El día en que los cubanos no se enteraron de la hazaña de Pito Abreu

Hoy es un día vergonzoso para la prensa en Cuba. Todos los medios de la isla, sin excepción, han callado uno de los momentos cumbres del deporte  cubano: el cienfueguero José Dariel -Pito- Abreu, primera base de los Medias Blancas de Chicago, ha sido seleccionado Novato del Año de la Liga Americana.

La pelota es uno de los más importantes signos de identidad de los cubanos. Este deporte les sirvió, a finales del siglo XIX, para definirse a sí mismos y defender su derecho a la independencia. Durante toda la primera mitad del siglo XX, los cubanos que militaron en equipos de Grandes Ligas contribuyeron de una manera decisiva a construir la leyenda del béisbol latino.

Pocos meses después del triunfo revolucionario, Fidel Castro decidió suprimir el deporte profesional en Cuba. Esa medida empujó al destierro a decenas de atletas que hoy son parte esencial de la historia del béisbol cubano. Las consecuencias de esa autoritaria medida han llegado hasta nuestros días.

Los peloteros cubanos que desean probar suerte en el mejor béisbol del mundo, antes deben escapar de su país. Eso tuvo que hacer el primera base de Cienfuegos. Apenas un año después, se convirtió en el primer novato de la historia de Grandes Ligas en finalizar la temporada entre los primeros cinco lugares de su liga en jonrones (36), carreras impulsadas (107) y promedio de bateo (317).

Sus cuadrangulares, además, impusieron un récord en los Medias Blancas de Chicago para un novato, rompiendo la marca de 35 que impuso Ron Kittle en 1983. Pito Abreu tiene ahora la sexta mejor marca de jonrones de un novato en la historia de Grandes Ligas.

Justo hoy, en la sección de deportes del periódico Granma, aparece un reportaje sobre cinco basquetbolistas cubanos que hace dos años desertaron. Obviamente, es la historia de un fracaso. Ese es el modus operandi de un régimen mezquino, que se niega a reconocer cualquier logro de los emigrados cubanos en cualquier ámbito.

Ni siquiera Radio Ciudad del Mar, la emisora de Cienfuegos, mencionará el acontecimiento. Pero el futuro se encargará de enmendar esa penosa omisión. Ninguna de las noticias que aparecieron hoy en los periódicos cubanos será más importante que la hazaña de Pito Abreu.

Cuando ya nadie recuerde a ninguno de los que merecieron los titulares del 21 de octubre en Cuba, José Dariel Abreu seguirá siendo un héroe de todos los cubanos. Los signos de identidad no se archivan en una hemeroteca ni se deciden en un cuartel, eso es algo que permanece guardado en el orgullo de la gente.

Contradictions, Misrepresentations and Omissions: The New York Times' Latest Cuba Editorial

Today, The New York Times published another one of its periodic editorials asking President Obama to "End the Embargo on Cuba."

The editorial begins by highlighting President Obama's many foreign policy crises -- or as they put it, "the dismal state of troubled bilateral relations" throughout the world.

Yet ironically, many of these crises (Syria, Russia, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, etc.) have transpired -- or been aggravated -- precisely due to foreign policies that the NYT has long advocated.

Now, as regards Cuba, the NYT claims to really know what it's talking about.

Except, clearly it doesn't.

This latest editorial was primarily penned by Ernesto Londoño [photo], a new young member of the NYT's Editorial Board, who was a fine field reporter in Afghanistan and Iraq, but whose

knowledge of Cuba policy is limited to regurgitating what his "sources" selectively told him this week.

Such inexperience on this topic leads to contradictions, omissions and misrepresentations.

Let's begin with a glaring contradiction.

The editorial itself recognizes that, "in recent years, a devastated economy has forced Cuba to make reforms."

That's right.

So why stop forcing it?

History has proven that Castro only pursues "reforms" out of necessity -- never voluntarily or out of "good-will."

So how exactly would replacing billions in former Soviet and now Venezuelan subsidies, and in plummeting European and Canadian investments, with U.S. trade and investments, further "reforms"?

It wouldn't.

As a matter of fact, many observers argue that the reason why Castro refuses to tackle major reforms is because he's hopeful that the U.S. will lift the embargo and bail-out his regime. This NYT editorial only adds to Castro's (false) sense of hope.

Now let's look at the laundry list of misrepresentations and omissions.

First, the editorial purports that lifting the U.S. embargo would "help a population that has suffered enormously since Washington ended diplomatic relations in 1961."

The Cuban population hasn't suffered enormously "since Washington ended diplomatic relations in 1961." It has "suffered enormously" since Castro installed a repressive, totalitarian dictatorship, which let's not forget -- the NYT's infamous reporter, Herbert Matthews, white-washed for years.

Moreover, it fails to explain how lifting the embargo would actually help the Cuban population.

In the last five decades, every single "foreign trade and investment" transaction with Cuba has been with a state entity, or individual acting on behalf of the state. The state's exclusivity regarding trade and investment was enshrined in Article 18 of Castro's 1976 Constitution.

Thus, how would allowing U.S. companies and tourists to transact business with Castro's monopolies help the Cuban people?

Better yet -- how have the billions in foreign trade and investment that countries throughout the world have conducted with Castro's monopolies benefited the Cuban people?

Needless to say, the NYT editorial eludes this key point.

Instead, it talks about Cuba's "new" foreign investment law.

But omits how it violates international labor law, or the dozens of foreign businessmen who have been arbitrarily imprisoned in recent years and had their companies confiscated by Castro. These include some of Castro's (now former) biggest foreign business partners, e.g. Britan's Coral Capital and Canada's Tokmakjian Group.

It talks about the new Port of Mariel.

But omits the most significant cargo to have gone through this new port: 240 tons of Cuban weapons destined for North Korea, which was found in blatant violation of international sanctions.

(Note that the editorial contains absolutely no mention whatsoever of this major Cuban arms trafficking scandal, despite it being the largest weapons shipment to North Korea ever interdicted and the first time a nation in the Americas was found in violation of international sanctions.)

It minimizes how Cuba's regime "still harasses and detains dissidents."

But omits that political arrests are at historic highs. Already this year, there have been over 7,599 documented political arrests -- quadrupling the year-long tally of 2,074 political arrests in 2010.

It lauds how "in recent years officials have released political prisoners who had been held for years."

But omits any mention of all those who are still serving long prison terms, as well as new political prisoners who have been arrested in recent years and remain arbitrarily imprisoned, e.g. The Ladies in White's Sonia Garro, rapper Angel Yunier Remon, labor leader Ulises Gonzalez Moreno and activist Ivan Fernandez Depestre.

It praises Cuba's "constructive role" in the long and inconclusive Colombian peace negotiations.

But omits how Cuba's regime has effectively undermined Venezuela's democratic institutions; wrested political and operational control of its government; and led direct a campaign of repression that has resulted in the arrest, torture and murder of innocent student protesters

It focuses on the Castro regime preparing for a "post-embargo" Cuba.

But omits any mention of a democratic transition, nor of Cuba's courageous opposition groups, including The Ladies in White, the Cuban Patriotic Union (UNPACU), the National Resistance Front, the Estado de Sats project, or The Emilia Project -- all of whom oppose the U.S. lifting the embargo.

It alleges normalizing diplomatic relations will somehow lead to a "breakthrough" in the case of Alan Gross.

But omits that the Castro regime is holding Gross hostage in order to extort the United States into releasing five (now three) spies convicted in federal courts of targeting military installations and conspiracy to murder three American citizens and a permanent resident of the U.S.

It then discusses the upcoming Summit of the Americas, suggesting Cuba has been "traditionally excluded at the insistence of Washington."

This is a complete misrepresentation.

Cuba remains excluded due to a formal commitment made at the 2001 Quebec Summit that held democracy was an "essential condition" for participation in the Summit. Surely, the U.S. should not take its formal commitments lightly.

And last -- but not least -- it wouldn't be a NYT editorial without mention of its long-standing "generational shift" argument that young Cuban-Americans hold "softer views" regarding relations with Cuba's regime.

Yet, it fails to disclose that the NYT has been pitching this "generational shift" argument since December 5th, 1965, when it first gleefully suggested that:

“The very active anti-Castro groups in Miami have faded into virtual obscurity.”

Then again, on October 10, 1974:

“Virtually all of several dozen Cubans interviewed would like to visit Cuba either to see their relatives or just their country, which they have not seen for 10 years or more; and some segments of the exile community, especially young refugees brought up and educated here, are not interested in the Cuban issues.”

And on March 23, 1975:

“For the first time significant number of exiles are beginning to temper their emotion with hardnosed geopolitical realism.”

And on August 31, 1975:

“A majority of the persons interviewed — especially the young, who make up more than half of the 450,000 exiles here — are looking forward to the time when it will be possible for them to travel to Cuba. Even businessmen, who represent a more conservative group than the young, are thinking about trading with Cuba once the embargo is totally lifted.”

And on July 4, 1976:

“A new generation of professionals between 25 and 35 years of age has replaced the older exile leadership.”

Et al.

So much for credibility.

CNN's Jay Carney Was White House Spokesman During Alleged Prostitution Cover Up

At the time, during President Obama's 2012 reelection campaign, former White House Press Secretary and current CNN employee Jay Carney repeatedly told the White House Press Corps that no one in the administration was involved in or was being investigated for a Colombian prostitution scandal that ripped through the Secret Service. The Washington Post now says that wasn't true.

The Post's front page Thursday morning bombshell puts CNN in a unique position. While the Post claims "aides" knew the truth, no one is claiming Carney knowingly lied. Regardless, Carney's knowledge of who told him what and when gives the cable news network a front row seat at a breaking national scandal.

The Washington Post details three different occasions when Carney told the Press Corps what the Post's own reporting now says was not true:

 Also on April 20, a Friday, reporters asked press secretary Jay Carney whether White House staffers had been involved. He said his information was that the incident did not “involve anything but the agents and the military personnel.” …

The following Monday, in response to questions from reporters, Carney said that “there have been no specific, credible allegations of misconduct by anyone on the White House advance team or the White House staff.”

Carney added that, “out of due diligence, the White House counsel’s office has conducted a review of the White House advance team and . . . came to the conclusion that there’s no indication that any member of the White House advance team engaged in any improper conduct or behavior.”

The Post's online article includes video of Carney.

Thus far, throughout Obama's presidency, like the rest of the mainstream media, CNN has protected the Obama Administration from numerous scandals. Through indifference, the former-Most Trusted Name In News has only aided and abetted the White House's Benghazi, IRS, and Fast and Furious lies.

With Carney in its stable, CNN has an opportunity no one else in the media does to break this scandal open even further.

Telesur English reported a protest in Havana earlier this week drew “thousands” demanding the release of the three remaining Wasp Network spies serving prison sentences in the United States. The demonstrators (largely students) rallied under the marketing savvy theme, “I am Cuba.” The dismal protest followed Havana’s disappointing hemispheric call for Cuban 5 support, which was answered by just 32 Latin American parliamentarians from 14 nations.

It wasn’t so long ago that the Castro regime could produce a carefully-choreographed “spontaneous” protest of 100,000 people in an hour. Now it’s a struggle to get a few thousand demonstrators to show support for one of Havana’s major propaganda themes. Another sign of the slow, steady decline of the government’s influence…...

La ultima desverguenza de la CNN: La Habana en la lista de las diez ciudades más saludables del mundo

La cadena CNN ha elaborado una lista de las diez ciudades más saludables del mundo, en la que ha incluido nueve urbes del mundo desarrollado, (Copenhague, Okinawa, Montecarlo, Vancouver, Melbourne, Nueva York, Jonkoping (Suecia), Singapur y Napa (California).  Sólo una ciudad del mundo en vías de desarrollo integró la selecta lista: La Habana, Cuba.

El servicio noticioso estadounidense explica que en esta élite ha incluido a “ciudades que facilitan a sus residentes adoptar un estilo de vida saludable, bien sea por ofrecerles una buena atención a la salud, por alentar la medicina preventiva, o por reducir la contaminación del aire”.

Hay otras consideraciones, como la atención a los ancianos, las leyes contra el hábito de fumar y la felicidad (en Copenhague, Dinamarca, son más que felices: sólo el 2% trabaja 40 horas a la semana)

“Estas ciudades encabezan nuestra lista porque brillan en una o más áreas de la salud," precisa el texto introductorio de CNN.

La Habana fue escogida por alentar la medicina preventiva, uno de los puntos que engloba la atención primaria a la salud (también comprende acciones de diagnóstico, curación y rehabilitación, a nivel primario y local).

La selección de la capital cubana resultaba tan insólita que CNN puso la venda antes que la herida, en el primer párrafo de su explicación (“puede parecer improbable, pero…”) y aclaró que sabe que “en gran parte del resto de Cuba hay una miseria supina”. Entonces, ¿qué fue lo que de La Habana  llamó la atención a los enviados de la cadena, Sanjay Gupta y Matt Sloane?

La respuesta a esa pregunta son dos índices que el gobierno cubano suele enarbolar en su empedernida y unilateral "batalla de ideas", por ser numéricamente comparables o superiores a los valores respectivos en EE.UU.:  esperanza de vida (77 años en ambos casos) y mortalidad infantil (5,3 por cada 1000 nacidos vivos en Cuba; 6 en EE.UU). CNN se maravilló de cómo en la isla se alcanzan esas cifras con una fracción de lo que destina por habitante EE.UU. ($400 en Cuba, $9.000 en EE.UU.)

El filósofo austríaco Alexius Meinong (1853 – 1920) sostuvo en su obra seminal Über Annahmen (1902) que referirse verbalmente o por escrito a una cosa concede ya cierto ser, aunque tal cosa no exista, por ejemplo: el círculo cuadrable. Para describir este avatar del ser, Meinong acuñó el término Sosein, que del alemán al español significa más o menos que como las cosas son así, así son.

La jerga filosófica usa Dasein [ser ahí] para la existencia y el filósofo inglés William Kneale (1906 – 90) concluyó en Probability and Induction (1949) que Meinong había formado una jungla de subsistencias. De este modo puso en circulación otro vocablo jergoso: Meinong’s jungle, que cobija innumerables cubicherías aunque la palabra jungla no aparezca ni una sola vez en las obras incompletas de José Martí.

A estas alturas del partido entre las banderías del problema cubano, los Soseins del castrismo —desde los ojos que le sacaron a Abel Santamaría hasta los oficiales de inteligencia que se infiltran en otro Estado, pero no son espías— han perdido casi toda relevancia, porque machacar con ellos por más de medio siglo no ha servido para nada en el enfrentamiento al Dasein castrista.

Más bien habría que discernir entre las cosas del anticastrismo que son pura Sosein y las otras que podrían cristalizar como Dasein, porque “vivimos tiempos cruciales [y] si en algo estamos todos de acuerdo es que el país está al borde del abismo”. NUEVA YORK — Cuando me enteré de que Leo Brouwer había invitado al cantante Pancho Céspedes a abrir su festival de Septiembre próximo en (lo que queda de) La Habana, me reía solo imaginándome la inauguración de un festival básicamente de música de cámara cantando “La Vida Loca”, que suena tan absurdo como llevar a Brouwer  a una feria de cumbias en Manizales. Pero como todos conocemos del narcisismo profesoral de Leo, y de su eterno afán por congraciarse con los jerarcas reclutando adeptos, “tontos útiles” y participantes gratuitos de los bandos más variopintos, no hay nada de que sorprenderse.

Disfrazado de un apoliticismo falso e hipócrita, Leo, Pancho –y todos– saben de sobra que cada artista nacional o foráneo de más o menos prestigio que se presente en la arruinada Isla, su imagen será siempre usada para dar credibilidad al decrépito régimen castrista. Por otra parte, sabemos también de primera mano lo fácil que es estimular la vanidad y el ego desmedido de los artistas, por lo que no es de extrañarse que Céspedes, como dijo, “se sienta muy halagado, creo que como nunca, en ese sentido de que una persona como Leo Brouwer me dé la oportunidad de abrir un festival que lleva su nombre.”  Una persona –agregaría yo– que ha puesto todas sus relaciones alrededor del mundo al servicio de un sistema caduco, cruel y tiránico que no ha producido más que exilio, estancamiento, terror, familias divididas, presidio, hambre, dolor y muerte através de 55 años de la dictadura más larga y ridícula del hemisferio.

Tampoco me extraña que Pancho opine (tiene todo su derecho a hacerlo) que “en la Isla hay un cambio para bien, porque – según sus propias palabras –, se le está dando mayor opción a la gente para resolver sus problemas y la oportunidad de tener sus propiedades y negocios”. Parece que para Céspedes, vender tu propio “ascomóvil”, rentar a extranjeros un cuartucho de tu propia casa (“propia” entre comillas, claro), poner una fonda que sirva lo que el estado te permita o abrir un timbiriche de rellenar fosforereas irrellenables o matar piojos a domicilio es un símbolo inequívoco de progreso socioeconómico. “Gracias Raúl”, debió haber añadido. Y yo no lo culpo, pues no hay que olvidarse que Pancho, aunque haga 20 años que cambió los chícharos pelaos por los tacos al pastor, es un producto típico de aquella bazofia de ideología, por lo que no puede, o no quiere darse cuenta de que entre otros muchos atracos de estado, cada teatro en que se presente, hotel donde se hospede o restaurant donde coma, ha sido de alguna forma, una propiedad más, robada a sus legístimos dueños y sus familias sin ningún tipo de retribución.

Quiero antes de terminar, dejar claro que esta nota no constituye en absoluto un acto hostíl contra Francisco Céspedes, sino solo una forma de rebatir pacífica y civilizadamente sus desacertados comentarios, sobre todo el último: En Miami, contrariamente a lo que afirma usted, no solamente “hay muchos extremistas que siguen un pensamiento muy viejo a nivel político”, sino más bien existe y resiste mucha gente brava, digna y hasta profética, adelantados a su época; tanto así, que mientras a usted le enseñaban en la escuela –y quizás hasta en la casa – a ser como el Che y a despreciar, vigilar y humillar a los “gusanos” desde el CDR del barrio, ya hacía ratón y queso que ellos estaban presos, muertos o por cientos de miles diseminados por el mundo, exactamente como usted y yo ahora. Y eso, señor Céspedes, pienso yo, no es ni mas ni menos que ¡visión de futuro!

Maybe it’s just a coincidence that somebody like Jesse Ventura is also a major fan of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara? (Or claims to be for the publicity value among the “hip”?)

Recalling his visit to Cuba and meeting with Fidel Castro in 2002 Ventura grew misty-eyed: “Fidel Castro looked into my eyes and told me I was a man of great courage…Maybe he (Castro) saw a little of him in me.”

Recall the Cowardly Lion’s reaction when the Wizard grants him “the NERVE.” Well, Jesse Ventura’s moronic gloating outdoes even the lion’s (“Shucks, folks, I’m speechless..ha-ha…Ain’t it the truth! Ain’t it the truth!”)

And this imbecile and buffoon (or is it master fraud and expert showman?) was elected governor of a populous and prosperous state, and honored by Harvard University with the title of  “Visiting Fellow,” to say nothing of his career as media host  and author.

“And I’ll tell you another thing that shows me a little bit more about Castro” also revealed Ventura in an interview. “The main downtown building in Havana has this huge flat wall and it has got a huge portrait on it. It’s not Castro. It’s Che Guevara. The biggest photograph in downtown Havana was a mural on a wall of Che. Now if Castro was such an egomaniac and all this, wouldn’t he put himself up there instead of Che?”

For a man with Ventura’s (mostly self-) vaunted “street smarts,” Fidel Castro’s blandishments of (the conveniently dead) Che Guevara should be a cinch to plumb. Didn’t Don Barzini send the biggest and fanciest flowers to Don Corleone’s funeral?

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported how on his Cuba visit Ventura spoke at the University of Havana where he “exhorted students to dream big and work hard to achieve success!” Here one blinks, looks again—and gapes. You long to believe otherwise, you grope for an extenuation, you hope you misread—but it’s inescapable: A man elected as governor of a populous and prosperous U.S. State (and a “Harvard Visiting Fellow”) cannot distinguish between the subjects of a Stalinist police state and the attendees of an AmWay convention.

Ask anyone familiar with Communism. To achieve “success” in such as Castro’s Stalinist fiefdom, you join the Communist Party, you pucker up and stoop down behind Fidel and his toadies and smooch away. (Either that or jump on a raft.)

So come to think of it, Jesse Ventura indeed had much to teach those Havana U. students. On his Cuba visit he performed brilliantly.

Years later when, during an interview, The Daily Caller’s Jaime Weinstein suggested to Ventura that Castro runs a very inhumane dictatorship, a “shocked” (or expertly performing?) Ventura gasped:  “They have the highest health care of any Latin American country! … What has he (Fidel Castro) done that’s inhumane?”

For the benefit of the esteemed academics who granted Ventura’s “Visiting Fellowship” at  Harvard University’s  John F. Kennedy School of Government  here’s a few fully- documented  items that might address their esteemed “Visiting Fellow’s” question:

Fidel Castro’s regime jailed and tortured political prisoners at a higher rate than Stalin’s during the Great Terror, murdered more Cubans in its first three years in power than Hitler’s murdered Germans during its first six and came closest of anyone in history to starting a worldwide Nuclear war. In the above process Fidel Castro and Che Guevara converted a nation with a higher per-capita income than half of Europe and a huge influx of immigrants into one that repels Haitians and boasts the highest suicide rate in the Western Hemisphere.

“What has Cuba ever done to us?!” the again “shocked” (or masterfully miming?) “Harvard Visiting Fellow” gasped recently on his show On the Grid. “We’ve been practicing terrorism against them!”

“War against the United States is my true destiny,” Fidel Castro had confided in a letter to a friend in 1958. “When this war’s over I’ll start that much bigger war.”

“Of course I knew the missiles were nuclear- armed,” responded Fidel Castro to Robert McNamara during a meeting in 1992. “That’s precisely why I urged Khrushchev to launch them!”

But for the purposes of this discussion let’s overlook the above trivialities, as they’re obviously regarded by Harvard’s esteemed academics. Instead let’s focus on the fact that Jesse Ventura claims some sort of “fellowship” with American servicemen, especially Viet-Nam veterans. (Granted, this fellowship is–to put it mildly—not fully reciprocated.)

So again, for the benefit of the esteemed academics who granted Ventura’s “Visiting Fellowship” at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, we’ll  mention a few items to highlight their “Visiting Fellow’s” ignorance (or expert burlesque?) To wit:

In 1967 Fidel Castro sent several of his regime’s most promising sadists to North Vietnamese prison camps to instruct the Vietnamese reds in finer points of their profession. Testimony during Congressional hearings titled, “The Cuban Torture Program; Torture of American Prisoners by Cuban Agents” held on November 1999 provide some of the harrowing details.

The communists titled their torture program “the Cuba Project,” and it took place during 67-68 primarily at the Cu Loc POW camp (also known as “The Zoo”) on the southwestern edge of Hanoi. In brief, this “Cuba Project” was a Joseph Mengelese experiment run by Castroite Cubans to determine how much physical and psychological agony a human can endure before cracking.

The North Vietnamese—please note!–never, ever asked the Castroites for advice on combat. They knew better. Unlike director Steven Soderbergh, they saw through the whole “Che as Guerrilla” hoopla for what it was and is: a Castroite hoax to camouflage the Inspector Clousseau-like bumblings of an incurable military idiot–and more specifically, Castro’s own hand in the idiot’s offing.

No, the North Vietnamese sought Castroite tutelage only on torture of the defenseless, well aware of the Castroites expertise in this matter.

For their experiment the Castroites chose twenty American POWs. One died: Lieutenant Colonel Earl Cobeil, an Air Force F-105 pilot. His death came slowly, in agonizing stages, under torture. Upon learning his Castroite Cuban affiliation, the American POWs nicknamed Cobeil’s Cuban torturer, “Fidel.”

“The difference between the Vietnamese and “Fidel’ was that once the Vietnamese got what they wanted they let up, at least for a while,” testified fellow POW Captain Ray Vohden USN. “Not so with the Cubans. Earl Cobeil had resisted ‘Fidel’ to the maximum. I heard the thud of the belt falling on Cobeil’s body again and again, as Fidel screamed “you son of a beech! I will show you! Kneel down!–KNEEL DOWN!” The Cubans unmercifully beat a mentally defenseless, sick American naval pilot to death.”

“Earl Cobeil was a complete physical disaster when we saw him,” testified another fellow POW, Col. Jack Bomar. “He had been tortured for days and days and days. His hands were almost severed from the manacles. He had bamboo in his shins. All kinds of welts up and down all over; his face was bloody. Then ‘Fidel’ began to beat him with a fan belt.”

According to the book Honor Bound the tortures of U.S. POWs by Castro’s agents were “the worst sieges of torture any American withstood in Hanoi.”

Por tal que nadie olvide su irrelevancia actual, Fidel Castro recurre a cualquier cosa. Desde creer que tiene la solución mágica para alimentar al mundo hasta justificar un genocidio “execrable” para agradecer la condonación de una deuda impagable.

He utilizado la palabra “execrable”, la misma que utilizó Fidel Castro en octubre de 1976, entonces con absoluta razón, para calificar el criminal atentado contra el vuelo 455 de Cubana de Aviación sobre el mar Caribe, que costó la vida a 73 personas. Execrable derribar en pleno vuelo un avión de Cubana de Aviación en 1976. Execrable hacerlo en 2011 con un avión de Malaysia Airlines, que costó la vida a 298 personas. Execrable derribar en 1983 al vuelo 007 de Korean Airlines sobre la Unión Soviética, donde murieron 269 personas. Execrable colocar la bomba que en 1988 derribó el vuelo 103 de Pan American sobre Escocia y provocó la muerte de 270 personas.

No puede ser “execrable” en unos casos sí y otros no. Los “revolucionarios” que hablen de dialéctica. Yo hablo de absoluta desvergüenza. No hay terroristas buenos y terroristas malos. Hay terroristas, genocidas, asesinos, criminales. Así de sencillo.

¿Cómo explicar la declaración de Fidel Castro de que el avión fue derribado “mientras volaba sobre el territorio de Ucrania, por la ruta bajo el control del gobierno belicista del rey del chocolate, Petro Poroshenko”? Lo de siempre: pretende desacreditar al adversario al llamarle “el rey del chocolate”. ¿Y Fidel Castro qué es? ¿El rey del marabú o el rey de la moringa?

Todavía se cree que él es “Cuba”. Cuando aun se investiga la tragedia, tuvo la procacidad de escribir: “Cuba (…) no puede dejar de expresar su repudio por la acción de semejante gobierno antirruso, antiucraniano y proimperialista”.

Sin salir de Punto Cero, solamente con noticias y papeles, sabe más que investigadores sobre el terreno y los más sofisticados sistemas de inteligencia de los países más desarrollados. Y acusa directamente a Ucrania, sin la más mínima evidencia. Dice lo que ni Putin ni sus “rebeldes” en territorio ucraniano se han atrevido a decir.

En medio de su delirio, salta al conflicto israelí-palestino, acusa a Israel y a Obama, y proclama: “conozco que un combatiente dispuesto a morir puede defender hasta las ruinas de un edificio mientras tenga su fusil, como demostraron los heroicos defensores de Stalingrado”. Lo conocerá porque lo ha leído o ha visto imágenes, porque su actuación personal como combatiente nunca fue precisamente así, sino todo lo contrario.

Y falsifica históricamente al referirse a los palestinos: “Deseo solo hacer constar mi solidaridad con el heroico pueblo que defiende el último jirón de lo que fue su patria durante miles de años”. Falso. El “pueblo palestino” y la “patria palestina” los inventó en 1967 el terrorista y corrupto Yasser Arafat. ¿Y los judíos qué? ¿Está al corriente Fidel Castro que el calendario judío va por el año 5.774? ¿Está al tanto que al comenzar la era cristiana ya los judíos contabilizaban 3.760 años de historia, sin que un solo “palestino” hubiera aparecido por algún lugar? ¿Que cuándo comenzó la expansión árabe por el mundo hace catorce siglos el calendario judío marcaba el año 4.392?

Sé perfectamente que este artículo recibirá virulentos ataques, más de los habituales. Además de los miserables al servicio del régimen, que a falta de argumentos intentan descaracterizar a quien escribe y expresa sus ideas en un país libre, se sumarán aquellos infelices, no pocos, que aunque no vivan en Cuba llevan en su alma un pequeñito Fidel Castro y les duele que señalen alguna veleidad del invencible comandante de los mil fracasos, al que identifican y confunden con “Cuba”, “los cubanos”, “la patria”, “el pueblo”, “la revolución”, y “el socialismo”.

Pretenderán también, como siempre, desviar los comentarios a temas que no tengan nada que ver con lo que se analiza: es su estilo, especializados en denigrar y acusar, odiar y envidiar, incapaces de crear riquezas, proponer ideas nuevas, resolver problemas, mostrar logros. Siempre tan repetitivos, sosos y aburridos como un discurso de Machado Ventura.

Curiosamente, nunca un “revolucionario” ha logrado ser “rey del chocolate” ni de nada positivo. Siempre reyes absolutos de la bobería, la mentira, la idiotez y la desvergüenza.

Condenemos la execrable provocación insólita. No la que pretende Fidel Castro acusando al democráticamente electo presidente de Ucrania, sin disponer de una sola prueba, de ser culpable del derribo de un avión civil sobre territorio ucraniano.

Condenemos inequívocamente el execrable intento de mentir para justificar a genocidas y criminales y defender mezquinos intereses de dictaduras sin futuro.

Que es lo que está haciendo Fidel Castro en este asunto.

Una conducta verdaderamente execrable.

Should American Taxpayers Fund Cuba’s Media?

Recently, National Public Radio (lavished with over $4 billion by U.S. taxpayers over the past decade) ran a week-long “special series” on – and from – Cuba. Such was its propaganda value for the Fidel Castro regime that Cuba’s own KGB-founded and mentored media gleefully ran some of the programs – in their pristinely unedited form.

Given totalitarian media practices that’s quite a “compliment” to NPR’s producers. To wit:

“Everything within the Revolution, nothing outside of it.” (Castro speech, June, 1961.)

“Everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state.” (Benito Mussolini, Doctrine of Fascism, 1932.)

In his famous speech on June 16, 1961 Castro – whose KGB-designed jails and torture chambers at the time incarcerated one of every 19 Cubans for political “crimes” – was warning the rest of his subjects how they might stay out of them. He set the barbed-wire and machine-gun guarded boundaries of “artistic freedom.” If your prose, poetry, films, or journalism served the purposes of the totalitarian regime (i.e. if you succumbed to lackeyism) you might remain outside of such enclosures. Otherwise?

As usual, as seen above, even with this declaration Castro was stealing – from his hero Mussolini this time. Earlier he also stole from his hero Adolf Hitler.

“Condemn me, it doesn’t matter,” declared Castro during the 1953 trial for his failed Moncada putsch. “History will absolve me.”

“You may pronounce me guilty,” declared Hitler during the 1924 trial for his failed Rathaus putsch. “But the eternal court of history will absolve me.”

Over the decades NPR and Public Broadcasting Service (NPR’s parent taxpayer-subsidized company) have run literally dozens of pieces on Nelson Mandela. So many in fact that an innocent bystander could easily conclude that the plight of “political” prisoners (especially black ones) greatly concerns NPR.

But all of NPR’s “reporting” from Cuba proves otherwise.

While NPR conducted canned interviews with KGB-trained Communist apparatchiks in Cuba last week, many Cubans (male and female, black and white) suffered in KGB-designed jail-cells for such crimes as quoting Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi. In fact, NPR’s (lily-white) Cuban hosts hold the distinction of jailing and torturing the most black political prisoners in the modern history of the Western Hemisphere – many more than the Vorster and Botha regimes jailed in South Africa.

And unlike Mandela, these Cuban freedom-fighters were jailed either after secret Stalinist trials or after no trial whatsoever. This Castro practice, best we can tell, does not seem to offend NPR. None of the Cuban political prisoners were so much as mentioned during the week-long PBS series. One of these, a black Cuban dissident named Sonia Garro, has spent the last three years in a KGB-designed dungeon without even being charged. This peaceful (but anti-communist) lady was beaten, arrested – and beaten again – for the crime of carrying flowers in a peaceful religious demonstration honoring other peaceful Cuban blacks murdered earlier by Castro’s firing squads.

Think about it for a second, amigos: Here’s a savagely victimized person who qualifies as black and Hispanic and female – and is being tortured by a lily-white all-male military regime 90 miles from U.S. shores. Here’s racism! Here’s sexism! Here’s a brutal and full-fledged military dictatorship propped up by greedy billionaires committing these horrors daily!

And here’s utter silence by the mainstream media.

Who else in modern history could conceivably get away with anything even approaching this level of sexist, racist oppression and cruelty without a peep of protest from U.S. media and civil rights “leaders?”

Oops! Forgive me. You see I’m implying that the U.S. media and U.S. civil rights “leaders” merely ignore the jailing and torture en masse of Cubans. This is wrong. Actually many of these fine folks go out of their way to glorify the jailer and torturer:

“Fidel Castro is one hell of a guy! You people would like him!” – Ted Turner

“Fidel Castro is old-fashioned, courtly – even paternal, a thoroughly fascinating figure!” – Andrea Mitchell

“Viva Fidel! Viva Che!” – Jesse Jackson

“It was quite a moment to behold! Fidel Castro was very engaging and very energetic!” – Congressional Black Caucus member Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Cali.)

“He’s one of the most amazing human beings I’ve ever met!” Congressional Black Caucus member Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.)

The June 24 NPR infomercial on Castro’s fiefdom featured a hard hitting interview with Castro official Josefina Vidal, during which NPR’s David Greene unearths such scoops as: The U.S. embargo of Cuba is very wicked. Raul Castro is an earnest reformer and all around swell fellow. And don’t even get us started on his swell big brother Fidel!

Here’s how NPR introduces their gracious Cuban interviewees: “Josephina Vidal is director of U.S. relations for the Cuban government.”

In fact, Vidal is a KGB-trained Cuban agent who was expelled from the U.S. along with 13 other Cuban agents in June 2003 for espionage. Look carefully at the date of Vidal’s expulsion from U.S. shores. Castro’s agents (including Vidal), you see, were stealing U.S. military secrets and selling them to Saddam Hussein in Iraq. How many Americans died as a result of Vidal’s treachery?

We’ll never know – certainly not from (American-taxpayer bankrolled) NPR, who is too busy feting this KGB-trained spy and proven enemy of America to bother informing the Americans who bankroll their programs about such trivial details.

NPR should be quite proud of themselves.

FIU's Cuba Poll: Manipulations, Omissions and Contradictions

When a poll is more concerned about meeting its sponsor's expectations, than about being thorough and scientific, then manipulations, omissions and contradictions abound.

That's exactly what has happened in the 2014 edition of FIU's Cuba poll, sponsored by the for-profit "progressive" lobbying firm, Trimpa Group, which works to lift the embargo towards Cuba.

In this morning's The Miami Herald, FIU Professor Guillermo Grenier, who led the poll, admitted to manipulating the numbers.

"Grenier acknowledged his numbers reflect only those respondents who said they favored or opposed the embargo and did not include 'don’t know/no answer' replies. Including those numbers in the tally would change the percentages to 45-41 (from the reported 52-48) against the embargo — short of a majority and with 12 percent replying 'don’t know/no answer.'"

That casts even further doubt on all of the poll's numbers.

Why would an academic institution do this? Such manipulations are highly questionable.

“What you’re telling me is unusual. Really unique. Very, very extremely rare," David Hill, a nationally known pollster with Hill Research Consultants in Washington D.C., said about FIU’s method.

The Miami Herald had also first noted that:

"Although only 62 percent of all the Miami-Dade Cubans surveyed by FIU said they were U.S. citizens, 90 percent also reported that they were registered to vote."

Remember -- only U.S. citizens can vote.

Could FIU have been so sloppy?

We can't say for sure, as they purposely don't disclose all of their data.

But let's take a closer look.

Here is the tab for the question: Are you a U.S. Citizen?

Overall, 62% answered YES, while 32% answered NO.

According to the tab's breakdown, 14% of those not registered to vote were U.S. citizens, while 86% were not and 1% did not respond. For a total of 101%!

But then, they have a whole separate tab asking the question: Are you registered to vote?

Overall, 90% answered YES, while 10% answered NO.

Needless to say, those numbers don't mesh.

(It also shows how heavily FIU weighed the poll with non-U.S. citizens and non-voters.)

Similar contradictions are found policy-wise. Here's our favorite:

The poll asks, "do you think people living in the US should be allowed to invest in new non-governmental small businesses in Cuba?"

Overall, 60% said NO, while 40% said YES.

Yet, the poll claims these same Cuban-Americans support lifting the embargo by a 52-48% margin (or 45-41% margin).

In other words, Cuban-Americans purportedly support doing businesses with Castro's monopolies, but not with "cuentapropistas"?

Here's another one:

The poll asks, "the US Department of State [or US Government] includes Cuba on a list of four countries which the US government considers to be State Sponsors of Terrorism. This designation penalizes persons and organizations engaging in certain activities with Cuba and the other countries on the list. The other countries on the list are Iran, Sudan and Syria. Do you believe that Cuba should be kept on that list of penalized countries that support terrorism, or be taken off the list?"

Overall, 63% said YES, while 37% said NO.

Yet, the poll claims these same Cuban-Americans support lifting the embargo by a 52-48% margin (or 45-41% margin).

In other words, Cuban-Americans purportedly want to sanction the Castro regime for supporting terrorism, but do business with its monopolies?

That's rubbish.

This sloppy poll was designed for a sensationalist headline.

FIU should be ashamed of itself.
