First-ever orbiter photo of Mercury

A NASA spacecraft has captured the first-ever image of Mercury taken from orbit around the planet. MESSENGER, which on March 17 became the first space probe to orbit Mercury, the innermost world of the solar system, snapped its first photo of the diminutive, cratered planet at 5:20 A.M. (Eastern Daylight Time) on March 29. Near the top of the image [at left; click to enlarge] is Debussy Crater, one of the most prominent features on Mercury.

Which near-Earth asteroids are ripe for a visit?
In April 2010, amid mounting criticism that his space plan lacked direction, President Barack Obama gave a speech in Florida to lay out a few ambitious goals he had in mind for NASA. The details of how those targets would be met remain somewhat sketchy even today, but the goals themselves were clear—sometime around 2025, the U.S. would perform an unprecedented feat. "We'll start by sending astronauts to an asteroid for the first time in history," Obama said.Where will the next robotic asteroid mission go, and where will asteroid-bound astronauts first touch down in the decades to come? A group of astronomers working through a census of near-Earth objects has a few suggestions Which near-Earth asteroids are ripe for a visit?

Three Mail Bombs Explode in Europe, Injuring Three
By GAIA PIANIGIANI
ROME — A letter bomb seriously wounded a senior Italian Army official in Livorno on Thursday, the army said in a statement. An Italian anarchist group, the Informal Anarchist Federation, took responsibility for the attack, the army said.
The same group was responsible for sending three letter bombs to embassies in Rome in December that wounded two people seriously.
According to the Italian news media, the episode may also have been linked to two other bombs delivered in Europe on Thursday.

Lord Monbiot: "A Spindly Little Twit"/ #AlexJones
Prominent nuclear and radiation expert Dr. Christopher Busby has slammed British global warming alarmist George Monbiot as being "criminally irresponsible" for writing a series of articles for the Guardian in which Monbiot downplays the threat of radiation from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant in a bid to shore up his claims about man-made climate change being a far deadlier concern.
In the wake of Fukushima, we have seen numerous self-proclaimed environmentalists who are normally so quick to raise the alarm about devastation caused by man-made global warming, actually downplaying the environmental concerns attached to the Fukushima crisis, radiation, and nuclear power in general.
Chief amongst them is prominent British environmentalist George Monbiot, who in an article for the London Guardian last week entitled, Why Fukushima made me stop worrying and love nuclear power, wrote that critics of how Fukushima is being handled had, "wildly exaggerated the dangers of radioactive pollution".
"As a result of the disaster at Fukushima, I am no longer nuclear-neutral. I now support the technology," added Monbiot.
Monbiot's bizarre nuclear "kool-aid" moment was perhaps written in haste at a time when he believed Japanese claims that the crisis was diminishing. But in the past few days, the situation at Fukushima has worsened considerably. Officials hastily retracted numbers yesterday which suggested that radiation levels in the containment building of reactor number 2 were an astounding 10 million times above normal. In addition, water purifications plants across Japan have been told to stop taking in rainwater as radiation levels in the atmosphere continue to rise.
Monbiot's rhetoric is a stark reminder that many leading environmentalists don't give a damn about real threats to the environment, preferring instead to spend all their time obsessing about carbon dioxide emissions and thinking up new ways to exploit global warming fearmongering as a means of controlling every aspect of our lives.
While weaving terrorizing scenarios about man-made climate change making whole areas of the planet uninhabitable, most notably the island of Tuvulu, which global warming alarmists already claim has been abandoned due to rising sea levels when in fact its population has doubled in the past three decades, alarmists like Monbiot don't seem to be too fussed when real environmental catastrophes like Chernobyl really do make entire regions uninhabitable.
Indeed, others have gone even further. Columnist Ann Coulter appeared on Fox News to ludicrously proclaim that exposure to radiation was "good for you". Given that she's so enamored with the apparent health benefits of radioactive fallout, which new studies blame for nearly a million cancer deaths in the 25 years since Chernobyl, we offered to send Coulter on an all-expenses paid holiday to Fukushima. We've not heard back from her.

#Obama Speech Analysis: A Weird Journey Through the Mind of a Narcissist
...The President's address was an exercise in psychodrama, a weird journey through the mind of a narcissist who can't believe all the nasty things people are saying about him.
Obama's id is wrestling with the comparisons between his Libyan intervention and George Bush's action in Iraq. He made a point of criticizing Iraq, which had a vastly larger international coalition behind it than Obama does now, united in the struggle to depose an even more gruesome and sadistic monster than Qaddafi. He warned us that we might be stuck in post-Qaddafi Libya for a while because "40 years of terror left Libya fractured." The left never cut Bush any slack for trying to rebuild a country traumatized by decades of terror from Saddam Hussein.

Why we live in dangerous places?
Natural disasters always seem to strike in the worst places. The Sendai earthquake has caused over 8,000 deaths, destroyed 450,000 people’s homes, crippled four nuclear reactors and wreaked over $300 billion in damage. And it’s only the latest disaster. Haiti will need decades to rebuild after its earthquake. New Orleans still hasn’t repopulated following Hurricane Katrina. Indonesia still feels the effect of the 2004 tsunami. The list could go on and on. The unfortunate lesson is that we live in dangerous places.
We have built civilization’s cornerstones on amorphous, impermanent stuff. Coasts, rivers, deltas and earthquake zones are places of dramatic upheaval. Shorelines are constantly being rewritten. Rivers fussily overtop their banks and reroute themselves. With one hand, earthquakes open the earth, and with the other they send it coursing down hillsides. We settled those places for good reason. What makes them attractive is the same thing that makes them dangerous. Periodic disruption and change is the progenitor of diversity, stability and abundance. Where there is disaster, there is also opportunity. Ecologists call it the “intermediate disturbance hypothesis.”

Death Penalty in 2010
Executing countries are leaving themselves isolated after decades of progress - http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/report/death-penalty-2010-executing-countries-left-isolated-after-decade-progress.
Countries which continue to use the death penalty are being left increasingly isolated following a decade of progress towards abolition, Amnesty International has said today in its new report Death Sentences and Executions in 2010.
A total of 31 countries abolished the death penalty in law or in practice during the last 10 years but China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the USA and Yemen remain amongst the most frequent executioners, some in direct contradiction of international human rights law.
The total number of executions officially recorded by Amnesty International in 2010 went down from at least 714 people in 2009 to at least 527 in 2010, excluding China.

The idea sounds stupid, but her presentation is refreshingly authentic. Staying true to her hippy self, Sequoia's presentation consists of scribbles on notebook paper, she's covered in piercings, and she went up there with bare feet.

R2PAQ (‘Responsibility to Protect Al-Qaeda’)
It was undoubtedly in recognition of his role in promoting “humanitarian intervention” – or “l’ingérence humanitaire” in the French original — that the “French doctor” Bernard Kouchner would be named the first head of the UN protectorate in Kosovo, following the conclusion of the 78-day NATO bombing campaign that drove Yugoslav forces from the then province. The point of the “right of humanitarian intervention” was to qualify several fundamental guarantees and prohibitions enshrined in the UN Charter: namely, the respect of state sovereignty and territorial integrity and the fundamental prohibition on the use of force in international relations.

Why Not Syria and Iran? Hell, Why Not North Korea?
The problem with Obama’s Libyan thing is twofold:
First, if it’s right to intervene to save Libyan lives, then why isn’t it right to save Iranian, Syrian, Congolese, Sudanese, North Korean and Chinese lives, as well as millions of others?
Remember, I was the first kid on the block to call for bombing the Libyan air force, several weeks before the Valkyries decided that it was urgent to do something, and convinced a clearly reluctant president to do the Libyan thing. And I have said that getting rid of Qadaffi is a worthy mission, but not a crucial one. Which brings us to the second part of the problem.

U.S. may arm Gaddafi rebels

Libyan rebels
The U.S. administration has not ruled out providing military support and arms supplies to Libyan rebels, Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said on Tuesday.
The U.S. goal is "squeezing Gaddafi's resources and cutting off his money, his mercenaries, his arms, providing assistance to the rebels and the opposition," she said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" show.
Asked whether that could include some military support, Rice said: "We have not made that decision, but we've not certainly ruled that out."
According to some media reports, the U.S. has been looking for a legal framework to allow limited supplies of arms to the rebels if they can prove they need them to defend themselves from attack.

Prosecution Wants Increased Sentence for Khmer Rouge War Criminal

March 29 marked day two of the scheduled three-day appeal court hearing for Comrade Duch, the Khmer Rouge’s former chief jailer, who has asked to be acquitted and released.
Last year, the United Nations-backed tribunal sentenced Duch to 35 years in prison but reduced the term to 19 years because of time served and other factors.
The lower court had found Duch responsible for the deaths of more than 12,000 detainees at S-21 prison, which he headed between 1976 and 1979.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Tuesday also warned that the situation remains "unpredictable" at the earthquake-damaged plant. He said his government is giving its complete attention to halting the radiation leaks.
Officials announced earlier that dangerous plutonium has been detected in the soil in five locations around the plant, more than two weeks after a massive earthquake and tsunami crippled the plant's cooling systems.

(el-alto-sueño);
le pidieron las piernas
duras y nudosas
