DETROIT -- U.S. border agents say they arrested a Cuban immigrant crossing from Windsor, Ontario, after discovering he was wanted for attempted murder in Miami.
Customs and Border Patrol said in a statement Wednesday that Pablo A. Perez-Castellanos was on a bus carrying passengers through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel on Sunday.
The agency says Perez-Castellanos told them he was returning to the U.S. after a three-month visit to Cuba. He's a Cuban citizen with U.S. residency status.
The agency say a check revealed that he had a March 19 felony warrant from Florida accusing him of kidnapping, burglary with assault and battery, attempted premeditated murder and child abuse.
He's being held in the Macomb County jail pending extradition proceedings.
Details of the case leading to the charges weren't immediately known.

Did ‘hardheaded socialism’ make Canada richer than America? Please

Stephen Marche at BloombergView notes that a) the net worth of the average Canadian household in 2011 was $363,202 vs. 319,970 for the average American household, b) Canada’s unemployment rate is a full percentage point lower than America’s, and c) Iceland is thinking about pegging its currency to the loonie rather than the greenback. And then he draws this conclusion:

Since the 1990s, Canada has pursued a hardheaded (even ruthless), fiscally conservative form of socialism. Its originator was Paul Martin, who was finance minister for most of the ’90s, and served a stint as prime minister from 2003 to 2006. Alone among finance ministers in the Group of Eight nations, he “resisted the siren call of deregulation,” in his words, and insisted that the banks tighten their loan-loss and reserve requirements. He also made a courageous decision not to allow Canadian banks to merge, even though their chief executives claimed they would never be globally competitive unless they did. The stability of Canadian banks and the concomitant stability in the housing market provide the clearest explanation for why Canadians are richer than Americans today.
Martin also slashed funding to social programs. He foresaw that crippling deficits imperiled Canada’s education and health-care systems, which even his Conservative predecessor, Brian Mulroney, described as a “sacred trust.” He cut corporate taxes, too. Growth is required to pay for social programs, and social programs that increase opportunity and social integration are the best way to ensure growth over the long term. Social programs and robust capitalism are not, as so many would have you believe, inherently opposed propositions. Both are required for meaningful national prosperity.

Yes, Canada has a nationalized health care system, but overall it ranks as the 6th freest economy in the world, according to the Heritage Foundation’s 2012 Index of Economic Freedom:

The foundations of economic freedom are very strong in Canada, and the economy has emerged from the global economic slowdown relatively unscathed. The rule of law is sustained by an effective and independent court system, ensuring protection of property rights and the equitable application of the commercial code.
Canada also performs well in other pillars of economic freedom and continues to sharpen its long-term competitiveness. The soundness of public finance has been notable, although government spending has been rising as a share of GDP. Along with open-market policies that support trade and dynamic investment, the efficient regulatory environment facilitates entrepreneurial activity and provides a high degree of certainty for business planning. The steady reduction of the standard corporate tax rate over the past three years has also contributed to Canada’s competitiveness.

There is also the fact that Canada has benefited from an energy boom. It’s like one big North Dakota. Still, there seems little doubt that it is a well-run nation. And can get away with a lot if marginal tax rates are low, regulation efficient, debt contained — even a pretty big social welfare state.

Detroit-Windsor Tunnel reopens after bomb threat

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel has reopened after a bomb threat phoned in to Canadian authorities led to the closing of the international crossing for several hours Thursday afternoon.

Cars began entering the tunnel at the U.S. end about 4:30 p.m., and tunnel chief executive Neal Belitsky says traffic resumed from the Canadian end soon after.

Belitsky says nothing was found in searches by video, bomb-sniffing dog and bomb squad personnel.

The bomb threat was made some time after 12:30 p.m. to the duty free shop on a plaza on the tunnel's Windsor side.

Initially, traffic going onto plazas on both sides of the tunnel was halted and diverted from the tunnel.

The underwater tunnel stretches about a mile beneath the Detroit River, which is one of North America's busiest trade crossings.

How Canada broke up with the U.S.

As veteran diplomats and foreign policy specialists trade blows over who is to blame for the crisis in Canada-U.S. relations — How Obama Lost Canada; How Obama Won Canada; Obama Didn’t Lose Canada; Maybe Canada Lost Obama, Ever Think of That? — thoughtful observers on both sides of the border are concerned that important nuances in the debate are being overlooked.

While managing a bilateral relationship is never easy, especially one as complex and multi-faceted as that between Canada and the U.S., sources close to the Canadian government stress that America totally did not break up with Canada, Canada broke up with it first. They point to the Obama administration’s politically motivated decision to block approval of the Keystone XL pipeline extension as an important irritant in the relationship, adding that America has been avoiding Canada in the halls for weeks.

On the other hand, long-time State Department watchers suggest Canada may have erred in focusing its diplomatic efforts too intently on the administration, in a capital in which power is increasingly dispersed, and besides Canada didn’t even look at America in the library even though they were like studying at the same table.

Seeking to downplay tensions, they note that today’s disputes pale in comparison to the controversies that have sometimes roiled relations between the two countries in the past, such as over Vietnam or that thing at the party last year after grad.

Nonetheless, it is clear that on a number of issues there is a gathering sense of grievance on the Canadian side, a feeling that Canada’s concerns are not taken seriously in official Washington. Sources in the department of Foreign Affairs, who did not want to be named because they had English Lit with America right after lunch, cited a long list of perceived slights, from the Buy America provisions in the stimulus bill to the failure to support Canada’s bid for a seat on the Security Council to the lack of recognition of Canada’s contribution to the Afghanistan mission. Would it have killed America, these sources ask, just to call?

In response, Canada has moved to more aggressively assert its interests, for example warning it might cultivate China and other export markets for its crude oil, scaling back its commitment to Afghanistan and changing its Facebook status to “it’s complicated.” Notwithstanding the two countries’ partnership in the North American Free Trade Agreement, it has pursued its own trade agreements with a number of other powers. In bilateral meetings the tone has noticeably cooled. People familiar with the situation say you could see it in their body language — nothing overt, but let’s just say, awkward.  More >>

News guaranteed to shake Canadians off their duffs: Obama covets Canada.

King-of-the-World-Legend-in-his-own-Mind Barack Obama sees Canada not as a Parliamentary Democracy, but as part of his Marxist-inspired empire.

Nine months after Canada’s May 2011 federal election where Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper took 40% of the vote winning 166 seats for his first majority, the same groups that put Obama in the office to which they are hellbent to return him come November 6,  work to overturn the results of the Canadian election. 

The coming battle for the protection of Canadian sovereignty could be called the People’s War against a North American Union on Steroids.

Overturning Canadian democracy is being aided and abetted by the leaders of documented Obama groups,  including Ben Brandzei, a former advocacy director for Moveon.org, as well as Ross McGregor, Director of the Tides Canada Foundation.  And yes, that is the Canadian branch of George Soros’ Tides Foundation. 

Virtually and almost overnight,  Arab Spring has become Canadian Spring.

Glenn Beck boosted Sun Media’s exposé on the attack on Canadian democracy on GBTV last night.

Thanks to the Andrew Breitbarts of Canada at Sun News Network, the stealth attack on Canadian democracy didn’t go down without a shot to Canadian adrenaline: “While the United States presidential election is raging on, several Canadian politicians are complaining about what they call “American-style dirty tricks” up north—specifically, the increasing use of robocalls.  The problem is that many of the politicians complaining about this behavior are themselves working closely with American left-wing groups closely affiliated with the Obama campaign. “What has happened is that the left has imported what they claim they hate…

“This group has an entire campaign to push people to contact Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the other party leaders, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson and William Corbett, the Commissioner of Canada Elections—he’s the lead investigator for any wrongdoing in the election…

“These are high level Americans with deep ties to the left wing of the Democratic Party now trying to overturn Canadian democracy.”

Activists behind the move are claiming that an online petition represents a “grassroots” move of the Canadian people.  Social media has become Socialist media in this Web grassroots petition.

In short, the “grassroots” is the same group of New Democrat Party, Liberals and the Greens who tried to form the coalition to take down the Stephen Harper Government when it was still in its second minority status.

They may sound new on the latest news-bite, but they are the same old-same old.

Canadians who care about sovereignty should know that the NDP, the Liberals and the Greens are now working in tandem with Obama on what boils down to the Fundamental Transformation of Canada.

While Obama and his activists have worked an agenda that will push America into the abyss, the Canadian far left have been working their way out of the nine-month-old tizzy the last federal election left them in. 

The far-left dubbed “Scary” Stephen Harper got his majority leaving the left with no battle ground from which to con Canadian voters.  Well regulated Canadian banks are safe and Canada is one of the few western countries not headed towards certain bankruptcy.

When Obama threw Israel under the bus, Harper took a strong stand to support it, which he continues to the present day.

When Obama turned up his imperious nose at the 30,000-plus job-providing Keystone Pipeline, Harper looked to China as a customer for Canadian oil.

Obama tries to force world-failed Socialism on the USA.  Harper leads Canada from the values of small-c conservatism.

The once preposterous warning that the US would annex Canada is now reality with Obama in the White House.

Meanwhile, there’s no better time than today for Canadians to kickstart the ‘Back Off Baraka’ Campaign.

Keystone pipeline & pump prices

Rising gasoline prices have helped proponents of a controversial pipeline proposal press their case that the project would help ease supply bottlenecks and lower prices for consumers.

They’re half right.

The proposed pipeline would relieve a glut of crude oil backing up in the Midwest and redirect those barrels to Gulf of Mexico ports. From there they could be shipped to world markets and repriced at higher global prices.

But that likely would mean higher prices for drivers in the nation's midsection, who currently are enjoying an unusual discount stemming from a lack of pipeline capacity.  On Monday, TransCanada Corp., the company that wants to build the pipeline, said it would start construction of a southern leg while it tries to satisfy environmental concerns raised by the Obama administration that have blocked the longer northern leg.

Oil prices around the world have been rising steadily since October largely because of tightening sanctions on Iran being imposed by the U.S. and European countries over its suspected development of nuclear weapons.

the U.S. should be seeking to defund the Chávez machine, and there is no better way to do that than with approval of the Keystone XL. The Alberta crude that will travel through the XL is of a similar quality to Venezuelan oil, and the U.S. could begin buying from Canada instead of from Venezuela if a pipeline were put in place. There is one thing that Mr. Lugar and Venezuelans who don’t believe that Chávez has an oil weapon agree on, and that is the Venezuelan dictator’s vulnerability. “Divisions in Venezuela’s Russian-armed military, an inflation rate over 30 percent, a dilapidated oil infrastructure, widespread food and energy shortages, and soaring crime rates are all putting heavy pressure on [him],” the senator writes. Losing a customer like the U.S. might just push him over and with him, Iran’s strongest base of support in the hemisphere.

Prime Minister: Canada oil may go to China without US pipeline

OTTAWA — Delays in US approval of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline to carry oil from Alberta has forced Canada to consider a "different track" that could see the oil shipped to China instead, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said.

"I am very serious about selling our oil off this continent, selling our energy products off to Asia. I think we have to do that," Harper told broadcaster CTV in a year-end interview.

"When I was down in the United States recently it was interesting, I ran into several senior Americans who all said 'Don't worry we'll get Keystone done. You can sell all of your oil to us.' I said, 'Yeah we'd love to but I think the problem is now that we're on a different track."

Supporters say the plan to bring oil from Canada's tar sands to the United States is the ultimate shovel-ready job creation project and would spur the hiring of thousands of workers.

Environmental activists fear an accident along the 1,700-mile (2,700-kilometer) pipeline extension would be potentially disastrous for aquifers in central US Great Plains states.

Others oppose the multibillion-dollar project because exploiting the tar sands requires energy that generates a large volume of greenhouse gases that scientists blame for global warming.

The Obama administration has ordered an extra environmental assessment of a possible new route through Nebraska, which could delay a final decision until after next November's election.

That move prompted Obama's opponents to accuse him of dodging a difficult issue to avoid angering sections of his Democratic political base vote.

U.S. eyes fencing along Canadian border as missing link in security

OTTAWA - The United States is looking at building fences along the border with Canada to help keep out terrorists and other criminals.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency has proposed the use of "fencing and other barriers" on the 49th parallel to manage "trouble spots where passage of cross-border violators is difficult to control."

The border service is also pondering options including a beefed-up technological presence through increased use of radar, sensors, cameras, drones and vehicle scanners. In addition, it might continue to improve or expand customs facilities at ports of entry.

The agency considered but ruled out the possibility of hiring "significantly more" U.S. Border Patrol agents to increase the rate of inspections, noting staffing has already risen in recent years.

The proposals are spelled out in a new draft report by the border service that examines the possible environmental impact of the various options over the next five to seven years.

Customs and Border Protection is inviting comment on the options and plans a series of public meetings in Washington and several U.S. border communities next month. It will then decide which ideas to pursue.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano noted last month the challenges of monitoring the vast, sparsely populated northern border region. She stressed manpower, but also a greater reliance on technology.
