Canadian fighter jets intercept Russian bombers in Arctic

Fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers flying about 75 kilometres off Canada’s Arctic coast in the early morning hours Thursday, NORAD revealed to CBC News.

Two CF-18s met the Tupolev Tu-95 long-range bombers, commonly referred to as "Bears," at around 1:30 a.m. PT as they flew a course in “the western reaches” of Canada’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the Beaufort Sea, said Maj. Beth Smith, spokeswoman for North American Aerospace Defence Command.

The ADIZ extends approximately 320 kilometres from Canada’s coastlines, a distance far beyond the 22 kilometres, or 12 nautical miles, from the coast that define a nation’s sovereign airspace. Smith made it clear that the Russian bombers never entered Canada’s sovereign airspace, but did come within about 75 kilometres of Canada's mainland. 

The encounter comes one day after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko delivered a speech in Parliament thanking Canada for its ongoing support as his country’s forces battle with pro-Russian separatist rebels.

“This is disturbing. We’ve heard stories like in the past, of Russian bombers challenging Canadian airspace,” said James Bezan, parliamentary secretary to the Minister of National Defence and a Conservative MP from Manitoba.

“This plays into the narrative of a Putin regime that’s more aggressive not just in Crimea, not just in Ukraine, but indeed testing their neighbour in their entire region," he said. 

About six hours before the CF-18s intercepted the Russian bombers, American F-22 fighter jets were scrambled from a base in Alaska to meet a group of Russian aircraft, including two refuelling tankers, two MiG-31 fighters and two long-range bombers.

After the U.S. jets made contact, the group headed west back towards Russian airspace.

“We’re seeing increased aggressive actions being taken by the Russian Federation,” Bezan said during an interview on CBC’s Power & Politics.

Despite the ongoing tensions between Western allies and Russia, it is not the first time Canadian and U.S. aircraft have intercepted Russian bombers seemingly flying toward sovereign airspace.

According to Smith, NORAD has dispatched fighter jets to make contact with Russian long-range bombers “in excess of 50 times” in the last five years.

Canadian jets intercepted the same type of long-range bombers off the coast of Newfoundland in 2010. After that incident, Peter MacKay, then minister of defence, told CBC News that Canadian military aircraft intercept between 12 and 18 Russian bombers annually.

Toronto cancels permit for 15th annual Jesus parade

Update: After meeting with Rob Ford and the bureaucrats, the parade is back on on a different route.

With less than a month to go before the parade expected to draw thousands of participants, Toronto bureaucrats told the organizers of the annual event that it could not be held. Although excuses were given, there is no other logical explanation other than the cancellation of the event, held without incident for the past 14 years, was nothing more than Christian-bashing.

It might as well be our national motto.

Average Canadians spent 42% of their income on all forms of taxation last year and didn't start working for themselves, instead of governments, until "Tax Freedom Day" on June 9.

According to the Fraser Institute, the average family earned $77,381 and paid $32,369 in taxes in 2013, 41.8% of its income, compared to 36.1% for food, shelter and clothing combined.

That's right, we spend more on taxes than on the necessities of life.

Canadians who own homes, for example, might think paying off the mortgage is their biggest expense.

But they're wrong.

It's actually paying income taxes, payroll taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, gas taxes, surtaxes and taxes on taxes imposed by federal, provincial and municipal governments.

Since 1961, the average family's total tax bill has increased by 1,832%, dwarfing increases in shelter costs (1,375%), clothing (620%) and food (546%).

New ISIS Recruitment Video Uses Hockey, Fishing Footage to Pander to Canadians

The jihadist terror group Islamic State--formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS)--has released a new video attempting to court Canadians to the cause of jihad; it stars a Canadian man named André Poulin, who was killed in battle in Syria.

In the video, Poulin is introduced as "Abu Muslim," and he explains that he was not born into Islam but found it later, and that he left a very comfortable life in Canada to live in Syria, or "Sham." Poulin, in English, explains that he left Canada because it was impossible to live among non-Muslims and properly practice the version of his faith he found with ISIS. “I originally come from Canada. Before Islam, I was like any regular Canadian. I watched hockey. I went to the cottage in the summertime. I loved to fish. I wanted to go hunting. I liked outdoors. I liked sports,” he explains. “I was a very good person.”

While he speaks, B-roll footage of Canadians playing hockey, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors plays. It is an attempt, presumably, to show that people from all walks of life can abandon their lives at home, no matter how comfortable, and come to the battlefields of Iraq and Syria to wage jihad. Instead, it presents an enticing picture of Canada that comes off more as a tourist video than jihadist propaganda.

Poulin explains that he was "a regular person," not someone with significant social problems or triggers that would make him violent. "It wasn't like I was some social outcast. It wasn't like I was an anarchist. ... Mujahidin are regular people, too." He adds that ISIS not only needs fighters, but "engineers, volunteers, fundraisers" and that "there is a role for everybody here in Syria."

The video draws to a close with footage of Poulin fighting in Islam and being killed. It ends--in case the viewer does not believe that he is dead--with graphic footage of Poulin's body, edited using a soft-lens filter to infer that he is now in a positive afterlife.

The National Post writes that Poulin was not a "regular person" in Canada, however, as he repeatedly found himself in trouble with the law over violent threats. "He was a troubled youth who had repeated brushes with the law for crimes such as uttering threats until he left to remake himself as a jihadist fighter," explains the publication.

ISIS recruitment in Canada has become a major problem for law enforcement in the past several months. According to The Globe and Mail, about 130 jihadists are believed to have left Canada to fight in "overseas conflicts," mostly in Iraq and Syria. There is no estimate of how many of them have died in battle. The problem has become particularly acute in the city of Calgary, where Calgary police Chief Rick Hanson warned that “this is an issue that’s not going away and in the near future will continue to grow."

Olga Kotelko se calzó unas zapatillas de atletismo por primera vez a los 77 años. Se convirtió en una máquina de ganar medallas y de destrozar récords en atletismo para personas mayores. Compitió hasta que una hemorragia cerebral la derrotó el pasado martes y falleció a los 95 años.
Más de 500 medallas y 26 récords mundiales son cifras que impresionan. Más aún si se sabe que esos triunfos se cosecharon entre los 77 y 95 años. Y más aún cuando la protagonista no había practicado nunca el atletismo. Porque a Olga Kotelko (Vonda, Canadá, 1919) lo que le gustaba era el béisbol. De joven no le importaba recorrerse varios kilómetros para jugar cuando salía de la escuela y luego volver a casa.
Criada en una granja del interior de Canadá, era la séptima de 11 hijos de un matrimonio de origen ucranio. LONDON, Ont. — For some culprits stealing a police patrol boat wasn’t good enough, they had to light it on fire to finish the job.

The Ontario Provincial Police in Elgin County lost their only patrol boat Wednesday after the 24-foot vessel was taken from Stan’s Marina, driven about one kilometre out into the harbour and torched.

“It’s completely destroyed,” Elgin OPP Const. Troy Carlson said.

The cost of replacing the Sea Swirl police boat is pegged at $85,000.

The boat was the only one available for marine rescue operations along a 70-kilometre stretch of the Lake Erie shoreline.

Carlson said auxiliary Coast Guard units are normally based in Port Stanley and Port Burwell, but this isn’t the case this year, leaving the Elgin OPP boat responsible for all marine emergencies and searches in the area.

“This is a senseless act which risks the safety of the public,” Carlson said.

Quebec police search for 3 inmates after helicopter jailbreak

Provincial police are searching for three inmates with previous ties to the Hells Angels who escaped from a Quebec City detention centre using a helicopter.

A Sûreté du Québec spokesperson confirmed to CBC News that the prison break occurred at 7:45 p.m. ET from Orsainville Detention Centre and the inmates fled westbound in a green helicopter.

"We are talking closely with the detention centre to figure out exactly how the escape transpired,” said Ann Mathieu. "The priority number one is to find the helicopter."

Police are now searching for Yves Denis, 35, Denis Lefebvre, 53, and 49-year-old Serge Pomerleau.

In 2010, Lefebvre was arrested by provincial police after a drug operation bust known as Project Crayfish that led to dozens of arrests. He was reported to have had ties to the Hells Angels.

During the bust police seized multiple weapons, 41 vehicles, a plane, a helicopter and $905,000, CBC Radio-Canada reported.

The three who escaped were being held at the detention centre waiting to stand trial, but it was not immediately clear what charges they were facing.

Police are warning anyone who sees the men not approach them and to call police immediately.

Last year, there was a daring escape at St-Jerome prison in Quebec involving a helicopter where a pilot was forced at gunpoint to pluck two inmates from the facility on a Sunday afternoon.

The two escapees and the two suspects who hijacked the chopper were caught by police within a few hours of the escape.

- Iran is collaborating with Venezuela and Cuba to exploit the seams in the Canadian immigration system.

- Venezuelan authorities provided at least 173 passports, visas and other documentation to Islamist extremists seeking to slip unnoticed into North America.

As regards the passports, visas and other documentation to Islamist extremists, it's important to remember that Venezuela's immigration system has been under Cuban control since 2004.

At that time, Cuba's former intelligence chief, General Ramiro Valdes, and the Vice-Chancellor of its University of Information Science (UCI), Jose Lavandero Garcia, oversaw and implemented the complete overhaul of Venezuela's passport and naturalization agency (including all of its data, software and systems), formerly known as ONIDEX.

Quebec man who killed teen daughter with slap gets 60 days in jail

A Quebec man who slapped his teenage daughter so hard that it led to her death has been sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Moussa Sidimé, of Longueuil, Que., will be able to serve his sentence on weekends over 30 weeks, which will be followed by two years of probation.

The 74-year-old pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2010 death of his daughter Nouténé.

Sidimé got into an argument with Nouténé about how she was conducting her chores and he slapped her on both sides of her face.

Minutes later Sidimé found the 13-year-old unconscious and called 911. She died three days later in hospital, never coming out of a coma.

Sidimé was initially charged with aggravated assault causing death. But a pathologist's report found that Nouténé died of a cerebral hemorrhage and the slaps were a factor in her death, and the charges were changed to manslaughter.

The family called the death a tragic accident.

How an MP’s open-door policy welcomed me to the world of politics

We reached out to this year’s Everyday Political Citizens to learn how they ended up at the political table. Throughout March and April we’ll be sharing their stories. Today’s blog post is written by Gabriela Gonzalez, an Everyday Political Citizen living in Toronto, Ontario.

As a third year university student with a keen desire to give back to the country that opened its doors to me, I found an opportunity in the open door policy of one extraordinary Member of Parliament (MP).

I walked into then MP Gerard Kennedy’s Constituency Office in the summer of 2009. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew I had to sit at the table or at least step into the office if I wanted to have a role in shaping the country. At that time Gerard, his small staff and a team of youth volunteers were working on a research project. They were trying to determine if the federal government’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund program was being rolled out in a timely manner and having the desired job creation impact in communities across the country. This program was put in place amidst the 2008 economic recession to help Canada’s aging infrastructure while trying to boost employment numbers.

I was invited to join the project as a volunteer and made cold calls to municipalities to determine the status of those infrastructure projects and the number of jobs created. The result of the research garnered dozens of news articles and helped shed light on a government program that we felt was not being effective. This was the work of an MP and Shadow Minister putting to great use the limited resources that are granted to opposition members in the House of Commons. A Shadow Ministers’ role is to scrutinize government decisions and programs to determine their effectiveness. Seeing democracy being implemented right before my eyes was fascinating and I was immediately hooked on politics. This was my first political moment.

In our democratic society, voting is the most powerful instrument that we have at our disposal to help shape the kind of society that we want to live in. Governments make important decisions about the quality of our health care, the education system, the protection of the environment and even the business climate. However, since the opportunity to use this tool may only come every four years, getting politically involved between elections is a great way to impact the political dialogue.

To anyone who has ever wanted to get involved but felt unsure how to take the first step, I’d say go ahead and start small - follow your local politicians’  activities on social media and sign up for their newsletters. By doing so, you can stay abreast, in real time, of what happens in your community and how your political representatives are staying involved. You can also contact your local riding association. That said, while it is relatively easy to access a politician’s contact information on the House of Commons or provincial legislature’s website; it’s a different case with riding associations. Samara’s own research shows that riding associations are lagging when it comes to publicizing ways for constituents to get involved.  So, if you can’t get in touch with, or don’t feel that your riding association is very engaging, don’t worry. Now is a great time to get involved, because with a number of upcoming elections (especially in Ontario), there are going to be a lot of people who need help on their campaigns.

With a possible provincial election in Ontario, an election in Toronto —Canada’s 6th largest government — and a federal election sometime in 2015, politicians at all levels are preparing, and should be eager to accept volunteers. Tweet at them or send them an email and you might be surprised how likely you are to receive a welcoming response. If your current politician does not appeal to you, find which candidate or party you sympathize with and contact them. From my own experience and as documented by many others, campaigns are an excellent opportunity to get your first political moment and hone in on some great life and professional skills. If you are up to the challenge, maybe your first political moment will get your political career started, like mine did. 

Islamist Internet threat 'theatre,' expert says

OTTAWA -- Canada is the latest western country to receive an Internet threat from an Islamic militant group fighting in Syria's civil war.

"This is a message to Canada and all of America," says a young English-speaking man on a recently uploaded YouTube video. "We are coming and we will destroy you."

The man, who in the 75-second clip is surrounded by masked people holding rifles, claims to be a member of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIL.

"I (came) to this land for one reason alone," the man says before tearing and burning what looks like a passport, "I left comfort for one reason alone: For (God)."

ISIL, which is operating in Syria, has been publicly disavowed by al-Qaeda for being too unruly and unmanageable.

Mubin Shaikh, an expert on Islamic militant groups, says that ISIL is known to be so vicious it kills fellow Muslims whom the group claims don't subscribe to its brand of Islam.

The former CSIS and RCMP mole who infiltrated the Toronto 18 terror cell in 2006, says he is completing his PhD.

He says Canadians shouldn't be too concerned about the video since it is most likely staged and being used for marketing purposes.

"This video clip is theatre," he said. "It served a number of purposes; it appeals to (ISIL's) own groups and those they want to recruit."

Canadian Dentist to Use John Lennon's Tooth to Clone Baby from Dead Beatle's DNA

During an episode of Dead Famous DNA on Channel 4 in England, Canadian dentist Dr. Michael Zuk revealed that he plans on using DNA from one of John Lennon’s teeth to make a clone baby that he can raise as his own.

“If there is enough DNA to sequence it, it could be basically genetic real estate,” Zuk said. “My goal is to own John Lennon’s DNA.”

Zuk purchased Lennon’s molar for $33,000 when it was put up for auction about three years ago.

The doctor believes that owning the tooth grants him the rights to Lennon’s DNA.

“I think I can, because of the laws,” Dr. Zuk said. “Depends on where you do these things. If it can’t be done in one country, you can do these things in another. To have John Lennon’s DNA sequence outside of the family protection to me, and full access to it, is worth millions.”

He even has a plan about how to make sure the test-tube baby becomes a success.

“He would still be his exact duplicate but you know, hopefully keep him away from drugs and cigarettes, that kind of thing,” Zuk said. “But you know, guitar lessons wouldn’t hurt anyone right?”

Russian diplomat stabbed in Canada

A Russian diplomat was stabbed Friday in the Canadian capital following a drunken quarrel, officials and media reports said.

Ottawa police said they responded to an emergency call at 8:43 am (1243 GMT) about a stabbing near the Russian Embassy and found a 44-year-old man suffering from "stab wounds."

The victim was taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while a second man was taken into custody for questioning.

John Babcock, spokesman for Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs, told AFP that government officials have been in touch with the Russian Embassy.
