Only in Canada: Fire destroys Mount Albert fire station!!!

A volunteer fire hall in Mount Albert was destroyed after a fire ripped through the decades-old building early Sunday morning.
The blaze started at 8 a.m. in the East Gwillimbury Fire Station 2-6, which is one of three in the area.
Crews from a neighbouring community were able to get the fire under control, but not before the blaze engulfed the 40-year-old building in flames.
It is believed six fire vehicles were destroyed in the blaze, including a brand-new pumper worth approximately $750,000.
East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson called it a ‘substantial loss’ for the community.
“We have our fire hall itself that we’ve lost, as well as all the equipment from our firefighters, all their safety equipment,” she said.
Meanwhile, residents are concerned about the potential loss of service in an emergency.
“Hopefully, nothing happens to anybody anytime soon, that we need the fire department to come to our house quickly,” one resident said.
But town officials say a plan is being worked out.
“Our focus is to ensure that the community of Mount Albert is maintaining its community safety,” said East Gwillimbury Fire Chief Phil Dawson.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating.

The Reign of Collective Stupidity

An acquaintance of mine tells the story of finding himself in the midst of a public demonstration against Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The chant being raised, so reminiscent of the 1960s, was: Hey, Hey, Ho Ho! Stephen Harper Has Got To Go. My acquaintance asked a placard-bearing young woman, obviously a student, what precisely she objected to in Harper's conduct and policies. She was unable to respond. He repeated his question and, after some hesitation on her part, received the answer: "I don't know, but he's got to go." Ipse dixit!

Listening to CBC radio's weekly opinion sampler, Cross-Canada Checkup, on the Sunday before New Year, I was treated to a random specimen of public perspectives and sentiments on issues regarded as having been of major importance in the year coming to an end. I learned, inter alia, that global warming was a dire threat to the continuance of the species. I discovered that our conservative government has pursued an agenda injurious to the national interest. And so on. That global warming has been largely discredited and that temperatures have remained stable for the last 17 years was, apparently, news to the coast-to-coast participants in the program. They had never heard of premier Canadian climatologists Tom Harris, Lawrence Solomon, Tim Patterson and Ross McKitrick (oft maligned by the denizens of the global warming industry) or of the Oregon Petition with its 32,000 dissenting scientists. (As James Lewis comments, "Anybody who still falls for climate scare-lines after this freezing winter is either (a) terminally brainwashed or (b) stupid beyond repair. It's often hard to tell the difference.") That the Harper government had steered the country through the fiscal meltdown of the last tumultuous years, leaving it in one of the strongest economic positions in the developed world, was scarcely a blip on the radar of national consciousness. People with salaries and the leisure to opine at length on phone-in programs seem to think this privileged condition is somehow natural and unassailable.

Recent polls have indicated that Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, a youngish wavy-haired ignoramus whose only credentials are that he is a former prime minister's son, a part-time public school drama teacher and bungee-diving coach, and rather pretty in comparison to our elder statesmen and pudgy politicians, leads Stephen Harper by a 10 percent margin in electoral popularity. Harper, for all his faults, kept the country afloat. Trudeau would have sunk it in record time, with shenanigans like his vote-trawling outreach to a terror-linked Islamic organization, his refusal to call honor killings "barbaric," his objections to the immensely profitable Northern Gateway pipeline (while approving of the Keystone XL project. Go figure!), his favorable comments on Quebec sovereignty, and the inevitable tax hikes the Liberal party would impose on the middle class. Yet the Canadian public has to date smiled benignly on a man who performs a partial strip tease in front of smitten ladies during a charity event. The level of political imbecility we are witnessing is incommensurable.

Canada, however, is small beer in comparison to the political travesty that is the United States, where nearly half the population relies on food stamps, welfare payments, tax rebates and a blizzard of entitlements, whose foreign policy is a shambles of half-baked and destructive initiatives, which boasts a scandal-ridden and thoroughly inept administration and is mired in a swamp of economic insecurity, which has exponentially expanded a "coercive, intrusive regulatory regime" as well as devastating the healthcare system, and which twice elects a man who would make a Justin Trudeau prime ministry look like a feasible alternative to the electoral mayhem, fiduciary malfeasance and political stagnation that "The One" has inflicted upon his nation.

Only in Canada: Man found with pipe bomb at Edmonton airport allowed to fly

An 18-year-old man who was allowed to get on a flight at Edmonton International Airport in September after he was caught bringing a pipe bomb to security has been sentenced for possession of an explosive device.
Skylar Vincent Murphy was caught with the pipe bomb on Sept. 20. Security took the explosive away, but Murphy was given the go-ahead to continue on his flight. Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) alerted RCMP to the case four days later. Murphy was arrested by Leduc RCMP on Sept. 27.
In an email response to questions from CBC News, CATSA spokesman Mathieu Larocque did not address why Murphy was allowed to get on the plane.
"Screening officers do not have the authority to apprehend or detain passengers," he wrote. "When they see something potentially illegal, the(y) contact the police."
On Dec. 5, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year probation and a $100 fine.
He is also prohibited from possessing explosives, firearms or ammunition for one year, and must also make a $500 donation to the University of Alberta burn unit.

Top Canada court strikes down prostitution restrictions

www.bbc.co.uk
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's Supreme Court struck down major restrictions on prostitution on Friday, including bans on brothels and street solicitation, declaring the laws unconstitutional because they violated prostitutes' safety.

The sweeping 9-0 decision will take effect in one year, inviting Parliament to try to come up with some other way to regulate the sex trade if it chooses to do so.

Prostitution is technically legal in Canada but most related activities have been illegal, including living off the avails of someone else's prostitution. The court found these prohibitions were overly broad or grossly out of proportion to the law's goals.

Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin said a law that banned what she called "safe havens" for prostitutes exposed them to risks from predators. She said many prostitutes had no choice but to work in the sex trade, and the law should not make their work more dangerous.

"The impugned laws deprive people engaged in a risky, but legal, activity of the means to protect themselves against those risks," she wrote. "It makes no difference that the conduct of pimps and johns is the immediate source of the harms suffered by prostitutes."

One current prostitute and two former ones, including a dominatrix, had initiated the challenge to Canada's laws, arguing that sex workers would be safer if they were allowed to screen clients, or so-called johns, and operate in brothels with bodyguards if they chose.

One of the plaintiffs, retired dominatrix Terri Bedford, dressed in black leather, cracked a riding crop with a whoop in front of reporters in the Supreme Court lobby as she declared it was a "great day for Canada, for Canadian women from coast to coast."

Another former prostitute, Valerie Scott said the Supreme Court had for the first time in Canada declared those in the sex trade to be persons.

However, Janine Benedet, who argued before the court for the Women's Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution, said Parliament should make pimping and the buying of sex illegal: "There is no constitutional right to buy a woman for sex."

McLachlin dismissed the federal government's argument that it was prostitution itself, not the laws that govern it, that puts prostitutes at risk.

The safety of prostitutes became a high-profile issue in Canada following the trial and 2007 conviction of serial killer Robert Pickton, who preyed on prostitutes and other women in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside neighborhood.

"A law that prevents street prostitutes from resorting to safe havens...while a suspected serial killer prowls the streets, is a law that has lost sight of its purpose," McLachlin wrote.

Prostitution is legal in much of Europe and Latin America, and brothels are legal in numerous countries including the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. But questions have begun to be raised, partly because of human trafficking. France's lower house of parliament passed a law this month imposing stiff fines on clients.

"How prostitution is regulated is a matter of great public concern, and few countries leave it entirely unregulated," McLachlin wrote in explaining why she suspended the effect of the judgment for a year.

She said her decision "does not mean that Parliament is precluded from imposing limits on where and how prostitution may be conducted," noting that various provisions were intertwined.

"Greater latitude in one measure - for example, permitting prostitutes to obtain the assistance of security personnel - might impact on the constitutionality of another measure - for example, forbidding the nuisances associated with keeping a bawdy house (brothel)."

Federal Justice Minister Peter MacKay expressed concern with the decision and said the government was "exploring all possible options to ensure the criminal law continues to address the significant harms that flow from prostitution to communities, those engaged in prostitution, and vulnerable persons."

The idea of criminalizing the purchase of sex and of pimping follows what has become known as the Swedish model and then more broadly the Nordic model as Norway followed suit.

Evangelical Fellowship of Canada lawyer Don Hutchinson said the evidence was that the decriminalization of prostitution leads to increased rates of human trafficking. He said his organization had last week submitted to Parliament a report urging an adaptation of the Swedish model.

In the mean time, the prostitutes' lawyer, Alan Young, said he expected that for the next year police and prosecutors would likely go easy on enforcing the current laws in light of Friday's decision.

The name of the case is Canada (Attorney General) v. Bedford, 2013 SCC 72.

Canada’s prime minister wants to claim the North Pole

Canada’s prime minister has ordered the inclusion of the North Pole in the country’s Arctic claim after it was excluded from a proposed UN submission, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
Canada will still meet a December 6 deadline for filing an application to the United Nations to extend its northern sea boundary, according to the daily Globe and Mail.
But it now also plans to follow up with a broader claim that includes the geographic North Pole once additional surveying, analysis and paperwork is completed, it said.
The newspaper cited senior government officials as saying Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave the order to bureaucrats after seeing a draft of the UN submission.
Harper’s office declined to comment on the report, telling AFP only that “Canada is in the process of securing its sovereignty over the north.”
Canadian sovereignty over the far north has been a key plank of Harper’s Tories since his government was first elected in 2006.
Every summer in recent years, Harper has traveled to the region to observe Canadian military exercises the harsh environment.
Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the United States claim overlapping parts of the region believed to be rich in hydrocarbons, and have been rushing to gather evidence in support of their respective claims.
Rising temperatures have boosted interest in the polar region, as melting ice opens up shipping routes and makes hitherto inaccessible mineral resources easier to exploit.
According to the US Geological Survey, the Arctic seabed is thought to hold about 90 billion barrels of oil and 30 percent of the world’s undiscovered gas resources.
The North Pole seabed itself is not believed to hold large reserves but has symbolic value for the countries in the region.
Nations bordering the Arctic currently are entitled to a 200 nautical mile economic zone from their coastlines, but claims for extending their territories will be decided under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the

An Ontario woman is about to become one of the richest women in the country, even though she can't find the winning lottery ticket she bought a year ago.

Royal Canadian Mint’s chair allegedly helped a former prime minister’s heirs hide millions of dollars offshore

James Love with Finance Minister Jim Flaherty
James Love, who also advised Finance Minister Jim Flaherty on international taxation, acted on behalf of the family of Arthur Meighen, who served as prime minister of Canada from July 10, 1920 to December 29, 1921.
In a lawsuit, two Meighen granddaughters accused him of breach of trust over the offshore transactions they claimed were unlawful and negligent.
Court documents in the suit filed in 2008 and discreetly settled three years later say Love helped arrange the transfer of more than Can$8 million starting in 1996 to Bermuda, Barbados and Antigua.
Obtained by public broadcaster CBC, the documents show Tara and Alyssa Meighen had concerns about taxes, interest and penalties if the scheme was ever exposed.
The CBC said Love countered in sworn statements that the offshore transfers “resulted in significant savings of Canadian taxes” for Meighen’s heirs, estimated at Can$1 million.
He also denied any breach of trust.
Moving assets to offshore trusts is not inherently illegal, but Canada and other Western nations have moved to tighten the rules to prevent abuses.
Love reportedly acknowledged in an affidavit rules in the Canadian tax code “to prevent transfers of assets from Canada to avoid Canadian taxation.”
But he nevertheless advised trustees of the Meighen family fortune that “it might be possible to structure a transaction that would have the intended results.”
“Such a result might be obtained through a more complex transaction,” he said in the affidavit.
Former prime minister Arthur Meighen's great-granddaugthers Tarah Wright, right, and Alyssa Wright, centre, alleged that lawyer James Love, left, helped their grandfather effectively cut them off from their inheritance, in part using offshore investments. (CP/Farzin Photography/Dalhousie University)
The trustee, Canada Trust, which has since been absorbed by TD Bank, agreed to what it described as a “tax avoidance scheme” in an internal memo filed with the court.
The money was routed through a dozen transfers involving numbered companies and bank accounts in Ontario, New York, Barbados, Bermuda and Antigua, as well as share transfers and loans.
Eventually the funds appeared to end up back in Canada. The Antigua holding companies that absorbed the funds reportedly hired Love’s Toronto-based financial firm, Legacy Private Trust, as an investment manager.
Love was appointed to the board of the Royal Canadian Mint in 2006 and was named chair in 2009.
Love, a close friend of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty who was appointed to the Mint’s board in 2006, was also a trustee for most of the last decade of the Arthur Meighen Trust, an entity set up by the former Conservative PM in 1949 to distribute his wealth to his family. Before taking on that formal role, documents show Love had been an adviser and “close” friend to several Meighen family members.
It was in that advisory role that Love, in the mid-1990s, informed the managers of the Meighen Trust that they could get “Canadian tax relief on the income from about 40 per cent of the [trust] assets” if they moved the money offshore, Meighen’s great-granddaughters say in their statement of claim.
The use of secret accounts in offshore jurisdictions like Switzerland or the Cayman Islands has been thrust into the media limelight in recent years, following a spate of data leaks — including from several Swiss banks — that exposed account-holders’ identities and information.  The most recent large leak was made public in April, when CBC News teamed up with the U.S.-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists to report on secret accounts linked to 130,000 people worldwide.

Only in Canada: Marijuana-smoking Mountie stirs the pot in Canada

www.interaksyon.com
Ottawa (AFP) - A Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer with a medical marijuana prescription for job-related stress provoked a national debate Thursday over whether he should be allowed to smoke in uniform.

Corporal Ronald Francis serves in Canada's New Brunswick province, and reportedly received a prescription for medical-grade marijuana on November 4.
He told Canada's public broadcaster CBC that he should be allowed to smoke joints while in uniform, but received a cool response from his bosses who fear tarnishing the RCMP's image.
Reactions poured in from across Canada both in support and against the corporal's plea, including from Attorney General Peter MacKay who said it would "set a very poor example for Canadians."
Cannabis advocates meanwhile said the case underscores the need for employers to better understand medical marijuana use.
Health Canada established regulations for accessing cannabis for medical purposes in 2001 after the courts struck down a broad prohibition of marijuana.
But it remains controversial.
Francis told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which aired video footage of him smoking a joint in his RCMP red serge, that pot has helped relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress related to 21 years on the job.
His prescription allows for three grams, or up to 15 joints, a day, though he said he does not typically smoke that much.
"I get up in the morning, have my coffee and the marijuana. I go at lunchtime, have a marijuana joint, and then again in the evening. That would be my medical regime. But that may change with my tolerance to THC. It may take two joints in the morning, I don't know," he said.
"I'm still functional," he added. "But your nervous system is relaxed, and that makes a big difference."
"I had to really make a moral decision about it. Because the RCMP and law enforcement, they seem so anti-marijuana, and that's a hard thing to overcome, so I had to make that decision for my own health. It wasn’t based on my career or anything."
RCMP Deputy Commissioner Gilles Moreau meanwhile told the broadcaster that officers with a medical marijuana prescription can take their medication.
But he said they should not do so while in uniform in public.
"Definitely a member that has been prescribed medicinal marijuana should not be in red serge taking his medication," Moreau was quoted as saying.
"It would not be advisable for that member, it would not portray the right message to the general public, it's definitely not something we would support or condone."
The RCMP noted that Francis has been assigned to desk duty and does not carry a gun.

Canada sells historic Macdonald House to Mumbai-based developer

www.ctvnews.ca
OTTAWA -- Canada's top diplomat in the United Kingdom says security concerns were one consideration in the $530-million sale of the historic London mansion that houses part of the Canadian High Commission.
But High Commissioner Gordon Campbell said Canada managed to sell Macdonald House at One Grosvenor Square in London to the highest bidder, an Indian developer.
The Mumbai-based Lodha Group will take over the downtown property in London's posh Mayfair district in December 2014. The deal was announced Thursday after the Harper government declared its intention to sell it earlier this year.
Canada plans to consolidate its diplomatic activity at another historic property, Canada House on Trafalgar Square in the heart of London.
Campbell wouldn't say who else was interested in the Canadian property, but he hinted that the government was sensitive to the good neighbour it was leaving behind on Grosvenor Square -- the U.S. embassy.
London has become a favoured destination of deep-pocketed Russian oligarchs looking for property, which has led some to pejoratively label the city Londongrad. Relations between the U.S. and Russia soured over the last year because of Moscow's decision to grant asylum to Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency leaker that Washington wanted to prosecute.
"We had over 106 tours of the actual property by international investors from all over the world," Campbell told The Canadian Press from London.
"We had a whole matrix of decisions we had to go through, including best value, lowest risk, any security risks certainly were all pursued."
In the end, Campbell said, the property was sold to the highest bidder.
"We had lots of very good bidders and this was the highest evaluated bid that we had, and it's a very good bid for Canada."

Chair of Canadian Mint helped run offshore 'tax-avoidance scheme' for clients

The chair of the Royal Canadian Mint, who also served as an adviser on international taxation to the federal Finance Department, helped engineer the transfer of millions of dollars of a prominent Canadian family through offshore tax havens in what others involved characterized as a "tax avoidance scheme," documents obtained by CBC News show.
Slightly more than $8 million was moved through offshore entities in Bermuda, Barbados and Antigua, later prompting allegations that the arrangement, if exposed, could lead to potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in "taxes, interest and penalties." The documents show there were also concerns about secrecy and instructions to shred files.
The hundreds of records are part of a sprawling lawsuit against James Barton Love, a Toronto tax lawyer who chairs the mint's board of directors, and others by descendants of former prime minister Arthur Meighen. Quietly settled in 2011, the lawsuit saw family members allege that the offshore transactions, which began in 1996, were unlawful and negligent and that Love "breached his fiduciary duties and acted oppressively."
Love countered in sworn statements that the offshore manoeuvres "resulted in significant savings of Canadian tax" for Meighen's heirs — an amount he estimated at $1 million.
He also emphatically denied any breach of trust and said he had "specifically advised" there were risks to the offshore arrangement.
None of the allegations was ever tested in court.

'Complex transaction'

Love, a close friend of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty who was appointed to the Mint's board in 2006, was also a trustee for most of the last decade of the Arthur Meighen Trust, an entity set up by the former Conservative PM in 1949 to distribute his wealth to his family. Before taking on that formal role, documents show Love had been an adviser and "close" friend to several Meighen family members.
If you have more information on this story, or other investigative tips to pass on, please email investigations@cbc.ca.
It was in that advisory role that Love, in the mid-1990s, informed the managers of the Meighen Trust that they could get "Canadian tax relief on the income from about 40 per cent of the [trust] assets" if they moved the money offshore, Meighen's great-granddaughters say in their statement of claim.

Meteorite strike may have caused loud boom in Quebec, Ontario

A meteorite strike may have been seen and heard on Montreal's West Island, the Vaudreuil region and the Ottawa area on Tuesday night, according to multiple reports.
Social media in parts of Quebec and Ontario were buzzing with reports of a loud boom on Tuesday at about 8 p.m. E.T.
Quebec provincial police said they received several calls about the incident, and had no reports of explosions or fires.
Andrew Fazekas, a spokesman for the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, felt the tremor from his home.
He told CBC it possibly could have been a shock wave caused by a meteorite entering the atmosphere. Experts will analyze the data Wednesday, to confirm whether it was a sonic boom.

No reports of damage

Fazekas speculates that a meteor, the size of a sofa to a compact car, may have fragmented with some bits making it to the ground.
He says on his website that scientists will now comb through the reports along with any photo and video evidence in order to triangulate the trajectory of the possible meteorite.
Although the fall of a meteor can often be detected by seismographs, Earthquake Canada says it has not registered any such event.
Fazekas added this appears to be a minor event since there are no reports of damage.

Public Masturbation on the Rise in Vancouver

Known as the Hollywood of the North, Vancouver is one of the few destinations where one can ski and golf on the same day. These are just two of the many wonderful things to know about Vancouver. Here's another one: incidents of public masturbation are on the rise.

Vancouver Police are telling residents to call 911 immediately if they see sexually motivated offences. Since the beginning of October, Police say they have received numerous calls about prowlers and incidents involving men masturbating and exposing themselves in public. Most of the incidents reportedly occur between the hours of 5 p.m and 7 a.m. but police are not hearing about them until later.
Police want residents to report suspicious activity immediately but warn them not to confront any of the offenders.
The Sex Crimes Unit of the VPD is on the case and there is an increased police presence in the areas where this type of activity has been reported.

Why Toronto Can't Fire 'Crack Mayor' Rob Ford

Rob Ford
REUTERS/Mark Blinch
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has made international headlines with his crazy antics this month — he's admitted to smoking crack cocaine in a "drunken stupor," made lewd remarks about oral sex at a press conference, and apologized for going on a bizarre, "extremely inebriated" rant about wanting to murder someone.
It's mind-boggling that he's still in office and refusing to step down or take a leave, but there's really not much the city can do to remove him.
In fact, Toronto has already tried once before to toss Ford from office because of conflict of interest issues, but he won on appeal and was able to keep his job.
Unlike many municipalities in the U.S., Toronto does not have a recall process. Voters don't have the option to gather signatures on a petition and launch a special election to oust officials who have behaved badly.
The Atlantic Wire points out that there are only three circumstances that would make Ford ineligible for office: being convicted of a crime and imprisoned, missing three consecutive months of city council meetings, or violating conflict of interest rules.
Considering that the next election is in 2014, it's unlikely that Ford will be convicted of a crime and jailed before then. And he's still desperately clinging to office despite repeated calls for his resignation.
It seems that the only option left for the city council is to let Ford keep his position but render it completely worthless by taking away his power.
NOW magazine in Toronto has a pretty good breakdown of what that would look like. The council has already begun to slowly strip Ford of his authority. If they continue in this vein, which they plan to, most of Ford's duties could be transferred to the deputy mayor and he could lose his budget.
The province of Ontario could also step in and create a law declaring the mayor's office vacant, but the provincial government is reluctant to interfere in municipal affairs unless specifically asked by the city council. And the council isn't keen on asking a higher government to step in, because that might make it seem like the city can't handle its own affairs.
At this point, the city just has to sit and wait.

Trudeau accused of promoting drug use ‘directly to children’ after Liberal leader discusses pot policy at school

Justice Minister Peter MacKay is accusing Liberal leader Justin Trudeau of promoting recreational drug use “directly to children” after Mr. Trudeau discussed his party’s plans to legalize marijuana while speaking to a Brandon, Man., public school.
“He’s already sending children the message recreational drug use is OK. Now, he’s delivering that message directly to children,” wrote Mr. MacKay in a fundraising letter sent out on Thursday.
“That’s wrong, on so many different levels,” he wrote, adding that Mr. Trudeau’s “allies in the media” are “making excuses for his mistakes.”
The issue also appeared to dominate Mr. MacKay’s appearance at the final press conference of a gathering of provincial justice ministers in Whitehorse, Yukon.
Just as questions wrapped up on Thursday, Mr. MacKay interjected to call Mr. Trudeau’s actions “disgusting,” “appalling” and showing a “profound lack of judgement.”
Mr. Trudeau was in Brandon on Wednesday to offer support to the Liberal candidate running in one of four federal byelections.
According to a series of Tweets, including some from the managing editor of the Brandon Sun, Mr. Trudeau stopped in to a school in Sioux Valley, where he took some by surprise when he explained his stance on pot.
In fairness, James O’Connor, managing editor of the Brandon Sun newspaper wrote in a Twitter message, Mr. Trudeau was asked about it.

Canada: The hidden costs of espionage

(Photo: Stuart Mackenzie/Getty)

In 2008 Brian Shields made a disturbing discovery. The security adviser to Nortel Networks, which would soon file for bankruptcy, had been investigating just how badly the company’s internal systems had been infiltrated by hackers. It couldn’t have been much worse—the hackers had even accessed the files of the company’s CEO, Mike Zafirovski. A group based in China, according to Shields, had been rifling through Nortel’s confidential material for about a decade, making off with proprietary information. His attempts to warn his superiors about the extent of the problem, he’s said, were mostly brushed aside. Shields went public about the extent of hacking at Nortel last year, speaking with the Wall Street Journal and then others, and has since given many talks at security conferences about the ordeal. He’s not shy about blaming the widespread hacking plot for contributing to the company’s demise, pointing out that China’s Huawei Technologies arose as a serious competitor soon afterward. (Huawei has repeatedly rejected any connection as false.)
The hacking at Nortel isn’t unique. In recent years Coca-Cola has been infiltrated by a group of hackers connected to the People’s Liberation Army in China, according to Mandiant, a security firm. The company said more than 100 of its clients had information stolen, and other companies, such as Google, have been vocal about similar problems. With each new revelation, governments must take these long-simmering risks more seriously. Which helps to explain a recent bombshell decision by Industry Minister James Moore: in a brief press release, the government announced that after conducting a national security review, it would not allow the proposed sale of Allstream, a division of Manitoba Telecom Services, to Accelero Capital Holdings. The only explanation for quashing the $520-million deal was a cryptic reference to a fibre-optic network operated by Allstream that services governments. Naguib Sawiris, the man behind Accelero, is based in Egypt and has business interests in North Korea, which may have raised red flags.
The rejection demonstrates just how important national security concerns are becoming in mergers and acquisitions, and how they crash headlong into the federal government’s stated openness to foreign investment. Nowhere is this tension greater than when telecommunications equipment is involved. It provides a gateway to track phone calls, e-mails, documents—essentially all kinds of data that reveal what a government or a company is up to. While 20 years ago protecting sensitive military outposts was necessary to deal with threats from other countries, safeguarding digital information is just as important today. So far, the government’s attempt to juggle security and foreign investment has only resulted in confusion. Sawiris, for one, has had it. “I am finished with Canada,” he told an English-language Egyptian news website recently. “The world is big, and my money can go anywhere.” With BlackBerry now courting bidders, finding a balance has never been more crucial. Erring in either direction could cost the country billions in either lost deals or lost intellectual property. Just a few careful tweaks to current vetting policies could be make-or-break for deals in the future.

World’s first palm scan-activated bitcoin ATM to open in Canada

The world’s first bitcoin ATM will open in Vancouver, Canada, next week – dispensing Canadian dollars in exchange for the anonymous crypto-currency. But only if your palm scan matches the ATM’s records, that is.
The machine will be set up near downtown Vancouver coffee house Waves, is one of five ATMs bought by Canadian firm Bitcoiniacs from Nevada-based producer Robocoin.
The machine will exchange bitcoins for Canadian dollars via Canada’s VirtEx exchange. The transactions themselves will be anonymous, the vendor says, but clients will have to identify themselves via a palm scanner first.
This is done to enforce Canadian anti-money laundering laws, due to which the ATM will only allow transactions of up to 3,000 Canadian dollars (around $2,700) per day per customer.
The four other ATMs will be rolled out in Canadian cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Calgary or Ottawa in December, the company says.
“Basically, it just makes it easier for people to buy and sell bitcoins,” Mitchell Demeter, founder of Bitcoiniacs and co-owner of Robocoin, told CBC.
Bitcoin is an internet-based currency designed to exist without any centralized regulatory authority. New Bitcoins are generated by spending computer processing time to conduct complex calculations, and the process is limited by a maximum of about 21 million bitcoins that can exist.
The currency has long been a fad among online privacy activists, financial futurists and shady dealers, but is so far little known to the general public. It lately hit the headlines after the FBI bust of the Silk Road website that US authorities say facilitated the trade in illegal goods and services, from drugs to assassinations.

(el-alto-sueño);

le pidieron las piernas

duras y nudosas

¿No me envidias?”.
“…Me cuidan, me cuidan un poquito entre todos. No le hacen caso a uno, siempre estoy peleando para que no me manden nada. Cuando cojo el sol por la mañana en shorts y siento el aire de mar, me parece que estoy en una playa… ¡Me van a hacer creer que estoy de vacaciones! ¿Qué diría Carlos Marx de semejantes revolucionarios?”.
