Russia launches its new ICBM from Plesetsk space centre

The Russian Strategic Missile Troops have successfully test fired an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile with a multiple re-entry vehicle from the Plesetsk cosmodrome, a Russian Defence Ministry press service official for the Strategic Missile Troops, Colonel Igor Yegorov, told a news briefing earlier this Monday.
The experimental warheads arrived in the designated area on the Kura test range in the Kamchatka Peninsula. The set goals of the launch have been fully met, Colonel Yegorov said, RIA news reports.

Garry Kasparov: 'High Time to Respond' to Putin

As Vladimir Putin is cementing his power in Crimea, those studying Russia are increasingly concerned that the West has done little to stop Putin's expansion. Human Rights Foundation Chairman Garry Kasparov warns that anything short of a full assault on Putin's kleptocracy will fail to stop him.

"It is long past time to stop listening to professors’ lectures about what Putin would never do and high time to respond to what he does — before he does it again," Kasparov writes in a column for the Washington Post on Friday. He explains that Putin's ability to win over states like Crimea depends upon knowing that the United States will exert no military force to stop him. He cites two comments from President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry that concern him most: both promise that the United States will not deploy troops to Crimea.
Kasparov argues that any attempt to diffuse tensions by taking military retaliation off the table fails because Putin and his cronies do not have the best interests of Russia in mind. He says, "They do not, except in the few areas where such interests overlap with their goal of looting as much treasure as possible." When the President explicitly denied the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, he "freely surrendered one of his greatest advantages: America's overwhelming military strength."
That is not to say that Kasparov is arguing for a military attack on Russia. On the contrary, he explicitly lays out a plan to sanction and cripple the powers that be in Russia and split the wealthy backers that keep Putin in power from Putin himself. Putin, Kasparov argues, "is a lost cause, and Russia also will be until he is gone." But the wealthy who protect him and care only about their own personal comfort are a different story. They stick with Putin, Kasparov states, because "the free world they enjoy living in has made no moves that would force them to choose between their riches and Putin."
Changing that equation with sanctions or other moves that would cripple their ability to use their wealth freely would turn them against Putin, which would immediately weaken the Russian leader. "Sanction the elites who support Putin, go after the family members they use to hide their assets abroad and scrutinize their companies," Kasparov advises.
Kasparov, who made his name as a chess legend before becoming a human rights advocate and dedicating his career to fighting the oppressive Putin regime, has reason to fear that President Obama's diminished global presence will expand Putin's influence. Kasparov fled Russia after Putin's administration began to persecute him for speaking out against them. He has since campaigned for the West to take the threat of Putin's expansion more seriously, as have many in Eastern Europe that fear Putin's resurgence.
Kasparov is not alone in his warnings that Putin will not stop at Crimea. Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who found himself abandoned by the West when Putin invaded the western Georgian provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008, wrote in a recent column in The Guardian that he had made the same argument about Georgia: Putin would not stop there. Now that Putin has ensconced himself in Ukraine, Transnistria, a region in Moldova, is clamoring to be annexed into Russia, as well. Whether Putin will send troops there next, or to Estonia, is anyone's guess.

Putin's Slow and Steady Reconquista of Latin America

When Russia annexed Crimea this week, few looked to South America for Russian support. Yet Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Argentinian President Cristina Fernández were lauding the conquest. Their support is no surprise: Putin has been cultivating it for years, reaping the rewards as the continent falls in line with the Kremlin.

The Russian Federation has never broken the ties the Soviet Union cemented with the continent's most repressive Spanish-speaking nation, Cuba. Few expected anything less from state propaganda outlet Granma than a full-throated support of Russia's colonization of Crimea, and their attack on "Ukrainian ultranationalists" delivered. The nations of South America presented Putin with a much more difficult relationship-building exercise, but one that he has taken to with zeal.
While the United States has maintained close ties with Colombia and Chile, helping the former end a guerrilla warfare crisis perpetrated by left-wing leaders in the nation, the generation of leaders calling themselves Bolivarian socialists in Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, and, to a lesser extent, Peru have all expanded their ties with Russia.
Argentina's Fernández had close ties to Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez, who coined the term "Bolivarian socialist" in honor of founding father Simón Bolívar--so close that the leader visited Chávez in the Cuban hospital he stayed in shortly before his death and prayed with him. An openly leftist leader, Fernández found her country courted by the Russian government under President Dmitry Medvedev. In 2010, Medvedev visited Russia and agreed to invest in Argentina's nuclear program, currently in existence but never having quite gotten off the ground. On Fernández's subsequent trip to Russia, the Russian premier gifted her a traditional hat, expressing the desire to "multiply ten or fifteen times" relations with Argentina. While the "several billion dollar" nuclear project never fully materialized, the diplomatic relationship continued as Argentina extended an offer for Russia to invest in its fuel projects.
Russia has also supported the annexation of the Falkland Islands to Argentina, which became the focal point of Fernández's argument in favor of the annexation of Crimea. The Falklands, an island archipelago off the coast of Argentina boasting a modest population of 2,000 humans and 500,000 sheep, has long belonged to the United Kingdom, is an English-speaking region, and is ethnically British. Despite the obvious desire to remain a part of the United Kingdom, Argentina has repeatedly insisted that the islands are rightfully its own, invading them in 1983 to laughable military results.
On Wednesday, Fernández returned the favor. Crimea "has always belonged to Russia," she said in a statement, just as the Falkland Islands have "always belonged to Argentina."
Russia's relations with other leftist South American nations have taken a similar turn. In Ecuador, where President Rafael Correa's brutal repression of the press rivals even Maduro's, Russia has found a friend. Correa made his first visit to Moscow in 2009 when the two countries agreed to a series of deals that would arm Ecuador with higher-grade military equipment in exchange for open trade.
Relations with Putin are as strong as they were with Medvedev, and after some turbulent years in which Ecuador agreed to house Russian ally Julian Assange in their UK embassy and threatened to do the same with Edward Snowden, Correa made his second trip to Moscow. For his trouble, he received a $1.5 billion energy investment and two honorary degrees.
"I am very happy and marveled by this great nation," Correa said in a statement in Moscow. "Thank you for all you have done in arts, sciences, and global thinking." He did not mention the billions invested in his country.
Putin, on his end, made clear that he considers Ecuador a valuable ally. "Ecuador is one of our strategic partners in Latin America," Putin said, according to the Ecuadorian state government, adding that the partnership was "fruitful."
Other nations on the continent have found themselves in similar situations: public support for Russia has lead Russia to invest billions in their economy. Brazil, the largest economy on the continent and a country increasingly disgruntled with President Obama's spying initiatives, is turning to Russia. They are not doing so for trade; they are doing so for defense. Last October--as Correa was visiting Moscow--Brazil signed an agreement with Russia that would give it $1 billion worth of missile defense technology, after buying tanks and assorted artillery from the country the year before. Peru, also looking to strengthen its defense, bought several military helicopters from Russia this January, long after President Ollanta Humala expressed interest in establishing a free trade deal with the nation.
Smaller countries like Bolivia have also strengthened ties with Russia. Speaking with--who else?--Russia Today last July, President Evo Morales expressed interest in having Russia invest in his country, as well. Less than a month later, Russia's petroleum corporation, Gazprom, invested $130 million in the country.
Russia's vast fuel industry gives it the upper hand with most countries in Latin America, except the one OPEC member nation on the continent: Venezuela. With Venezuela, Putin has offered both other services, like arms development, and the opposite service: finding buyers to keep the inexcusably devastated Venezuelan economy afloat. Venezuela's ties to Russia go as far back as 2001, when Hugo Chávez made his first trip there as premier. By 2006, Russia was building arms factories in Venezuela to combat the U.S. embargo on selling weapons to the country.
A decade later, a year into the Maduro regime, Putin remains an ally of the oppressive nation that is currently under scrutiny for its systematic arrest, murder, and torture of unarmed protesters. Earlier this month, Putin expressed support for Maduro, and the Venezuelan leader expressed thanks on Twitter without specifying just how big of a financial deal the countries had made. The deal would allow Maduro to expand the sales of his country's oil, however, which strengthens the power of his regime.
And so Maduro--like Fernández--has been vocal in supporting the recolonization of Crimea:

Top 5 Consequences of Putin's 'Crimea Reset'

"We are entering into our renewed relationship with our eyes open," said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton five years ago, before presenting Russia's foreign minister with the infamous bright red "reset" button.

Russia has pushed the "reset" button all right, resetting history and geography to take the Crimea back, while the U.S. and the European Union do virtually nothing. The White House announced Monday morning that President Barack Obama had imposed a set of sanctions on the Russian arms industry and senior Russian officials, but no one close to Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, according to the UK Telegraph.
The weakness of the west in facing the Russian seizure of the Crimea is likely to have a significant geopolitical effect, both in the short term and long term. Here are five of the most likely consequences of the :Crimea reset":
1. China advances claims over territory and airspace. An aggressively nationalist China was already moving to broaden its air defenses and its claims to the Senkaku Islands, despite U.S. plans to "pivot" from the Middle East to the western Pacific. It will now be even more assertive, knowing there are few consequences.
2. Al Qaeda steps up its attempts to create an Islamic caliphate. The Obama administration, having dispatched Osama bin Laden, has left Al Qaeda to expand across Africa and the Middle East. Those hoping to establish an Islamic state in the ruins of Syria and Iraq will be encouraged by the failure of the west to defend the sovereignty of Ukraine, because the artificial borders of the Middle East seem even more vulnerable now.
3. Israel plans for completely unilateral action on Iran. It is clearer than ever before that the Obama administration has no ability to enforce its own "red lines" and no will to risk armed conflict. Israel will likely set aside the task of obtaining U.S. approval for a pre-emptive strike on Iran and will make independent plans--perhaps in coordination with Saudi Arabia, which has likewise learned that Obama is not to be trusted.
4. Europe gets serious about fracking. As my colleague James Delingpole of Breitbart London observes, one of the positive side-effects of the Crimea crisis is that the EU has realized that energy independence is vital to its security. It will start to reject pseudo-scientific "green" arguments in favor of oil and gas development.
5. Russia continues to challenge U.S. allies and create crisis. The Crimea crisis is hardly over, and may reach other parts of Ukraine, as well as NATO allies in Eastern Europe, as Putin tries the same trick again. He is also expanding Russian influence into Latin America. He will only stop when the U.S. stops retreating from any possible confrontation, and commits military resources to stopping his advance. That point is still very far away.

Could Putin get Cuba back by bailing out the Castro regime again?

Silvio Canto, Jr.
According to Charles Krauthammer, President Putin of Russia sees himself in very historic and transformational terms :
"He can already see the history textbooks: Catherine the Great took Crimea, Vlad (the Great?) won it back. Not bad for a 19th-century man."
I don't know if he is "Vlad the Great" but President Putin is like the offensive coordinator who keeps throwing the long pass and scoring.  He's concluded that the other side does not have much of a pass defense.  He keeps throwing and scoring.
There is one more piece to putting the empire together.  It is Cuba, the island 90 miles away from the US and a very nice warm spot for the Russian Navy to go around the world.
How does he get Cuba back?  The answer is money and Putting has plenty of that these days.  .
First, he goes to Raul Castro and offers a lifeline. Cuba needs credit and would literally love "a sugar daddy" again.
Second, another round of Russian aid would keep the Castro brothers in power even longer.   It could replace the subsidized oil that they've been getting from Venezuela.  It would also draw the US's attention or give the Castro brothers the kind of relevance that they crave.
Third, they won't have to pay back all of those loans to Western countries.  Russia would take care of that, as it did between the Missile Crisis and the collapse of the USSR.   It's "Happy Days are here again" for the Castro dictatorship.
Again, Putin wants to put the empire back together and Castro needs a lifesaver.  It is the exactly the perfect storm that could put these two nations back together.
Yes, it is a long shot.  However, stranger things have happened.   After all, didn't Russia sign a memorandum in 1994 respecting Ukraine's borders?  Didn't we "reset" relations with Russia in 2009?
Yes, there is a "Twilight Zone" element to my post but stranger things have happened.

O'Reilly: How to handle Putin

Putin's Moves Leave World Wondering About 'Dangerous' Mindset

“He does like to act by surprise. But this one is more than just a surprise,” said Kimberly Marten, an expert on U.S.-Russian relations at Barnard College and Columbia University. “There’s something about this that doesn’t make sense.”
While the world scrambled to come up with a response and persuade the Russian president to pull back, academics were not the only ones left wondering what he was up to.
Secretary of State John Kerry called the incursion “stunning.”
And Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany, went further after speaking to Putin over the weekend. She told President Barack Obama that he seemed to be “in another world,” perhaps out of touch with reality, The New York Times reported.
There are some things we know about the psychology of Putin: He cannot abide humiliation or chaos. He will not be lectured to. He relishes the chance to poke a finger in the eye of the United States. Informed by his own training in the KGB, he is all about rebuilding Russia as a world power not to be messed with.
In his mind, the Soviet Union collapsed a generation ago, and “the West has been dancing in the end zone ever since,” David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker and the author of “Lenin’s Tomb,” about the Soviet disintegration, told MSNBC on Monday.

Kasparov Blasts Putin, Compares Sochi 2014 to Berlin 1936

edition.cnn.com

Russian chess grand master Garry Kasparov has blasted the Sochi Olympics as a propaganda show for Vladimir Putin as the games get underway in Sochi. The man believed by some to be the best chess player in history dubs the Winter Olympics a "one-man circus" and compares Sochi 2014 to Berlin 1936.

"Anyone who thinks that is an exaggeration is forgetting a very important factor," Kasparov maintained in an interview. "Hitler in 1936 was seen as a thoroughly respectable and legitimate politician."
"Moscow (1980) and Beijing (2008) were games that authoritarian systems established to generate propaganda for their country and for themselves, the ruling party," he further explained. "Sochi, as Berlin, stands under a different sign: these are games which revolve entirely around a single man. In Berlin, it was Hitler. In Sochi, it was Putin. It's about a personality cult."
The national hero has been a vocal opponent of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. He has run for political office on several occasions and has been detained for his anti-Putin activism. Former KGB general Oleg Kalugin speculated in 2007 that Putin might have Kasparov killed at some point because of his outspokenness.

Putin Dissolves State Run News Agency RIA Novosti, Tightens Control on Media

en.ria.ru

President Putin dissolved the state-run news agency RIA Novosti Monday in a move that was described as an attempt to tighten his control over the media.

RIA Novosti will be disbanded but a new state run agency called Rossiya Segodnya will be formed in the same headquarters. Rossiya Segodnya translates as Russia Today, the original name of the Kremlin's English language cable network which distributes itself via You Tube and in some hotels in the United States.
So far no connection has been drawn between the newly formed news agency and the cable network which was rebranded as RT several years ago. RT is known for being openly hostile to the US and the west, sometimes comically so. The channel supported the Occupy movement and granted a show to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
A government spokesman told RIA Novosti, for a report it produced on its own demise, that the reorganization was a cost cutting measure. But the NY Times reports that RIA Novosti was considered the most independent of the state run news agencies. The Times quotes Russian TV personality Maxim Shevchenko saying of the decision "The nest of anti-Russian media forces has been destroyed."
Another issue arising from the announcement today is the decision to place controversial TV executive Dmitry Kiselyov in charge of the replacement news agency. Kiselyov has been criticized in the past for some anti-gay comments including the suggestion that gays should not be allowed to donate organs. He once said "in the case of an automobile accident, their hearts should be buried in the ground or burned."

RIA Novosti was originally created in 1941 as the Soviet Information Bureau. It was an arm of Soviet propaganda but has since grown into a news agency with reporters in 45 countries.

Is Vladimir Putin rewriting Russia’s history books?

www.ibtimes.com
MOSCOW – The government of Russian President Vladimir Putin has stoked fears that it is resorting to Soviet techniques to stifle criticism by rewriting the country’s history text books.
Putin asked historians in February to develop a plan for a new history curriculum that would produce a single history free "from internal contradictions and ambiguities" that would cover the many difficult events in Russian and Soviet history.
Russian history books have long come under fire for their murky coverage of the dark period of Soviet terror under Communist leaders like Josef Stalin, who was known for airbrushing his enemies out of photos. Other controversial topics include the turbulent transition from communism to democracy, contemporary history and politics that many see as marred by corruption, and the breakdown of the rule of law.
But critics take particular issue with the plan for the new books, created by historians of Putin’s choosing, because they contain no reference to the protests against him in 2011 and 2012 and virtually no mention of his political foes, such as jailed tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky. They say the proposed version of history is “highly politicized and grossly distorts the facts.”
Vladimir Ryzhkov, a historian and a member of Putin’s political opposition, took aim at the new books in an article in the English language daily newspaper, The Moscow Times. He accused the new book of being a tool to “further the interests of Putin and his inner circle” and said it omits parts of contemporary history that do not chime with Putin’s version of events.
Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the Kremlin was studying the guidelines – but strongly denied accusations that they were trying to re-write history to fit the current political agenda.
"One cannot rewrite history. On the contrary, we (Russia) consistently stand against attempts to falsify the history," Peskov said.
Denis Sekirinsky, a senior research fellow of the National Committee of the Russian Historians and one of the historians behind the book’s concept, defended the guidelines for the new textbook and said the aim of the project is to "quell the fire of criticism” of Russian history.
Sekirinsky denies accusations that the new guidelines are politically motivated. “If you look at the concept, there is no ideological direction there,” he told NBC News.
However he added that access to archives and historical documents for events that took place since the late 1970s was not possible because so many of the documents are treated as government "secrets.”
But the concept of the new textbook mentions nothing about Russia’s recent political opposition movement – born in the aftermath of the 2011 parliamentary elections and around the presidential elections of 2012 – when tens of thousands of people took to the streets to protest what they said were rigged election results.
There is no reference to many critics of Putin, like Khodorkovsky, who was once Russia’s richest man but who has been in jail since 2003 after being convicted on multi-million tax evasion charges he claims were politically motivated for challenging Putin.
Boris Berezovsky, another Russian business oligarch who was a vocal critic of Putin and was living in exile in the U.K., is also omitted. He was found dead in his country home outside of London in May.
Sekirinsky said that the oligarchs who rose to prominence, including Khodorkovsky, Berezovsky, as well Roman Abramovich, currently Russia’s fifth richest man, were mentioned as a group – without being named separately, because this would take up too much space.
Sekirinsky, however, conceded that he believed Khodorkovsky should have been mentioned, but he said his opinion was knocked down by the other historians. And he said the opposition demonstrations that took place in 2011 and 2012 were not even discussed by the group of 40 people developing the concept of the book.
"Historically, this process happened,” said Sekirinsky, referring to the opposition demonstrations. “But it is unclear what [the protests] led to. Nothing happened," he said, defending the decision not to include them.
The guidelines for the new book – which will be used in all schools across the country – were submitted to the Russian Historical Society on Oct. 31.  They are expected to be introduced into the compulsory national curriculum by 2015.

The Putin Jobs Program for Amerika: Former Soviet official behind black box "track & tax" of US drivers

hasan
Hasan Ikhratra, a former Soviet official

NoisyRoom.net

Cross-Posted at Right Wing News
Comrades! Now we are sharing jobs with the glorious communist motherland of Russia!! California is not content with their socialist and Marxist leanings. Oh no… now they are painting the state Russian red and putting actual communists in bureaucratic positions of power. With just a hint of KGB swagger and a whole lot of jack booted thuggery for the surveillance state:
WASHINGTON, October 30, 2013 — The California bureaucrat behind a big brother plan to track vehicles and “tax by the mile” worked as a government transportation planner in the former USSR.
Hasan Ikhrata, Executive Director of the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), who told the Los Angeles Times “This really is a must for our nation. It is not a matter of something we might choose to do,” worked for the Moscow Metro Corporation, according to his official SCAG biography.
SCAG foresees mandatory tracking of all California motorists by 2025. A black box tax-by-the-mile pilot program is underway in Oregon and several other states. Some of the methods Oregon is experimenting with involve using GPS to track miles driven by program participants.
Ikhrata’s former employer Moscow Metro announced plans in July to track the movements of individual passengers on subways by tracking the SIM cards in their mobile phones, even if the phones are powered off, according to RT. Police operations chief of the Moscow metro, Andrey Mokhov argues that the tactic is legal because “By law, we are not allowed to trace a person without appropriate sanctions…but we can keep track of the property of companies, which is exactly what SIM cards are.”
Although Ikhrata no longer spends his days working as a Moscow planner, he appears to have imported into California’s sprawling bureaucracy an instinct which runs unchecked inside the iron machinery of the world’s most authoritarian governments: track, surveil, and ultimately control everything citizens do.
You see, it is not paranoia if the government is actually after you. It is not a conspiracy if it is provably happening. Hasan Ikhrata was supposedly chosen from a diverse pool of candidates across the country. They just didn’t say which country, although it is claimed he is a long time resident of San Bernardino County. He’s still a Russian and he’s still a commie. You can take the red out of Russia, but you can’t take the Russian out of the red. Side note: just as Russian officials are now becoming American officials, has anyone looked into who Obama is replacing the purged military officers with? Inquiring Americans would like to know. We know they are sycophants and Marxists, but are they imported? So many questions — so little time left.
The proposed tracking and surveillance of autos for the measurement of miles traveled to impose taxation will forcefully bring income into the Marxists coffers and further the economic collapse descending on America. It’s a win-win for the Progressive agenda. Tracking your every move, well, that’s priceless. Justification for this fascist move is that the government wouldn’t increase gasoline taxes and the money is needed to improve roads and bridges. Where have we heard that load of crap before? Oh yeah… on virtually every lame program used to tax and further empty our pockets since Obama took over.
Since we are down the rabbit hole on everything these days, this further infringement of our Constitutional rights is now being fought by odd bedfellows. The Tea Party, the ACLU and privacy groups are raising the alarm over the prospect of governments tracking the movements of Americans in their own vehicles. And so they should. Echoes of Ayn Rand:
We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force. – Ayn Rand
Perhaps with Russia conducting large scale nuclear drills, we should be a bit more circumspect here. Ballistic missiles (four of them at once), two by land and two by sub. Infiltrate, propagandize and invade. Sounds like a thriller to die for as we institute the Putin Jobs Program for Amerika.

Castro Studies "Putinismo" to Survive

www.putinforever.com
By Mary Anastasia O'Grady in The Wall Street Journal:

Cuba Studies 'Putinismo' for Survival Tips

If Havana uses a Russian recipe for clinging to power, investors beware.

Vladimir Putin's op-ed in the New York Times wasn't a big hit with Americans. But the Russian president does have admirers elsewhere. Some are in the Cuban military, which is rumored to be studying "putinismo." Would-be foreign investors, take note.

Ever since Fidel Castro's glorious revolution triumphed in 1959, Cuba has been in need of a benefactor. The Soviet Union played that role until it collapsed in the early 1990s. Cuba got another lifeline when Venezuela's Hugo Chávez, elected in 1998, began a state policy of providing it with cheap oil.

Even so, Cubans still live lives of privation. Venezuela's own fiscal woes are on the rise, which means that the oil subsidies are in jeopardy.

Revolutionary poverty is nothing new. But regime bigwigs in Havana fear that Raúl Castro, who is now in charge, could face serious social unrest when the ailing 87-year-old Fidel passes on. Their challenge is to find ways to feed the island without letting go of power, which might prove fatal for some of them.

The Putin model offers a way out. It permits nominal elections in which the opposition gets some seats in the parliament. On the economic front, Mr. Putin has created a loyal cadre of oligarchs who do business with foreigners.

The former KGB operative can say that Russia is no longer shaped by communist ideology. But behind the scenes, putinismo blends authoritarian political control and crony capitalism to produce a lock on power.

Writing from Russia in April 2012, development economist Deepak Lal described this mix of profits for the politically correct and repression for everybody else. His essay, in the Indian daily Business Standard, explained that "ordinary profit making has been criminalized." Citing the work of Russian lawyer Vladimir Radchenko, Mr. Lal wrote that "there are three million small and medium-scale business entrepreneurs in jail for economic crimes."

Mr. Putin is reportedly planning on forming his own personal national guard, Mr. Lal wrote. The Federal Security Service is more interested in running businesses than putting down dissidents and the hoodlums hired to do the job are unreliable. Mr. Lal also briefly described the state's renewed alliance with the Orthodox Church.

I was reminded of the parallels between Mr. Putin's Russia and Castro's promises of reform when former Cuban political prisoner Jorge Luis García Pérez Antúnez visited the Journal's New York offices this month. The 48-year-old Cuban, who spent 17 years in Castro's jails, calls claims of political and economic reform there "fraud."

Mr. Antúnez describes opposition to the regime as widespread and growing. It is not more visible, he says, because the "culture of fear" remains intense. Independent reports from the island say that detentions and violent assaults on opposition groups have been increasing.

As in Russia, Cuba can no longer rely on the armed forces to control government critics. They are busy running lucrative businesses in tourism, retail, cigar manufacturing and air travel. The Castros also seem to have a Putin-style relationship with the Church. Pope Benedict met with the Castros during his 2012 visit to the island while dissidents were carted off to jail for asking to see the pontiff.

Mr. Antúnez says that allowing Cubans to run microenterprises isn't reducing poverty. Perhaps that's because when entrepreneurs have succeeded during prior so-called liberalization periods, the regime has accused them of the crime of illicit enrichment.

Foreign investors sometimes don't seem to fare much better. In an Aug. 13 letter to the Economist magazine, British businessman Stephen Purvis, a former business partner of the regime, described the circumstances surrounding his incarceration in a Cuban jail for 15 months between 2011 and 2012.

Mr. Purvis says he was "accused of many things, starting with revelations of state secrets" but was eventually sentenced for "breaches of financial regulations," even though Cuba's central bank had "specifically approved the transactions in question for 12 years."

He was in prison with "a handful" of other foreign businessmen and says "there are many more in the system than is widely known." A few are charged with corruption, he wrote, but many face charges of "sabotage, damage to the economy, tax avoidance and illegal economic activity."

What he didn't see in prison were his island business peers from Brazil, Venezuela and China. Mr. Purvis asks: "Why is the representative of Ericsson in jail for exactly the same activities as [its] Chinese competitor who is not?" Foreigners doing business in Russia have described a similarly risky playing field.

In May, Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas, who claims to have contact with a number of Cuban military officers from his high school days, told the Miami Herald that they are studying "putinismo" in order to prepare for a transition. "They don't want to suffer the same fate as the followers of [Libya's] Kaddafi," he said.

The Putin model may be the way to avoid that fate. But it's a far cry from a plan to liberate the nation.

McCain baffles Russian communists promising to respond to Putin's op-ed in Pravda

US Republican Senator John McCain (AFP Photo)
US Senator John McCain plans to write a column for a Russian newspaper Pravda in response to President Vladimir Putin’s opinion piece on Syria in The New York Times that outraged some members of the American Congress.
The announcement was made on Friday by Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the senior Republican senator known to be one of the fiercest Kremlin critics.
This comes shortly after the US daily published Putin’s op-ed, in which he criticized Washington for the tendency to rely “solely on brute force” in their foreign policy.
It is alarming that military intervention in internal conflicts in foreign countries has become commonplace for the United States,” the Russian president said in his open letter to the American people. Putin also warned that a strike against Syria “would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism.”
The publication triggered a tough response from the White House as well as from top US lawmakers.  Senator McCain described Putin’s piece as “an insult to the intelligence of every American.” In an interview with CNN on Thursday, he joked that he would “love to have a commentary in Pravda.”
Foreign Policy magazine sent the transcript of McCain’s interview to the Russian news outlet, Pravda.ru, and got their agreement to publish the Arizona Republican’s op-ed.
Mr. McCain has been an active anti-Russian politician for many years already,” said Dmitry Sudakov, the English editor of Pravda.ru, as cited by the Foreign Policy’s blog, The Cable. “We have been critical of his stance on Russia and international politics in our materials, but we would be only pleased to publish a story penned by such a prominent politician as John McCain.
Sudakov said that he is convinced that he would not agree on many things that the American politician would have to say in his column, but his article would “obviously be published in English” and then also translated into Russian.
When The Cable reached the Senator’s office with the news, McCain’s spokesman said that he “would be glad to write something for Pravda, so we'll be reaching out to Dmitry with a submission.” According to spokesman Rogers, McCain would most likely want to address such issues as democracy and human rights in Russia, “and certainly Putin’s regime aiding and abetting of the Syrian regime, which has killed 100,000 of its own people.”

Communists: 'Ok, if McCain fits our Syria line'

The news stirred a bit of controversy in the Russian media since it was not immediately clear which Pravda newspaper McCain was going to write for – the post-Soviet edition of Pravda newspaper or the on-line news outlet Pravda.ru that The Cable actually contacted.
Back in the Soviet times there was only one newspaper called Pravda (or ‘The Truth’), which was established in 1912. After the 1917 Bolshevik revolution and until the collapse of the USSR it remained the country’s most influential daily.
Since the mid 1990s, the successor of that Pravda has belonged to the Russian Communist Party (the KPRF).  The Pravda, published in Russian, is the official organ of the party and is led by Communist MP Boris Komotsky.

Some journalists from the USSR-era Pravda paper migrated to an online news outlet which was established in 1999 as Pravda On-Line and then rebranded Pravda.ru in 2003. This Pravda does have an English version.
The Communist daily was pretty surprised to know from the reports in the press that “they agreed” to post McCain’s op-ed.
Once I learned about that, I started worrying: how should we pay him – in roubles of dollars?” Pravda newspaper editor-in-chief Komotsky said, as cited by Itar-Tass. “Then I thought maybe McCain is in talks with some ‘Oklahoma city Pravda’,” he said.
Gennady Zyuganov, the leader of the KPRF, said that if the newspaper does get a proposal from McCain “we will be ready to consider it, but only if his opinion does not contradict the Communist Party’s position on the war in Syria,” the party’s website quotes.
He reiterated the KPRF’s view that there is a war “between the legal Syrian government which is supported by the people and gangs of international terrorists supported from abroad.” The main objective of this “special operation” is the overthrow of the government in order to gain control over the country’s resources to exploit them, Zyuganov said, adding that the same was true of the wars in Libya and Iraq.
The US is attempting to eliminate our last ally in the Middle East – Syria. And McCain is one of the most predatory hawks urging direct aggression [against Syria]," the Communist leader believes.
It is still not clear which of the two Pravda news outlets McCain actually kept in mind when making his comment to CNN.
However, according to The Cable, he will now write his column for Pravda.ru and the piece is expected to be submitted by Wednesday next week.
We will have Senator McCain’s op-ed translated into Russian so that we can be certain of the accuracy of translation,” Rogers is cited as saying.

Inside the Mind of Vladimir Putin

Yeah, I’ll admit that I’m disappointed that Obama canceled the summit with me next month.  Oh well. Still, giving Snowden asylum is a big political winner for me at home, and that’s that.
Yeah, I’m a dictator and everything, but it always helps to have a strong base of support--and flipping the bird to the Americans is a great way to get the average Ivan to say, “Way to go!  That’ll stick it to Uncle Sam!”
Besides, even if Obama says he won’t hold the summit, our foreign and defense ministers are still going forward with their meeting this coming Friday.  The Americans, you see, are still eager to make progress on Syria--well, a nyet to that. We’re helping Assad in Damascus because we want him to win. The Americans--well, they don’t know what they want. They kinda sorta want the Sunni rebels to win, but of course, they want those same rebels to “respect human rights.”
And what the US really wants is some sort of “negotiated settlement.” I guess that’s so the State Department can have something to do. Yup, another “peace conference” where the diplomats all get to dress nicely and talk and talk and talk--and put everyone to sleep.
What dopes they are. The Americans need to understand: When you’re fighting a war, you fight to win, period. If the Americans are seeking “peace” and if we are seeking victory--well, the side with the clearer objectives wins.
Now okay, things could change. Let’s just suppose that the Saudis bribe me into abandoning Assad. Yes, that would be fine. Assad might be my guy, but nations don’t have permanent allies, they only have permanent interests. And my interest is Russia--and me.
(As an aside, you might be wondering why I’m being so candid, but hey, I’m not worried.  Americans are so oblivious to foreign affairs these days, I can say whatever I want, and get away with it.)
Back to my dealings with the Obama administration.  If I simply tell my guys--Lavrov at the foreign ministry and Shoigu at defense--that they should show a little leg on some issue that the Americans really care about, like gay rights or global warming or arms control, well, I’ll soon enough have Obama eating out of my hand, again.
So we can promise to review, say, the new anti-gay rights rules we’ve enacted.  I’ll probably have to do that, anyway, so that the Sochi Olympics come off without a hitch next year. But if I say I’m doing it because John Kerry asked me too--that’ll send a thrill up the Americans’ leg.
Or maybe we’ll say that we agree on the need to do something about the climate--as long as the Americans go first. But if we merely say we need to do something, Obama’s core supporters around the world will adore him further--heck, they might even give him another Nobel Peace Prize.
I can always change my mind later, anyway. I mean, we Russians want more hydrocarbon use. Not only is oil our number one economic product, but have you ever been to Siberia? Let that frozen place warm up five or ten degrees, and it’ll be another Iowa--fertile and hospitable.  Sounds good to me, even if Beverly Hills billionaires don’t like it.
Then there’s another issue that I can dangle in front of the Americans: arms control. That’s been an obsession of the American establishment for decades, an obsession that Obama reaffirmed in June. Look, it’s fine with me if the Americans want to disarm. I just don’t think my country should. And we won’t.
Remember, Russia was built on iron and blood. The Americans don’t understand that. They had an easy time conquering a mostly empty frontier, inhabited only by disorganized savages.  Well, we did the exact same thing in Siberia. Yet at the same time, we were fending off invasions from serious enemies with real armies--Magyars, Mongols, Poles, Swedes, Napoleon, and Hitler. In the end, we won against all of them, but not without great cost. Those wars made us what we are today. Americans have no idea.
Indeed, the Americans sit there, atop that wonderful temperate landmass of theirs, thinking that their security and prosperity is the result of their own doing. As somebody once said, people in the U.S. were born on third base and think they hit a triple.  Let the Americans fight a Borodino, or a Stalingrad, and let’s see if they win.   Until then, until they are really tested, I will count the Americans as weak--but lucky. Very lucky. But that luck won’t hold forever.
Speaking of luck, we Russians have had some really bad luck over the past few decades. My predecessors--that publicity hound Gorbachev, that drunken idiot Yeltsin--did their best to suck up to the Americans: they agreed to disarm, they agreed to give up territory--and so they did, in fact, lose almost everything. And that’s why the Soviet Union collapsed. It wasn’t us, it wasn’t the system, it was them--those two blockheads.
I meant it in 2005 when I said that the collapse of the USSR was “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century.”  And, of course, I was just simply saying out loud what every true Russian thinks. That’s why I swear upon Holy Mother Russia that I will spend every day for the rest of my life thinking about how to reclaim the whole territory of the Russian Empire in 1914--basically the same boundaries of the Soviet Union. Come home, Ukraine, Baltics, and all the rest of the former Soviet republics--like it or not.
So you can see, I have a lot of work ahead of me.
Since I have to think long term, I’m not going to be completely mean to the Americans.  I’ll probably give Snowden back one of these days--after we’re done with him. Yes, of course, we had all the stuff on his computers within the first few hours of his arrival at Sheremetyevo, but we need some more time to pull out of his head every last thing he knows. We’re good at that sort of work.
Meanwhile, I’ll have fun with Obama.  He’s just as cynical as me, I see, albeit not as shrewd or smart.   I loved it when he said on Jay Leno the other night, “We don’t have a domestic spying program.”  And what did the media do? Those useful idiots of his? Not much. If Obama get can get away with a whopper like that--if he can lie like a commissar--then he still might be able to be “flexible” in his second term, meaning we’ll make some kind of deal on something. For example, they say that presidential libraries are expensive, in the hundreds of millions of dollars. I’ve got my oligarchs on speed-dial--I can help.
Then there’s Hillary Clinton. Remember that “reset” of Russian-American relations in 2009?  The one where the State Department couldn’t even translate the word “reset” properly?  Did she learn anything from that? Or from the chilling of our diplomacy since? It doesn’t seem that she did. But her lack of a learning curve doesn’t seem to matter to the American voters. Hillary is likely to win the next American presidential election, running simply on domestic feminist identity politics.  Fine with me.
Look, over the long run, I can see that Russian-American relations could chill all the way down to another Cold War. We all know what happened in the 40s and 50s, as the great powers squared off; I’m enough of a student of history to see that friction in the future, too, is inevitable. The difference is, I’m ready--and the Americans aren’t. And I’m in this for the long run.
Here’s how I see the future correlation of forces: Russia will enter Cold War 2.0 in a weaker position than the old USSR, but we have stronger allies.  If I play it right, Russia will be part of a Eurasian alliance with China, and maybe Iran--that’s a good bloc.
Happily, neither Russia nor China are burdened by orthodox communism; folks in Moscow and Beijing gave up, long ago, trying to run the economy based on their reading of old books from Marx or Lenin or Mao. Look, nobody loves Stalin more than me, but in the 60 years since his death, we have come to see that what works best is our leader-driven hybrid of pure communism and pure laissez-faire. Call it “Market Leninism,” call it whatever you want; the idea is that the state will direct the economy toward certain goals, notably, military production. Not everyone is happy, of course, but dictatorship means never having to say you're sorry.
Today, the Americans are moving in a strange direction. When they wake up, years hence, and realize that they are in Cold War 2.0, they will realize that they have outsourced much of their economic strength.  If the Chinese are a future enemy, then it doesn’t make a lot of sense for the Americans to continue to give them their stuff.
Meanwhile, as for the American strength that remains, the environmentalists, in pursuit of their green goals, have been busy trying to shut it all down.
Eventually, they will realize that their political correctness on homeland security was near suicidal--and hopefully, it will be.
Look, I am all in favor, obviously, of domestic surveillance.
But back to the Snowden case for a moment: Suppose the Snowden thing had happened in Russia. That is, a Russian Snowden had fled the country with the top secrets of the Russian equivalent of the NSA.  Now what do you suppose I would have done? Me, with my background in Stalinism? Can you say, “Lubyanka”? I would never say to the Russian equivalent of Gen. Keith Alexander, “Dude, hey, no problem. Better luck next time. Now go mislead Congress some more.”
That’s basically what Obama said to the guy who let Snowden happen--I still trust you, carry on.   Alexander is still on the job, more than two months after the Snowden escapade went public, and there’s no indication that he’s in any kind of trouble.  That’s pathetic on the Americans’ part.  What sort of signal does that send?  To leaders?   To followers?  But again, I’ll take it.
Indeed, as I think about the next Cold War, I can only think of one area in which America is stronger than 60 or 70 years ago. And that is, today, there’s no “fifth column” of ideologically committed communists and fellow travelers inside the US government, as there was back then. Alas, in the future we won’t likely have the benefit of good traitors such as Lauchlin Currie, Ted Hall, the Rosenbergs, or Harry Dexter White.  Or, sigh, that loyal soldier to the end, Lee Harvey Oswald.
Oh well, you can’t have everything. But come to think of it, we will have K Street. Even if we will lack zealots who work for free, we can find lobbyists who work for hire. What was it that Lenin said about the capitalists selling us the rope we need to hang them? I’ve read that Lenin didn’t actually ever say that. Fine, then I’ll say it. I love that kind of free market.
So as I think about things, long term, I am starting to like our chances.  And did I mention that I like Hillary in ’16? She’d be great.

(el-alto-sueño);

le pidieron las piernas

duras y nudosas

¿No me envidias?”.

Has sufrido mucho, hombre, entra, te has ganado el cielo.
