How an MP’s open-door policy welcomed me to the world of politics

What makes some people so passionate about politics? Sometimes it’s as simple as an invitation, or an extracurricular activity. We reached out to this year’s Everyday Political Citizens to learn how they ended up at the political table. Throughout March and April we’ll be sharing their stories. Today’s blog post is written by Gabriela Gonzalez, an Everyday Political Citizen living in Toronto, Ontario.

As a third year university student with a keen desire to give back to the country that opened its doors to me, I found an opportunity in the open door policy of one extraordinary Member of Parliament (MP).

I walked into then MP Gerard Kennedy’s Constituency Office in the summer of 2009. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew I had to sit at the table or at least step into the office if I wanted to have a role in shaping the country. At that time Gerard, his small staff and a team of youth volunteers were working on a research project. They were trying to determine if the federal government’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund program was being rolled out in a timely manner and having the desired job creation impact in communities across the country. This program was put in place amidst the 2008 economic recession to help Canada’s aging infrastructure while trying to boost employment numbers.

I was invited to join the project as a volunteer and made cold calls to municipalities to determine the status of those infrastructure projects and the number of jobs created. The result of the research garnered dozens of news articles and helped shed light on a government program that we felt was not being effective. This was the work of an MP and Shadow Minister putting to great use the limited resources that are granted to opposition members in the House of Commons. A Shadow Ministers’ role is to scrutinize government decisions and programs to determine their effectiveness. Seeing democracy being implemented right before my eyes was fascinating and I was immediately hooked on politics. This was my first political moment.

Gabriela (left) at the Ontario Liberal leadership convention in 2013

In our democratic society, voting is the most powerful instrument that we have at our disposal to help shape the kind of society that we want to live in. Governments make important decisions about the quality of our health care, the education system, the protection of the environment and even the business climate. However, since the opportunity to use this tool may only come every four years, getting politically involved between elections is a great way to impact the political dialogue.

To anyone who has ever wanted to get involved but felt unsure how to take the first step, I’d say go ahead and start small - follow your local politicians’  activities on social media and sign up for their newsletters. By doing so, you can stay abreast, in real time, of what happens in your community and how your political representatives are staying involved. You can also contact your local riding association. That said, while it is relatively easy to access a politician’s contact information on the House of Commons or provincial legislature’s website; it’s a different case with riding associations. Samara’s own research shows that riding associations are lagging when it comes to publicizing ways for constituents to get involved.  So, if you can’t get in touch with, or don’t feel that your riding association is very engaging, don’t worry. Now is a great time to get involved, because with a number of upcoming elections (especially in Ontario), there are going to be a lot of people who need help on their campaigns.

Gabriela meeting supporters at an event in Toronto

With a possible provincial election in Ontario, an election in Toronto —Canada’s 6th largest government — and a federal election sometime in 2015, politicians at all levels are preparing, and should be eager to accept volunteers. Tweet at them or send them an email and you might be surprised how likely you are to receive a welcoming response. If your current politician does not appeal to you, find which candidate or party you sympathize with and contact them. From my own experience and as documented by many others, campaigns are an excellent opportunity to get your first political moment and hone in on some great life and professional skills. If you are up to the challenge, maybe your first political moment will get your political career started, like mine did.

Islamist Internet threat 'theatre,' expert says

OTTAWA -- Canada is the latest western country to receive an Internet threat from an Islamic militant group fighting in Syria's civil war.
"This is a message to Canada and all of America," says a young English-speaking man on a recently uploaded YouTube video. "We are coming and we will destroy you."
The man, who in the 75-second clip is surrounded by masked people holding rifles, claims to be a member of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIL.
"I (came) to this land for one reason alone," the man says before tearing and burning what looks like a passport, "I left comfort for one reason alone: For (God)."
ISIL, which is operating in Syria, has been publicly disavowed by al-Qaeda for being too unruly and unmanageable.
Mubin Shaikh, an expert on Islamic militant groups, says that ISIL is known to be so vicious it kills fellow Muslims whom the group claims don't subscribe to its brand of Islam.
The former CSIS and RCMP mole who infiltrated the Toronto 18 terror cell in 2006, says he is completing his PhD.
He says Canadians shouldn't be too concerned about the video since it is most likely staged and being used for marketing purposes.
"This video clip is theatre," he said. "It served a number of purposes; it appeals to (ISIL's) own groups and those they want to recruit."

Canadian Dentist to Use John Lennon's Tooth to Clone Baby from Dead Beatle's DNA

RED DEER, Alberta, April 10 (UPI) -- All you need is love -- and maybe an old tooth…

During an episode of Dead Famous DNA on Channel 4 in England, Canadian dentist Dr. Michael Zuk revealed that he plans on using DNA from one of John Lennon’s teeth to make a clone baby that he can raise as his own.
“If there is enough DNA to sequence it, it could be basically genetic real estate,” Zuk said. “My goal is to own John Lennon’s DNA.”
Zuk purchased Lennon’s molar for $33,000 when it was put up for auction about three years ago.
The doctor believes that owning the tooth grants him the rights to Lennon’s DNA.
“I think I can, because of the laws,” Dr. Zuk said. “Depends on where you do these things. If it can’t be done in one country, you can do these things in another. To have John Lennon’s DNA sequence outside of the family protection to me, and full access to it, is worth millions.”
He even has a plan about how to make sure the test-tube baby becomes a success.
“He would still be his exact duplicate but you know, hopefully keep him away from drugs and cigarettes, that kind of thing,” Zuk said. “But you know, guitar lessons wouldn’t hurt anyone right?”

Sign the petition: Canada House of Commons on Venezuela's crisis

Dear Friends:
After a week of negotiations, the House of Commons passed the following Motion:
" That the House express its deep concern at the escalation of violence in Venezuela; convey its condolences to the families those killed or injured during the ongoing public protests; ask the Government of Canada to urge Venezuelan authorities to proactively de-escalate the conflict, protect the human and democratic freedoms of Venezuelan citizens, release all those detained during the protests, immediately cease all government interference with peaceful protesters, and ensure that those people who perpetrated the violence be brought to justice and bear the full weight of the law; encourage the Government of Canada to play a leading role in supporting a political dialogue in Venezuela that respects legitimate grievances and differences of opinion; and call for an end to divisive rhetoric and actions that only delay and jeopardize the inclusive political solution that the Venezuelan people deserve."
It is now time to “encourage the Government of Canada to play a leading role” in resolving the crisis facing the people of Venezuela.
The Government of Canada needs to hear your voices.  Only you can pressure the Conservative Government to take the same type of action it has taken in respect to the problems in Ukraine.

Growing medical marijuana is a big business in Canada

Tweed Inc. workers tend to medical marijuana plants at a new commercial operation set up inside a former Hershey's chocolate factory, in Smiths Falls, Ontario, an hour's drive from Ottawa, on February 4, 2014
An hour's drive south of Canada's capital, past snow-covered pine forests and farmland, Chuck Rifici is growing marijuana at an old Hershey's factory.
He plans to sell it for medical use under a new government scheme starting on April 1 that will ban home cultivation in favor of large commercial greenhouses.
Rifici's start-up Tweed Inc. is one of only six companies so far to earn a license to grow from Health Canada, and will be the first in the world to be publicly traded on a stock exchange.
Security is airtight -- as required by the new federal regulations. Staff must swipe identification cards each time they enter and leave a room, and the facility in Smiths Falls is under constant video surveillance.
"It's like manufacturing inside a bank," Rifici told AFP during a tour of the facility. "But otherwise, it's just like any other horticultural operation."
Inside, workers wearing laboratory coats and hair nets are constantly pruning the plants. Heat, humidity, carbon dioxide, air flow, nutrients feeding and light (12 hours on, 12 hours off) are monitored and controlled by sophisticated software.

Hershey's used to make chocolate here, but the factory closed six years ago, after five decades in operation.
Tweed, with almost Can$10 million (US$9 million) in "seed money," has moved in and plans to distribute its marijuana across Canada for medical use.
When renovations are completed, the Tweed factory will contain 30 grow rooms containing 1,300 plants each, as well as a "mother room" for seedlings.
"It'll be bright like the sun in here," said Rifici, pointing to bulbs being installed in one grow room. Workers will need to wear sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts and sunblock to enter, he said.
Paint on the walls is still wet. In a corner, old two-story tanks that once contained sugar for making chocolate candies are being repurposed to hold water for hydroponics.
The marijuana itself, once it is cut and dried and packaged, will be stored in a secure vault awaiting shipment by mail or courier to customers. The vault can hold up to Can$150 million worth of cannabis.
- New rules -

Michel Comte/AFP/File

The use of marijuana for medicinal purposes was effectively legalized in Canada in 1999, and such use has been expanded through a series of court challenges.
According to government figures, more than 37,350 Canadians have prescriptions for medical marijuana. The typical user is male, in his 40s, and smokes 10 grams per day.
Health Canada originally tried supplying the drug, growing it in an abandoned mine shaft in the far north, but it was widely panned as weak.
Thereafter nearly 30,000 home-based growing operations were allowed to crop up. But local officials complained about a lack of monitoring, and police worried about an increase in crime.
Under the new regulatory regime, all of these small gardens will be replaced by fewer but larger commercial operations. Health Canada is reviewing 450 applications for the new commercial licenses.
- High demand expected -
"This is a brand new industry created by government regulatory changes, and growth is expected to be massive," said Rifici, citing government estimates that the number of users will grow to 450,000 by 2024.
Customers have already started placing orders for Tweed's 25 strains that will sell for Can$4 to Can$12 per gram.
Tweed initially expects to harvest 50-100 kilograms (110-220 pounds) of marijuana every two months. The company is licensed to grow and sell up to 15,000 kilograms per year.
All six currently licensed companies are focused on the domestic market, but some are open to export opportunities. Canadian-Dutch joint venture Bedrocan is expected to become the first to legally import marijuana into Canada.
Recreational use remains prohibited under Canadian law.
But Rifici, who has ties to Canada's opposition Liberals, said he is closely watching the "political winds." Liberal leader Justin Trudeau has called for decriminalization, but three other attempts to change the law have failed.
Rifici noted that the new regulations have created a production and distribution system that could also accommodate sales to recreational pot smokers, who are estimated to number one million nationwide.
- Small town job creator -
Tweed currently employs 20 staff, but as it ramps up, it expects to add up to 200 jobs.
This doesn't quite make up for the 600 jobs lost when Hershey's shut down the plant. But Tweed plans to lease some of its 500,000 square feet (46,450 square meters) of factory space to others to make up the difference.
Smiths Falls, a town of 9,000 residents, has faced "significant economic challenges in the past few years," said Mayor Dennis Staples.
If Tweed hadn't come along, the plant would have been demolished and the town -- which has shed 1,700 jobs in recent times -- would have lost crucial industrial capacity, he told AFP.
"We dodged a bullet with Tweed's arrival," Staples said.
According to Rifici, Tweed is fully funded for at least two years of operations, and is "hoping for profitability sooner rather than later."
He said he was self-conscious at first as he sought funding.
"I found myself whispering 'marijuana' across tables at coffee shops to potential investors," he said. When he gave the local police chief a tour of his factory, he said "it just felt very strange."
Now, Rifici's biggest challenge is lining up customers because medical marijuana is a controlled substance and cannot be advertised in Canada.
Tweed has relied a lot on media coverage. It is also planning a listing on the Canadian Venture Exchange to boost its visibility and for easier access to capital, if needed, to grow the business.
"We'll be the first marijuana grower to be listed on a stock exchange," Rifici said.

Only in Canada: Fire destroys Mount Albert fire station!!!

A volunteer fire hall in Mount Albert was destroyed after a fire ripped through the decades-old building early Sunday morning.
The blaze started at 8 a.m. in the East Gwillimbury Fire Station 2-6, which is one of three in the area.
Crews from a neighbouring community were able to get the fire under control, but not before the blaze engulfed the 40-year-old building in flames.
It is believed six fire vehicles were destroyed in the blaze, including a brand-new pumper worth approximately $750,000.
East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson called it a ‘substantial loss’ for the community.
“We have our fire hall itself that we’ve lost, as well as all the equipment from our firefighters, all their safety equipment,” she said.
Meanwhile, residents are concerned about the potential loss of service in an emergency.
“Hopefully, nothing happens to anybody anytime soon, that we need the fire department to come to our house quickly,” one resident said.
But town officials say a plan is being worked out.
“Our focus is to ensure that the community of Mount Albert is maintaining its community safety,” said East Gwillimbury Fire Chief Phil Dawson.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating.

The Reign of Collective Stupidity

An acquaintance of mine tells the story of finding himself in the midst of a public demonstration against Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The chant being raised, so reminiscent of the 1960s, was: Hey, Hey, Ho Ho! Stephen Harper Has Got To Go. My acquaintance asked a placard-bearing young woman, obviously a student, what precisely she objected to in Harper's conduct and policies. She was unable to respond. He repeated his question and, after some hesitation on her part, received the answer: "I don't know, but he's got to go." Ipse dixit!

Listening to CBC radio's weekly opinion sampler, Cross-Canada Checkup, on the Sunday before New Year, I was treated to a random specimen of public perspectives and sentiments on issues regarded as having been of major importance in the year coming to an end. I learned, inter alia, that global warming was a dire threat to the continuance of the species. I discovered that our conservative government has pursued an agenda injurious to the national interest. And so on. That global warming has been largely discredited and that temperatures have remained stable for the last 17 years was, apparently, news to the coast-to-coast participants in the program. They had never heard of premier Canadian climatologists Tom Harris, Lawrence Solomon, Tim Patterson and Ross McKitrick (oft maligned by the denizens of the global warming industry) or of the Oregon Petition with its 32,000 dissenting scientists. (As James Lewis comments, "Anybody who still falls for climate scare-lines after this freezing winter is either (a) terminally brainwashed or (b) stupid beyond repair. It's often hard to tell the difference.") That the Harper government had steered the country through the fiscal meltdown of the last tumultuous years, leaving it in one of the strongest economic positions in the developed world, was scarcely a blip on the radar of national consciousness. People with salaries and the leisure to opine at length on phone-in programs seem to think this privileged condition is somehow natural and unassailable.

Recent polls have indicated that Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, a youngish wavy-haired ignoramus whose only credentials are that he is a former prime minister's son, a part-time public school drama teacher and bungee-diving coach, and rather pretty in comparison to our elder statesmen and pudgy politicians, leads Stephen Harper by a 10 percent margin in electoral popularity. Harper, for all his faults, kept the country afloat. Trudeau would have sunk it in record time, with shenanigans like his vote-trawling outreach to a terror-linked Islamic organization, his refusal to call honor killings "barbaric," his objections to the immensely profitable Northern Gateway pipeline (while approving of the Keystone XL project. Go figure!), his favorable comments on Quebec sovereignty, and the inevitable tax hikes the Liberal party would impose on the middle class. Yet the Canadian public has to date smiled benignly on a man who performs a partial strip tease in front of smitten ladies during a charity event. The level of political imbecility we are witnessing is incommensurable.

Canada, however, is small beer in comparison to the political travesty that is the United States, where nearly half the population relies on food stamps, welfare payments, tax rebates and a blizzard of entitlements, whose foreign policy is a shambles of half-baked and destructive initiatives, which boasts a scandal-ridden and thoroughly inept administration and is mired in a swamp of economic insecurity, which has exponentially expanded a "coercive, intrusive regulatory regime" as well as devastating the healthcare system, and which twice elects a man who would make a Justin Trudeau prime ministry look like a feasible alternative to the electoral mayhem, fiduciary malfeasance and political stagnation that "The One" has inflicted upon his nation.

Only in Canada: Man found with pipe bomb at Edmonton airport allowed to fly

An 18-year-old man who was allowed to get on a flight at Edmonton International Airport in September after he was caught bringing a pipe bomb to security has been sentenced for possession of an explosive device.
Skylar Vincent Murphy was caught with the pipe bomb on Sept. 20. Security took the explosive away, but Murphy was given the go-ahead to continue on his flight. Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) alerted RCMP to the case four days later. Murphy was arrested by Leduc RCMP on Sept. 27.
In an email response to questions from CBC News, CATSA spokesman Mathieu Larocque did not address why Murphy was allowed to get on the plane.
"Screening officers do not have the authority to apprehend or detain passengers," he wrote. "When they see something potentially illegal, the(y) contact the police."
On Dec. 5, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year probation and a $100 fine.
He is also prohibited from possessing explosives, firearms or ammunition for one year, and must also make a $500 donation to the University of Alberta burn unit.

Top Canada court strikes down prostitution restrictions

www.bbc.co.uk
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's Supreme Court struck down major restrictions on prostitution on Friday, including bans on brothels and street solicitation, declaring the laws unconstitutional because they violated prostitutes' safety.

The sweeping 9-0 decision will take effect in one year, inviting Parliament to try to come up with some other way to regulate the sex trade if it chooses to do so.

Prostitution is technically legal in Canada but most related activities have been illegal, including living off the avails of someone else's prostitution. The court found these prohibitions were overly broad or grossly out of proportion to the law's goals.

Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin said a law that banned what she called "safe havens" for prostitutes exposed them to risks from predators. She said many prostitutes had no choice but to work in the sex trade, and the law should not make their work more dangerous.

"The impugned laws deprive people engaged in a risky, but legal, activity of the means to protect themselves against those risks," she wrote. "It makes no difference that the conduct of pimps and johns is the immediate source of the harms suffered by prostitutes."

One current prostitute and two former ones, including a dominatrix, had initiated the challenge to Canada's laws, arguing that sex workers would be safer if they were allowed to screen clients, or so-called johns, and operate in brothels with bodyguards if they chose.

One of the plaintiffs, retired dominatrix Terri Bedford, dressed in black leather, cracked a riding crop with a whoop in front of reporters in the Supreme Court lobby as she declared it was a "great day for Canada, for Canadian women from coast to coast."

Another former prostitute, Valerie Scott said the Supreme Court had for the first time in Canada declared those in the sex trade to be persons.

However, Janine Benedet, who argued before the court for the Women's Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution, said Parliament should make pimping and the buying of sex illegal: "There is no constitutional right to buy a woman for sex."

McLachlin dismissed the federal government's argument that it was prostitution itself, not the laws that govern it, that puts prostitutes at risk.

The safety of prostitutes became a high-profile issue in Canada following the trial and 2007 conviction of serial killer Robert Pickton, who preyed on prostitutes and other women in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside neighborhood.

"A law that prevents street prostitutes from resorting to safe havens...while a suspected serial killer prowls the streets, is a law that has lost sight of its purpose," McLachlin wrote.

Prostitution is legal in much of Europe and Latin America, and brothels are legal in numerous countries including the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. But questions have begun to be raised, partly because of human trafficking. France's lower house of parliament passed a law this month imposing stiff fines on clients.

"How prostitution is regulated is a matter of great public concern, and few countries leave it entirely unregulated," McLachlin wrote in explaining why she suspended the effect of the judgment for a year.

She said her decision "does not mean that Parliament is precluded from imposing limits on where and how prostitution may be conducted," noting that various provisions were intertwined.

"Greater latitude in one measure - for example, permitting prostitutes to obtain the assistance of security personnel - might impact on the constitutionality of another measure - for example, forbidding the nuisances associated with keeping a bawdy house (brothel)."

Federal Justice Minister Peter MacKay expressed concern with the decision and said the government was "exploring all possible options to ensure the criminal law continues to address the significant harms that flow from prostitution to communities, those engaged in prostitution, and vulnerable persons."

The idea of criminalizing the purchase of sex and of pimping follows what has become known as the Swedish model and then more broadly the Nordic model as Norway followed suit.

Evangelical Fellowship of Canada lawyer Don Hutchinson said the evidence was that the decriminalization of prostitution leads to increased rates of human trafficking. He said his organization had last week submitted to Parliament a report urging an adaptation of the Swedish model.

In the mean time, the prostitutes' lawyer, Alan Young, said he expected that for the next year police and prosecutors would likely go easy on enforcing the current laws in light of Friday's decision.

The name of the case is Canada (Attorney General) v. Bedford, 2013 SCC 72.

Canada’s prime minister wants to claim the North Pole

Canada’s prime minister has ordered the inclusion of the North Pole in the country’s Arctic claim after it was excluded from a proposed UN submission, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
Canada will still meet a December 6 deadline for filing an application to the United Nations to extend its northern sea boundary, according to the daily Globe and Mail.
But it now also plans to follow up with a broader claim that includes the geographic North Pole once additional surveying, analysis and paperwork is completed, it said.
The newspaper cited senior government officials as saying Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave the order to bureaucrats after seeing a draft of the UN submission.
Harper’s office declined to comment on the report, telling AFP only that “Canada is in the process of securing its sovereignty over the north.”
Canadian sovereignty over the far north has been a key plank of Harper’s Tories since his government was first elected in 2006.
Every summer in recent years, Harper has traveled to the region to observe Canadian military exercises the harsh environment.
Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the United States claim overlapping parts of the region believed to be rich in hydrocarbons, and have been rushing to gather evidence in support of their respective claims.
Rising temperatures have boosted interest in the polar region, as melting ice opens up shipping routes and makes hitherto inaccessible mineral resources easier to exploit.
According to the US Geological Survey, the Arctic seabed is thought to hold about 90 billion barrels of oil and 30 percent of the world’s undiscovered gas resources.
The North Pole seabed itself is not believed to hold large reserves but has symbolic value for the countries in the region.
Nations bordering the Arctic currently are entitled to a 200 nautical mile economic zone from their coastlines, but claims for extending their territories will be decided under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the

Only in Canada: Ticketless lottery jackpot win $50 millions

GlobalToronto
An Ontario woman is about to become one of the richest women in the country, even though she can't find the winning lottery ticket she bought a year ago.

Royal Canadian Mint’s chair allegedly helped a former prime minister’s heirs hide millions of dollars offshore

James Love with Finance Minister Jim Flaherty
James Love, who also advised Finance Minister Jim Flaherty on international taxation, acted on behalf of the family of Arthur Meighen, who served as prime minister of Canada from July 10, 1920 to December 29, 1921.
In a lawsuit, two Meighen granddaughters accused him of breach of trust over the offshore transactions they claimed were unlawful and negligent.
Court documents in the suit filed in 2008 and discreetly settled three years later say Love helped arrange the transfer of more than Can$8 million starting in 1996 to Bermuda, Barbados and Antigua.
Obtained by public broadcaster CBC, the documents show Tara and Alyssa Meighen had concerns about taxes, interest and penalties if the scheme was ever exposed.
The CBC said Love countered in sworn statements that the offshore transfers “resulted in significant savings of Canadian taxes” for Meighen’s heirs, estimated at Can$1 million.
He also denied any breach of trust.
Moving assets to offshore trusts is not inherently illegal, but Canada and other Western nations have moved to tighten the rules to prevent abuses.
Love reportedly acknowledged in an affidavit rules in the Canadian tax code “to prevent transfers of assets from Canada to avoid Canadian taxation.”
But he nevertheless advised trustees of the Meighen family fortune that “it might be possible to structure a transaction that would have the intended results.”
“Such a result might be obtained through a more complex transaction,” he said in the affidavit.

The trustee, Canada Trust, which has since been absorbed by TD Bank, agreed to what it described as a “tax avoidance scheme” in an internal memo filed with the court.
The money was routed through a dozen transfers involving numbered companies and bank accounts in Ontario, New York, Barbados, Bermuda and Antigua, as well as share transfers and loans.
Eventually the funds appeared to end up back in Canada. The Antigua holding companies that absorbed the funds reportedly hired Love’s Toronto-based financial firm, Legacy Private Trust, as an investment manager.
Love was appointed to the board of the Royal Canadian Mint in 2006 and was named chair in 2009.
Love, a close friend of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty who was appointed to the Mint’s board in 2006, was also a trustee for most of the last decade of the Arthur Meighen Trust, an entity set up by the former Conservative PM in 1949 to distribute his wealth to his family. Before taking on that formal role, documents show Love had been an adviser and “close” friend to several Meighen family members.
It was in that advisory role that Love, in the mid-1990s, informed the managers of the Meighen Trust that they could get “Canadian tax relief on the income from about 40 per cent of the [trust] assets” if they moved the money offshore, Meighen’s great-granddaughters say in their statement of claim.
The use of secret accounts in offshore jurisdictions like Switzerland or the Cayman Islands has been thrust into the media limelight in recent years, following a spate of data leaks — including from several Swiss banks — that exposed account-holders’ identities and information.  The most recent large leak was made public in April, when CBC News teamed up with the U.S.-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists to report on secret accounts linked to 130,000 people worldwide.

Only in Canada: Marijuana-smoking Mountie stirs the pot in Canada

www.interaksyon.com
Ottawa (AFP) - A Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer with a medical marijuana prescription for job-related stress provoked a national debate Thursday over whether he should be allowed to smoke in uniform.

Corporal Ronald Francis serves in Canada's New Brunswick province, and reportedly received a prescription for medical-grade marijuana on November 4.
He told Canada's public broadcaster CBC that he should be allowed to smoke joints while in uniform, but received a cool response from his bosses who fear tarnishing the RCMP's image.
Reactions poured in from across Canada both in support and against the corporal's plea, including from Attorney General Peter MacKay who said it would "set a very poor example for Canadians."
Cannabis advocates meanwhile said the case underscores the need for employers to better understand medical marijuana use.
Health Canada established regulations for accessing cannabis for medical purposes in 2001 after the courts struck down a broad prohibition of marijuana.
But it remains controversial.
Francis told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which aired video footage of him smoking a joint in his RCMP red serge, that pot has helped relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress related to 21 years on the job.
His prescription allows for three grams, or up to 15 joints, a day, though he said he does not typically smoke that much.
"I get up in the morning, have my coffee and the marijuana. I go at lunchtime, have a marijuana joint, and then again in the evening. That would be my medical regime. But that may change with my tolerance to THC. It may take two joints in the morning, I don't know," he said.
"I'm still functional," he added. "But your nervous system is relaxed, and that makes a big difference."
"I had to really make a moral decision about it. Because the RCMP and law enforcement, they seem so anti-marijuana, and that's a hard thing to overcome, so I had to make that decision for my own health. It wasn’t based on my career or anything."
RCMP Deputy Commissioner Gilles Moreau meanwhile told the broadcaster that officers with a medical marijuana prescription can take their medication.
But he said they should not do so while in uniform in public.
"Definitely a member that has been prescribed medicinal marijuana should not be in red serge taking his medication," Moreau was quoted as saying.
"It would not be advisable for that member, it would not portray the right message to the general public, it's definitely not something we would support or condone."
The RCMP noted that Francis has been assigned to desk duty and does not carry a gun.

(el-alto-sueño);

le pidieron las piernas

duras y nudosas

¿No me envidias?”.
“…Me cuidan, me cuidan un poquito entre todos. No le hacen caso a uno, siempre estoy peleando para que no me manden nada. Cuando cojo el sol por la mañana en shorts y siento el aire de mar, me parece que estoy en una playa… ¡Me van a hacer creer que estoy de vacaciones! ¿Qué diría Carlos Marx de semejantes revolucionarios?”.
