Lasry, a major contributor to Obama and to Bill Clinton's Clinton Global Initiative....
Whomever Obama decides on for the coveted Paris post, he or she will join a surprising number of nominees with Hollywood ties. Among them: Emmy-nominated television producer Colleen Bell, said to be in line for Belgium or Hungary; longtime Democratic activist and executive John Emerson, whose name has come up as a possible ambassador to Germany; HBO executive James Costos, who according to sources is under consideration for Spain; media executive-turned-political activist Rufus Gifford, who is being eyed for Denmark; and political consultant Noah Mamet, who is in the running for Argentina.

Gwyneth Paltrow named World's Most Beautiful Woman by People

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
She has an Oscar, a rocker husband, two children, and now the title of World’s Most Beautiful Woman. Gwyneth Paltrow, 40, graces the cover of People magazine’s Most Beautiful People issue.
“I can’t believe it,” Paltrow said of the magazine’s honor. “I kept thinking, ‘This can’t be true.’ I’ve never been more surprised or flattered.”
Adele, Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kristen Stewart are among the many other stars who made People’s "Most Beautiful" list.
Paltrow works out two hours every day, and says her regular workouts can be “a nightmare,” but that she pushes herself to do them by viewing staying in shape as part of her job. “Let’s face it, it’s much easier to just chill out and watch TV,” she said.
Although her new cookbook, “It’s All Good,” stresses a strict diet, Paltrow admits that after a careful day of watching what she eats, she lets herself eat whatever she wants for dinner.  “Because I want to enjoy my life and I love pasta,” she told the magazine.
People
Gwyneth Paltrow is People magazine's "World's Most Beautiful Woman."
She also talked to the magazine about her marriage to Coldplay rocker Chris Martin. “I never make him feel hemmed in or like he’s in trouble,” she said. “And on a personal level, as friends, we really get along.”
She also addressed some untrue Internet claims, saying she doesn’t ban her children from eating carbs or eat naked in front of a mirror. “It’s all so silly,” she said of the rumors.
She spoke honestly about a miscarriage she had, saying “To this day, I feel like I’m missing that kid,” and allowed that she still thinks about possibly adding another child to her family.
The actress will reprise her role as Tony Stark’s assistant and love interest, Pepper Potts, in “Iron Man 3” which opens May 3. But Paltrow told People that because of her children, she has cut back to making only one movie per year, and she looks for something that won’t take her away from her family.
Asked what her biggest “aha moment” was, Paltrow said it was when she met her daughter, Apple. “I looked into her eyes and I was like, ‘What was I doing until this moment?’” she said.

Must-Read: Hollywood Director's Letter to Jay-Z on Cuba Trip

capitolhillcubans
cjaronu
By Hollywood Director Phil Lord ("21 Jump Street," "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs") in Huffington Post:

An Open Letter to Jay-Z

Dear Mr. Z,

I just heard your new track, “Open Letter,” released today. It’s got everything I love about your music: looping internal rhymes, an infectious beat, and imagery that draws me into a kind of swaggering, defiant fantasy.

Speaking of defiant fantasies, I’ve been following news of your recent trip to the island nation of Cuba. As the son of a Cuban refugee, and cousin and nephew to many Cubans on the island, I cringe when Americans visit Cuba for a fun island vacation. For one thing it’s illegal (which nobody seems to care about), but more importantly, it's either ignorant of or calloused to the struggles of Cubans on the island. I actually encourage my friends to travel to Cuba, to bear witness to one of the great tragedies of our time, to learn about the real Cuba, to put a human face on the caricature of Americans that the Castros propagate. Exchange and travel between our two nations should be a catalyst for change, as it has been even in my own family. But for me, Cuba is not the place to have a fun, sexy, vacation. Because for Cubans on the island and living elsewhere, it’s not.

So when I heard of your visit, I thought to myself, Jay Z seems like a smart, thoughtful guy. He doesn't realize what he's walking into. He probably just thinks Cuba is a chic place to relax with the family. He probably just doesn’t know the things I know.

He likely doesn’t know that the Cuban tourism industry is run by the Cuban military, so when he spends money at an officially sanctioned hotel, or restaurant, he is directly funding the oppressors of the Cuban people.

He doesn’t know that most Cubans have poor access to independent news sources, the internet, books, and food.

He doesn’t know that Cuba has two health systems, one for the well-connected, and one for everyone else.

He doesn’t know that before Castro, the Cuban peso traded one-to-one with the dollar, and that since then, the Castros have raided the nation’s coffers and introduced widespread poverty to a once prosperous nation.

He doesn’t know that my ancestors fought to free Cuba from Spain, and to set up a democracy to ensure that they would always be free.

He doesn’t know that in spite of those dreams, my mother and her family fled for their lives from this regime way back in 1960, as did *two million* other Cubans.

He doesn’t know about the thousands of people executed by firing squads led by sexy t-shirt icon Che Guevara.

He doesn’t know about the dissidents, artists, and librarians that currently rot in Cuba’s prisons, and the thousands more who live in fear.

He doesn’t know about Orlando Zapata Tamayo, an Afro-Cuban dissident who died in a Cuban prison in 2010 after an 80-day hunger strike.

He doesn’t know that a U.S. Citizen, Alan Gross, is currently serving a 15-year sentence in a Cuban prison for providing phones and computers to the members of the Cuban Jewish community. He doesn't know that all attempts by our government and private citizens to secure his release have been scoffed at.

He has likely forgotten about all those who have died in the Florida Straits, trying to float on makeshift boats to freedom.

He doesn’t know that contrary to popular understanding, Amnesty International reports that repression of dissidents in Cuba is actually on the rise.

He doesn’t know that when an international music luminary shows up in Cuba, his presence is unwittingly used as propaganda to support the regime.

He doesn’t know that artists in Cuba, with whom he was supposedly having a cultural exchange, serve under the close supervision of the government, and don’t enjoy the freedom to defiantly name check the President, call out a few senators, threaten to buy a kilo of cocaine just to spite the government, or suggest that they will follow up their purchase with a shooting spree, as rapped about in "Open Letter."

He doesn’t know that just because our country applies a different, some say hypocritical policy to China, it doesn’t make either regime any less oppressive, or any more acceptable.

He doesn’t know that when people say “I’ve got to visit Cuba before it gets ruined,” I think to myself, “It’s already ruined. And by the way, ruined by what? freedom of speech? walls that don’t crumble? shoes? Do you mean ruin Cuba? Or ruin your fashionable vacation in Cuba?”

He doesn’t know that when I really start to think about all this, I get so mad I can’t sleep.

He doesn’t know that when he’s wearing that hat, smoking that coveted contraband cigar, he looks like a dupe.

He doesn't know how much good he could be doing in Cuba, for Cubans, instead. Bearing witness, supporting artistic freedom, listening.

He doesn't realize that as someone privileged to be born in a free society, one in which someone could come from nothing and become a celebrated music, sports, fashion, business and political mogul, it's not only his good luck to be able to bring to light the needs of the less fortunate, it's his obligation.

But then, Jay-Z, I heard your new song, and paid attention to the lyrics.

I heard you bragging about your “White House clearance.”

I heard you talk about how much you enjoy Cuban cigars.

And I heard you tell the President I voted for, “You don’t need this shit anyway, chill with me on the beach.”

You reject the responsibility to speak up for an oppressed people, even while you take up your own cause with gusto.

Then I figured it out.

You actually know all of this stuff, you just don't care.

That's not just being a bad citizen, or a bad neighbor.

It's being a bad artist.

It's Nihilism with a beat.

-Phil Lord.

Socialist socialites: Hollywood mourns Hugo Chavez

entertainment
As thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets of Caracas to mourn President Hugo Chavez after learning of his death Tuesday, tributes began pouring in from supporters around the world — including several Hollywood heavyweights who stood by the socialist firebrand during his reign.
Actor Sean Penn, one of the Latin American leader's most vocal supporters (he once joined Chavez on the campaign trail and attended a candlelight vigil for him in Bolivia last year) said the United States had "lost a friend it never knew it had."

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and actor-director Sean Penn listen to an explanation from a doctor during a visit to a hospital Aug. 3, 2007 in San Cristobal, Venezuela.

"And poor people around the world lost a champion," Penn said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "I lost a friend I was blessed to have. My thoughts are with the family of President Chavez and the people of Venezuela."
Filmmaker Oliver Stone, who first met Chavez in December 2007 and credited him for many of the social changes taking place in South America, said the former leader would live forever in history.
''I mourn a great hero to the majority of his people and those who struggle throughout the world for a place," Stone said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "Hated by the entrenched classes, Hugo Chavez will live forever in history."
"My friend, rest finally in a peace long earned," Stone added.
Actor Danny Glover, who had visited Chavez in Venezuela several times, echoed the same sentiment.
"In sadness and in tribute to my friend, Hugo Chavez, I join with millions of Venezuelans, Latin Americans, Caribbeans, fellow U.S. citizens  and millions of freedom-loving people around the world, in hope for a rewarding future for the democratic and social development charter of the Bolivarian Revolution,” Glover told theGrio.

File picture dated Sept. 21, 2006 shows Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and actor/activist Danny Glover hugging each other while attending The CITGO-Venezuela Heating Oil Program inauguration ceremony at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Harlem, New York.
“We all embraced Hugo Chavez as a social-champion of democracy, material development, and spiritual well-being.”
Others, including Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona, paid their respects via Twitter. "So long comandante @chavezcandanga, we will miss you forever #ChavezVive," Maradona posted Wednesday
"Ruling Classes hated Hugo Chavez. RIP," tweeted comedian Roseanne Barr.
"You won't hear much nice about him in the US media in the next few days. So, I thought I'd say a couple things to provide some balance," tweeted filmmaker Michael Moore Tuesday.
"54 countries around the world allowed the US to detain(& torture) suspects. Latin America, thanks 2 Chavez, was the only place that said no," he added.
"We spoke for over an hour," Moore said of an encounter with Chavez in 2009. "He said he was happy 2 finally meet someone Bush hated more than him."

An Economist on the Oscars

Photo: pop culture geek
The “best” picture of 2012 was Argo
At least that’s the film that won the Oscar for best picture.  According to the Oscars, the decision to give this award to Argo was made by the nearly 6,000 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. As Oscars.org notes, “the Academy numbers among its members the most gifted and skilled artists and craftsmen in the motion picture world.”
In other words, this choice is made by the “experts.”
There is, though, another group that we could have listened to on Sunday night.  That group would be the people who actually spend money to go to the movies.  According to that group, Marvel’s the Avengers was the “best” picture in 2012. With domestic revenues in excess of $600 million, this filmed earned nearly $200 million more than any other picture. And when we look at world-wide revenues, this film brought in more than $1.5 billion.
Marvel’s the Avengers, though, wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar. Instead, the following nine films were chosen as the “best” films in 2012 (current world-wide revenues reported after each film).
  • Life of Pi ($583 million)
  • Les Miserables ($395 million)
  • Django Unchained ($380 million)
  • Lincoln ($245 million)
  • Argo ($207 million)
  • Silver Linings Playbook ($160 million)
  • Zero Dark Thirty ($104 million)
  • Amour ($18 million)
  • Beast of the Southern Wild ($12 million)
After Life of Pi, the combined revenue of the remaining eight films – a list that includes the “best” picture Argo – is still not quite what Marvel’s the Avengers earned.
Despite what seems like a clear endorsement by the customers of this industry, the Avengers was ignored by the Oscars.  Perhaps this is just because I am an economist, but this strikes me as odd.
Movies are not a product made just for the members the academy.  These ventures are primarily made for the general public.  And yet, when it comes time to decide which picture is “best,” the opinion of the general public seems to be ignored.  Essentially the Oscars are an industry statement to their customers that says: “We don’t think our customers are smart enough to tell us which of our products are good. So we created a ceremony to correct our customers.”
The Oscars are hardly alone in the entertainment industry.   We see something similar in the sports industry.  The fans are not generally asked to choose the “best” player in each sport.  Instead, experts (i.e. sports writers) often tell us who is the “Most Valuable Player,” who is an “All-Star,” or who is worthy of the Hall of Fame.
However, what if we asked the customers?
Consider the NBA (a league I often write about). The fans vote for the starters to the NBA All-Star game.  And if we are to believe the fans, the “best” player in the NBA – or the player who received the most votes – was Kobe Bryant. Kobe is also currently the NBA’s highest paid player. So it looks like Kobe is the “best.”
Before we jump to this conclusion, we need to revisit the argument about “best” picture.  This argument focused on the revenue the films generated.  And although Kobe is clearly popular with fans and with the Lakers, it is not clear from this that he generates the most revenue.
A published study I conducted with Martin Schmidt and Stacey Brook indicated that the primary driver of gate revenue in the NBA is wins (not a player’s “star power” and not scoring totals).  Given this research, if we want to identify the player who produces the most revenue we need to first look at wins.
TheNBAGeek, put together by Patrick Mintonreports each player’s Wins Produced (calculation details at the Wages of Wins Journal).  As of the games played on Saturday night, here are the top 5 players with respect to Wins Produced in the NBA in 2012-13.
  • Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City): 14.2 Wins Produced
  • LeBron James (Miami): 13.2 Wins Produced
  • Tyson Chandler (New York): 11.4 Wins Produced
  • Chris Paul (LA Clippers): 10.9 Wins Produced
  • James Harden (Houston): 9.8 Wins Produced

More Than 400 'Life of Pi' Visual Effects Artists Protested The Oscars

"Life of Pi" may have been a big Oscar winner Sunday night, but those responsible for bringing the CGI-filled film to life aren't celebrating.
During one of the oddest moments of the awards, VFX supervisor Bill Westenhofer was played off the Oscar stage to the "Jaws" theme while accepting his award for "Life of Pi."
The gesture came off overtly rude to critics and VFX artists considering Westenhofer was only 45 seconds into his speech.
The average speech of the past decade has clocked in at closer to two minutes.
The "Jaws" music began playing during his mention of Rhythm & Hues VFX studio.
Rhythm & Hues is the studio responsible for bringing the CGI-filled "Life of Pi" to life. It took 600 of its artists to bring Bengal tiger, Richard Parker, to life on screen.
It's also known for its work on "Snow White And The Huntsman" and bringing a pig to life in "Babe."
Earlier this month, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and laid off more than 200 employees without pay.
It's not the first VHX company to have trouble in the past few months.
Digital Domain Media Group (DDMG), the company responsible for helping to bring "Titanic" to life on the big screen, filed for bankruptcy back in September. They were soon bought for $37 million by Beijin's Galloping Horse and Mumbai-based Reliance Capital.
Later in the press room, Westenhofer said he was trying to address a bigger issue on stage regarding the importance of VHX in films.
"It’s ironic that when visual effects are dominating the box office, visual effects are struggling," said Westenhofer. "We’re artists, and if we don’t fix the business model we may lose something.”
Earlier in the day, while the primary focus during the Oscars was on the red carpet, not far off, more than 400 VFX professionals protested the event.
Called the "Piece of Pi" protest, plan, protestors held signs with slogans including "End The Subsidies War" and the one below:

Michelle Obama’s ’charm offensive’ draws criticism

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Michelle Obama appears to be everywhere these days, and that’s got critics questioning whether a first lady should be so ubiquitous.
Obama talked up hairdos with Rachael Ray, released two public service announcements with Big Bird, and promoted her anti-obesity campaign with a now-viral segment on Jimmy Fallon.
She then capped a week’s worth of public appearances with a surprise appearance on the Oscars, where she announced the Best Picture winner.
Conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin said Obama's role at the Academy Awards went too far, trivializing the White House and made "both the president and the first lady seem small and grasping."
“There is a sense of going too far and too much and becoming so ubiquitous that people don't consider you something special,” Rubin told NBC White House correspondent Kristen Welker. “She is the first lady for goodness sakes. She's not just a Hollywood celebrity."
Advertising executive Donny Deutsch agreed, calling the first lady "an uninvited guest."
"You are putting politics, like it or not, in a space that people are not necessarily invited into their home for," he said Tuesday on TODAY's Professionals panel
Obama will hit the road this week to promote the third anniversary of her “Let’s Move” campaign to fight childhood obesity. The two videos she released last week with Big Bird, the Sesame Street character who became a political football during the presidential campaign, highlighted her efforts to encourage kids to eat healthy and become more active.
She then literally acted out her “Let’s Move” motto on the late-night circuit when she performed a dance skit with Jimmy Fallon.
New York Times journalist Jodi Kantor, author of the book “The Obamas,” said the appearances are part of a carefully crafted public relations plan.
"It's almost as if her real strategy is a kind of charm offensive that is then intended to build support for her husband's initiatives,” she said.
Like all first ladies, Obama is trying to develop a second-term agenda that won’t distract from her husband’s. But she's probably feeling a confidence in her role that may not have been present in her first term, said Anita McBride, who served as chief of staff to Laura Bush.
“The difference between a first term and a second term really is the fact that you've got your grounding,” she said. “All of the lessons learned of a first term, now you can pick up and have the freedom to really act.”
Obama aides won’t reveal much about her plans for the next few years, other than saying they will share details in the next few months. In addition to her anti-obesity campaign, she’s also expected to continue her work to help military families.
“The one rule that Michelle Obama always follows is that she never wants to distract from her husband's agenda,” Kantor said.
“It’s possible that she might address tougher, more controversial issues, but I do not believe based on what aides have told me that she would do it if she thought that she was going to cause a furor and distract from what her husband was trying to get done.”

Why Anne Hathaway Was Wearing A Dress That Made It Look Like She Had A Wardrobe Malfunction

If you were watching the Oscars last night you may have had your attention diverted from Anne Hathaway's face in favor of her dress.
From a mile away, it looked like you could see through the top of Hathaway's pale pink Prada gown.
The two big seams in the dress acting like arrows didn't help either.
Considering Oscar outfits are often planned out far in advance, wouldn't someone have caught this fashion faux pas ahead of time?
Maybe not.
On the red carpet, Hathaway divulged that she decided three hours before the Oscars to go with the Prada dress instead of a pre-planned Valentino.
And, this was after Valentino sent out a press release announcing Hathaway would be wearing one of its couture gowns.
It all boils down to a last minute decision.

Limbaugh: 'Conspiracy' for Obamas at Oscars

WND/ By Joe Kovacs
First Lady Michelle Obama announces the best picture award for
"Argo" during the 85th Academy Awards.
Talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh says there was supreme irony and a possible “conspiracy” in having first lady Michelle Obama present the award for best picture Sunday night at the 85th annual Academy Awards.
“There was some real irony last night that zipped by and blew by a lot of people,” Limbaugh noted, saying it was the first time in a decade he had watched the entire broadcast from start to finish.
“The best picture award last night went to a movie named ‘Argo,’ which was about what? The rescue of embassy personnel under attack in Iran. The wife of the commander in chief who failed to rescue four Americans at an embassy/consulate in Benghazi presented it, and talked about how important it was, and how necessary it is and how great it was and all that.
“This administration FAILED in rescuing Americans under attack, and the wife of the president who failed presented the Oscar to the movie who won the best picture award about a successful rescue of embassy personnel from Iran in 1979, thereby maybe claiming credit.”
“I can’t get over it,” he continued.
Actor/director Ben Affleck in a scene from "Argo," which won the best
picture Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards.
“‘Argo.’ Rescue of six embassy personnel, Iran 1979. Obama: failure to rescue four embassy personnel. Michelle Obama presents award for best movie to ‘Argo.’ If you want to look for a conspiracy in any of this, you focus on that. You talk about irony. This regime still hasn’t come clean on what happened at Benghazi. They’ve tried to paper that over and cover that up, blame that all on a video. There hasn’t been anything courageous in one aspect of Benghazi, and certainly not from the standpoint of the [Obama] regime. But ‘Argo’ is a movie about the rescue of six embassy/CIA personnel from Iran in 1979, right under the watchful eyes of the Ayatollah Khomeini. And there’s Michelle Obama presenting the award. Best movie, Argo. And her husband didn’t do didley squat saving embassy personnel in Benghazi.”
Limbaugh said “Argo’s” victory for best picture was a no-brainer, as the powers-that-be in Hollywood were, in effect, congratulating themselves for getting involved in the 1979 rescue, since the movie focused on a phony movie being made in Iran as a ruse to enable the rescue.
He also said when it comes to the Academy Awards, “The bottom line here is that the Obamas have been snubbed. They still haven’t won an Oscar. They’ve won everything else. They’ve won Grammys. They have won a Nobel Prize. The Obamas have won lifetime-achievement awards … the Obamas have won awards that haven’t even been created. But they haven’t won an Oscar. And there were two chances for them last night: the campaign ad, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and semi-autobiography, ‘Lincoln.’ Snubbed. So Michelle shows up, presenting the award.”
Limbaugh also had praise for the talent of “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, the host of the awards broadcast, despite the fact MacFarlane is a strong advocate of left-leaning political views, while Limbaugh is a champion for the political right.
“There are a lot of characterizations about how he uses it and what direction he takes it, but there’s no denying his talent, and he’s a profoundly hard worker,” Limbaugh said of MacFarlane. “I sent him an attaboy note yesterday morning. I sent him a wish-you-well kind of note. He wrote back and said, ‘You know what? I kind of understand how you conservatives feel about the media now.’ Because they were already proclaiming him the worst host ever before the show had even aired. I mean, 12 hours before the show.”

(el-alto-sueño);

le pidieron las piernas

duras y nudosas

¿No me envidias?”.
“…Me cuidan, me cuidan un poquito entre todos. No le hacen caso a uno, siempre estoy peleando para que no me manden nada. Cuando cojo el sol por la mañana en shorts y siento el aire de mar, me parece que estoy en una playa… ¡Me van a hacer creer que estoy de vacaciones! ¿Qué diría Carlos Marx de semejantes revolucionarios?”.
